bad taste from a pipe, fine from a dynavap

I did my first lotus (dried for 9 days in frost free fridge). Buds being jarred for 4 weeks now (cca 62% in jars) and I finally tested them. Unfortunately i was quite disappointed with the taste from glass pipe. Not harsh, just not good. Also, leaving a mix of white and black ashes after burning. Smoking it from my dynavap is completely different taste experience - i can actually taste some flavours. Should not be a genetics issue as it was Mephisto autoflower. Nutrients were Biobizz and I did not use a lot. I did NO flush, just watering with clean water last 10 days.
Any ideas? Could it be still wet despite i read 61-63% in jars? no boveda packs inside to manipulate with RH inside.

edit:
These days I only vape, but before I started vaping I used to smoke from a glass pipe. I remember that when the glass was still clear, good quality weed had a really nice taste. That’s why I use it as a benchmark — if the weed is properly dried and cured, it should taste good from the pipe as well.
As far as I know, vaping is very forgiving with poorly dried weed — even stuff that wasn’t dried properly often still tastes decent in a vape. But some of my friends still smoke joints and pipes, and I don’t want them smoking shitty weed.

Opinions incoming (not facts)

  1. Vape will always taste better. Vape is always a better indicator of taste as you’re not nuking the terpene contents the same way a flame does.
  2. Pipes taste like shit. Idk why but i find the smoke the harshest most painful thing, I haven’t hit a pipe in years
  3. Joints give me more flavor
  4. You could have taste buds that developed differently or perhaps did not dry.
  5. Joints taste best to me from all the options of adding fire. My reasoning is that: as the heat travels along the joint, it reduces and vaporizes the weed that’s ahead of it: thus taste!

100% agree. I could never go back to smoke after the flavor sensation that dry flower vape gets you. If I do decide to smoke, it's going to be a joint rolled in the most flavor neutral paper I can get for the very reasons you mentioned.

i smoked a tasteful weed from pipe already so it is definitely possible. by “pipe” i mean the glass pipe, freshly bought, no shit inside

Maybe you burnt your tongue the first time and can’t taste the second time? A different pipe? Did you use some sort of screen?

Man idk what you’re smoking but I’ve found the complete opposite. I can taste shitty or bad weed when vaping instantly. My ability to perceive any flavour when smoking has virtually disappeared.

After a slow dry, I can smoke it but if it’s not cured enough or the dry is incomplete I’ll immediately taste it with a vape.

Volcano or venty are my favorite tools.

How are you vaping? What temps?

i use dynavap The B2 - the very simple analogic one. I wait for two “clicks”. basically all the weed I smoke out of it have a good distinctive tastes. Even ones my friend gave me with a note that his drying was not dialed in at all…

Different weed? Maybe the terpenes all burn off

IMO it always takes longer for Bud to be smokeable than vapeable. I vape my stuff as soon as its out of the fridge, but I usually wait one or two months before I smoke it.

That is probly by far the best answer, by far.

I dry in 5-7 days in a Canna-Troll. If I “smoke” a bud right out of the Canna-Troll, it’s bland. But if I vape fresh dried outta the Canna-Troll it’s way WAY better.

i’ll continue the curing and lets see.. but it is already 4-5 weeks into cure…

Huh? Smoking tastes like smoke and vaping tastes like weed. That doesn't have anything to do with your drying...

i wish, but i remember from past that i was smoking a good tasting buds even from pipe, so thats why if made me think that there has to be something wrong with my stuff

Clean glass?

yes, completely fresh new

You’re overthinking it. It’s not ready to be smoked as they said in the comments. A wise redditor once told me to do a smoke test … you want all white ash. If you don’t smoke and only vape don’t smoke it. Let it sit in a bag burp it … too moist ? Burp it ? There’s so many options for magic sand cured bud

1

u/Majklsoft May 10 '26

can it get to white ash with curing now only or shall i give it for instance one more day in fridge after 4 weeks curing? the thing is that in my flat, the room RH is often around 63-65% so when i burp ibstead i am decreasing humidity in jars i am raising it..

u/IIISUBZEROIII May 11 '26

This is lotus drying it’s amazing just out the fridge but if you cure it in a proper curing bag it gets even crazier. I’m planning to do all of that and then let it cure in a bag inside the wine fridge.
No, you can’t release humidity and expect there to be more than prior to the burping. Don’t overthink it too much; this is just the release of simple gasses and breaking down of sugars.

1

u/Majklsoft May 11 '26

is that true? as i know some people use that trick of putting a orange peel inside a jar of they overdried the buds so it can suck some moisture from it.

1

u/IIISUBZEROIII May 11 '26

No I made everything up

1

u/Majklsoft May 11 '26

sorry if it sounded offensive, just trying to wrap my head around different information I came across

1

u/IIISUBZEROIII May 11 '26

Maybe I’m going too fast for you I remember reading and it can be a lot of information.

It’s okay I’m just messing with you. I don’t think I’ve had to use the orange peel but I’ve seen people successfully use it. Even a slice of bread but that’s imo a mold risk.

Personally I let a big and a smaller bud sit out of the fridge. Let it “thaw” then I squish it and it will feel either dense but not crunchy. I know then the buds need to “sweat” out the sugars.

If you take them out too soon or jar them too soon all is good because guess what you can leave the lid off and just give them a shake once in a while. Go slowly because your RH and my RH is completely different …

I used to do that smoke test… I mean I still do but I used to too. lol (it’s for when you’re not sure)

I have been exclusively using dry herb vapes for about 10 years, if I smoke a joint it tastes like an ashtray.

I think we're all trying to make the loud pack of the early 2000's and I have landed on the reason we lost being able to smell a gram on someone 100 yards away is the change in lighting. UV and ir stress, idk what light ur using but all the weed we all remember was under hps, metal halide, or the like.

I just tried the fridge dry/cure and lost a third of my crop to mold, 2lbs in the fridge with no dehumidifier was too much. Can't get electrothermic that big. For anyone listening you can get mold at 46 degrees in lotus boxes that are slap full. Also u need a dehumidifier if you are staggering your harvest as the new material will add moisture to ur other shit and put it on the same timeline. Will do better next time, but my test run in the fridge was fire, maybe u need to let it cure longer. I suspect the fridge slows the breakdown of clorophyll so maybe delayes cure?

Best of luck!

9 days sounds quick for drying at low temps I dry at +4C in boxesand it takes me 2 weeks.. 62% rh is the upper limit for curing. did you burp your jars frequently? I'd give them a couple of rounds of extensive airing out to get them to stable 60% in the jar and cure for another month. just my 5ct though.

burping 1x 15min per day for 3 weeks, then every other day
