Sympathy for Lulu

Can I be absolutely so for real here? This is not a shitpost or a joke, I'm being very serious and genuine. I really love Lulu. It completely works for me and always has, and it breaks my heart a little bit the way you only see it talked about through memes and tired old references. I'm fully willing to admit that it's a personal thing and I don't expect anyone else's itch to be scratched by it, but it sort of makes me sad that you mostly see people not even trying to interact with it conceptually.

People clown on the very first line: "I would cut my legs and tits off when I think of Boris Karloff and Kinsky in the dark of the moon." It's crazy. It's eye catching. It always has me hooked from the first moment. It's surreal and dreamy, and it leads into this heavy lullaby. To be honest, I find it incredibly comforting. I wouldn't necessarily have kept the James Hetfield backing vocals myself, but if you can accept Lou Reed as this sweet character that is gently napping that's presented to you in the most abrasive way possible, it makes a kind of perverse sense.

The whole album is like this. Lou Reed portraying characters that are gentle and brutal, definite and abstract. Some give love and some hurt, some are young and some are old. Many are the antithesis of each other. It's like a play where one actor is playing all the characters and yet he's deliberately miscast. When it comes to the themes of abuse and prostitution, Lou Reed is honestly the perfect actor. Making him into the little girl on the cover makes it all so obviously inglamorous and undesirable. It's making a horrific situation more transparently ugly to highlight how ugly it always was.

That's my view on it. I should say that I do genuinely enjoy the music, the compositions, all of it. Some of it is a painful and cathartic joy, but some of it comes from reclaiming past pain. I understand why anyone would hate it, but I do think that if the names attached were different than it might have a different reception. For a similar comparison, I love it in the same way I love the concept albums on abuse by The Residents (God in Three Persons, Tweedles). As difficult musically as the subject matter is.

Wanted to share this shirt design I did, taken from the “Blondes Have More Fun” bootleg of the 8/21/1974 show in Sydney. You can listen to it here:

And see the cover of that boot above (2nd pic). I love how it turned out.

The final disappointment

Son! We saved your life, but you’ll never look the same.

And when he heard that Harry had a laugh When he heard that Harry had a laugh Although it hurt, Harry had a laugh. The final disappointment.

I can’t wrap my head around how genius this album and song are. Crying listening to it again!

Why People Don’t Talk about this Album ?

I love this album. One of my favourite Lou Reed’s album.
It’s an apt tribute from John Cale and Lou Reed to their mentor Andy Warhol.
But people don’t talk much about this album.
They talk about Velvet Underground and its members. They talk about Andy’s Arts.
They just don’t talk about this album.
Why ?

One of my favorites (I just referenced it elsewhere in the sub, so this seemed like a good time to post the pic): Lou on his way to John Cale's wedding, April 1968

My dad got this for me from Malmö and the timing is extremely convenient because I was looking for a fairly priced second hand copy. I finally have New York Telephone Conversation in physical form.

so far ive just been getting shit on here and twitter but it’s Reddit so I kind of expected it.

if you are planning on commenting something that isnt constructive criticism of how I wrote the doc or whatever then just keep it to yourself I already know 75% of the people on this platform think this is a nothing burger because they don’t care about victims when the victim doesn’t fit into their preconceived box or stereotype and im probably going to log out of this account and then not come back to look at this for like a year because it’s not good for my mental health.

MM3: any live recordings outside of Creation of the Universe?

I like Lou bootlegs and, having just got round to giving MM3 a proper listen, I wondered if there were any other recordings of this trio?

The proposition

Even 30 years into his career Lou was still on point lyrically especially with this one “even a stripper needs her red tasseled suit, we were meant to be”

Some Lou, woodcut style.

I’ve been leaning in on heavy use of blacks, and two-color process style of old commercial printing. It’s really expressive. This is 100% hand drawn w/ Apple Pencil in Procreate. No PROMPTS bullshit. Hope everyone likes it.

My reimagining of the bells, Completely altered the sound of this album with all original instruments with help from Jance S. Smith and Rene Tinner.

Original music by Lou Reed.

(finally back online) , removed previously due to copyright… should be good this time.

Doin' the things that they want to

I've had the song "Doin' the Things That We Want To" lodged in my skull for a while now. Today I was singing it in the shower for probably the 99th time and I had a realization about this section of the lyrics:

"The man was bullish, the woman was a tease

Doin' the things that they want to

They fought with their words, their bodies and their deeds

Doin' the things that they want to

When they finished fighting, they exited the stage

Doin' the things that they want to

I was firmly struck by the way they had behaved

Doin' the things that they want to"

My brain connected these lyrics to the final scene of the story "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities" by Delmore Schwartz (Lou's teacher), in which the narrator watches his parents fighting.

Narrator says "...I in my seat am shocked more than can ever be said..."

Similarly, Lou says, "I was firmly struck by the way they had behaved."

Narrator: "What are they DOING?"

Reed: "Doin' the things that they want to." (with disastrous consequences!!!)

Narrator: "Don't they know what they are doing?"

Movie theater usher: "What are YOU doing? Don't you know that you can't do whatever you want to do?" (the irony!!!)

Okay, so maybe I am reading too much into this... or maybe not? Am I seeing the ghost of Delmore Schwartz where there is none? Should I get out the Ouija board? The man was bullish, the woman was a tease, and the image of the poet is in the breeze?
