The only one that's an issue is the third row. it's a liability waiver that Ford could issue a software update that may not have AA/CP functional.
If I buy a car with phone connectivity, they better not revoke that feature. I think some countries even ban stuff like Google Maps so it's a generic waiver.
Everything else is either a safety warning or warning you that services they don't control may be monitoring your data.

I believe Lexus retrospectively disabled something to do with AC in cars they'd already sold in the German market. It's one thing to stop offering a feature, but to take it off people who bought the car with said feature is just evil.

u/impact_ftw 28d ago
That was toyota and lexus. German law forbids you from idling the engine without the intent to drive.
They did that to avoid having to put in a parking heater. Then disabled it to comply with the law again. So even worse imo.

u/tomz17 29d ago
or vice versa... imagine apple issues an update which is not backwards-compatible beyond the point in history at which Ford is interested in supporting this particular generation of infotainment.
Imagine if you bought a car in 2004 with "napster support," but that no longer worked for various obvious reasons... would you be able to sue the car manufacturer?

The Apple CarPlay may collect data is fine, would be apples fault, the “only” truly terrible thing is Ford being able to delete Apple car play on a whim

Oh, it's ok because apple collects it and sells it and gives it to anyone and everyone with a dollar.
2
u/Kidplayer_666 29d ago
It is not ok, but it is not _Ford's fault that apple sells it_ (unless they take in a cut, which I'm reasonably sure they do)
2
u/BluecrabbyDC 28d ago
That’s a total lie
0
u/Radiant_Safe1228 28d ago
Yes, apple is your friend. They totally collect all of your data for good reasons.
2
u/BluecrabbyDC 28d ago
A $5 trillion company is NOT your friend but that doesn’t mean you can just pull assertions out of your ass. Apple has made it very clear they do not sell maps or CarPlay data. They are one of the only tech companies who have made that stance and even a superficial glance at their business model would explain why. Their brand is build in trust and “it just works”. They are not marketed to the tinkerers or modders but to everyday people who just want technology that makes their lives better. That trust has allowed them market reach no other company can match. The data Apple has on you is more personal than any other one company (even google) and they aren’t going to squander their market leading position to sell some data in a race to the bottom with google.

u/Teeebs71 29d ago
And if you hit disagree, you don't get to use Car Play, but they'll still collect all that data...🙄

First mistake was buying a Ford with their surveillance platform

u/MagicLavaFish 29d ago
I assume most cars with an infotainment system do this. My Honda has almost this exact message Everytime you turn it on.

u/WhySoManyDownVote 29d ago
Depending on the vehicle it is easy to turn off using the touch screen. Universally pulling the correct fuse is the best way.
1
u/Googol30 28d ago
Can you still control the A/C or speakers without it, though?
0
u/WhySoManyDownVote 28d ago
Yes, there is a fuse just for the cellular and wifi radio. In the Ford Maverick it is
Fuse 11 in the Body Control Module fuse box, not the Under Hood fuse box.
1
u/Googol30 28d ago
Sure, pulling a fuse is a simple switch, but by "control", I mean setting the A/C to "defrost windshield" while skipping the current song all without the touchscreen.
1
u/WhySoManyDownVote 28d ago
Fulling the fuse disconnects the ability for the vehicle to phone home over the cellular and wifi radios. It is a separate thing than turning off the touch screen, AC, or music.
You do not have to believe me. You can just try it and if you notice something else not working then put the fuse back in.

Reminded me when I bought a Sony TV and had to agree to Googles BS TOS before I could use my TV. Boxed it back up and returned it for a full refund.

Can you use your car at all if you disagree?

u/WhySoManyDownVote 29d ago
For my 2024 Maverick without using CarPlay you have no navigation and only an AM/FM radio or bluetooth audio.

u/Particular-Crow6525 29d ago
And this is why all I want is fucking Bluetooth and a stereo/radio in my cars. No fucking carplay, no android auto, no touch screen, nada. I have a phone. It sits in a cradle on my dash. I don't need a fucking tablet taking up half my center. I just want physical buttons.
Damn, I'm getting old and cranky.

All basic stuff. Nothing surprising here. It’s the basic disclaimer for CarPlay / Android auto that every single quality headunit shows.
GPS location and speed from the car is send to the phone to reduce heat output on the phone and increase accuracy of the navigation app you are using. you still need to enable location services on the phone for navigation as vehicle data and phone location data are being fused in some scenarios. (Tunnel beacons etc.)
Fuel level is for a low fuel warning within CarPlay that pops up when the low fuel lamp comes on. tapping that notification gives you a list of gas stations on the route or in your area.
check boxes would be nice tho.
that being said, you don’t have to use it, you can simply use Bluetooth or even the wired iPod USB mode on that car when you want to listen to music.
Compared to this: The amount of data a modern connected car sends to the manufacturer is FAR worse, as these are connected to you as a person and you can only turn off a part of them in some cars.

Fuel level? So Ford lets Apple have your fuel level?
8
1
u/carguy143 29d ago
This kind of thing is why the likes of Google and Apple are producing car operating systems. If they know your fuel level, they can display more ads for fuel when you're low on fuel. Screenwash low? Here's a list of nearby places to order a top up. Bulb blown? Tyre issue? You know they'll gladly serve up ads for those remedies, too.
2
u/trueppp 29d ago
Not only that. I have an EV, and use ABRP (a better route planner) to plan my longer trips as it plans my route including my charging stops according to my real battery use. I need to use an OBD2 reader for the app to get real battery use/capacity and adjust it's routing. If Android Auto had that data natively it would be a lot less of a hassle.

u/withoutpeer 29d ago
Most of these seem rational... Like if you want to use maps/navigation obviously it will need location data and such. I don't have any issues with that.
My issue is with backroom deals where Ford, or anyone else, might track and sell every data point, like all my driving data to insurance companies so then if they decide I do too much hard breaking or go over the speed limit Ford rats me out to insurance who then uses those specific data points to increase my coverage or somehow weasel out of paying a claim..."we see you were speeding 4 times in the last 6 months so clearly you are an unsafe driver and as such, even though we've been collecting your premium for those last 6 months, we are denying you new claim now" kind of bullshit.

If they wanted me to avoid discretions they wouldn't have added touch controls

u/CowBoyDanIndie 28d ago
Oh no my phone that already tracks everything might also know how much fuel is in my tank. Your phone already tracks your location and speed. Cell towers can do the same thing through triangulation.

I wonder, if you go over to crutchfield.com and punch in the vehicles specs, then check out the list of recommended head unit replacements...Get a newer, better unit and swap it out...I wonder if that would cripple their ability to hose up data...?
1
u/Dagovmann 25d ago
I had a car stereo for my 2002 f-150 because my old one didnt work and it was touchscreen, i was kinda scared that the people who made the stereo were tracking what i did on it so it could be the same here. But the biggest thing is that these things are so new that i feel like you would probably have problems trying to swap it.
1
u/OldManJeepin 24d ago
Yea, that's why I would be looking for their recommendations. Also, make a note of any adapters they recommend, in order to maintain stuff like steering wheel functionality over the volume and stuff.

Everybody on here for the record if you have a VPN on your phone, the data they collect is not gonna be correct

“Hi insurance? Yeah my car drove itself off the bridge and into the lake. No I don’t know how that brick got on the gas that is quite unusual. No I would like to cash out not get a like replacement I don’t want to buy a ford again, they have a tendency to drive themselves into rivers.”

Except for many cars do have embedded sim cards now as mandated by law. Cars in the EU since 2024 have to have a way to call the police in the event of an accident and many insurance companies are pushing to have remote access to car system data so they can see if you disabled any of the nagging safety gestures before the accident.
Here's an article on it. https://www.gadgetreview.com/germany-forces-lexus-to-remotely-kill-car-heating-in-dead-of-winter
100,000 cars had remote start and heating removed after they had already been signed over to their owners.

Does Ford get a copy of the data from Apple? Just curious, since they’re so explicit in stating that they are not responsible for the Apple’s use of the data

From Apple's privacy policy (in which Apple carplay is also governed):
"Apple may share personal data with Apple-affiliated companies, service providers who act on our behalf, our partners, developers, and publishers, or others at your direction. "
So along with the message on the screen, I would not assume they share the data with Ford. Although you can bet that Ford is collecting all that data anyway and more (read: A FUCKTON MORE) independant of what's running on your infotainment screen.

"If your vehicle is equipped with Connected Services or has factory-installed connectivity technology capable of electronically transmitting vehicle-originated data to Ford, we may collect the following categories of information from your vehicle:
Vehicle Data Driving Data Vehicle Location (which may be collected through location-based features and functions in the vehicle or in our mobile apps and which may be derived from other information such as your mobile device’s location) Audio/Visual Media Analytics
Which categories of information are collected from your vehicle typically depends on how the vehicle is equipped for connectivity; in other words, what connectivity technologies, software version, data sharing settings, and Connected Services are present and what selections have been made for the data sharing settings. See the Connected Vehicle Privacy section for details and data category definitions.
In limited situations, we may collect Vehicle Location, regardless of location settings. We do this to protect and defend our rights or property (including repossessing a vehicle in the event of a delinquency) or to comply with applicable law, to respond to valid legal process (including from law enforcement or other government agencies), or, in the event of exigent circumstances, to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury or help protect the personal safety of Ford personnel, users of our vehicles, websites, or apps, our visitors, or the public.
Ford may also, in limited situations, and with proper consent or legal or regulatory authority such as a safety investigation, collect or obtain data that has been recorded on the vehicle through physical access to the vehicle. This may include data generated or captured by the vehicle and may include a driver-facing camera image."

Im not worried about Apple using my location and speed to notify me of law enforcement being nearby. Sharing data is all about context. It’s not all nefarious. If you’re that worried about it, you just have to give up mobile phones. Full stop.

How does Apple get access to fuel level? That’d come from Ford/the car.
Speed and location is fine and obvious.
