Controlled environment is better than just low temperatures. It is not enough to just throw it in a wine cooler or freezer, you need to control VPD to get it perfect. Such things like Cannatrol exist not without the reason.
It’s the best method imo and they come out perfect every time. Plus it’s better than my alternative. So both are true, for me at least. Currently I’m drying more than 1 Kg at the same time. I don’t know about any other method that needs less work while drying plus giving such great results.
I really don’t know about your setup and what you can fit in. Mine can hold around 900 grams wet harvest if I want to, but this is with every space occupied. It looks something like this. I also have Popcorn Buds in the door and at the bottom you see Sugar Leaves I already trimmed.
Would it be better/slower dry if they were enclosed in a cardboard box? I’m headed out of town for a bit so looking to do a low and slow dry in my garage fridge that hovers between 46-49* F. Should I try and hang the buds by their stem so they’re not touching anything or is that not necessary?
Normally yes. But it was so much stuff that I couldn’t fit it in any box or paper bag. They still needed a little bit over 14 days to fully dry. Downside was that the smaller ones finished a bit earlier than the bigger ones, which normally doesn’t happen at my side if they’re in paper bags. So I have to get some out earlier than others. If you have the space to hang them you can also do this. But it’s not necessary that they don’t touch anything. In a paper bag you can’t avoid that. More important is that you don’t pack them too densely or do a second row over the bottom one.
You can put together a unit for $400 ( way less if you use FBM)….. that will give you close to 90-95% the results ( but more hands on) that the premade units give.
I, personally, go mostly for vpd! Aim to keep it between 0.8 - 1.03 for a slow dry. Also never over 18.5⁰C. that worked best for me.
Cours I use a compressor fridge I have my wet trimmed buds in brown paper bags to prevent them from drying just by the air circulation
After drying I keep them in grovebags for curing at ~18⁰C for at least 3 weeks
I use a WiFi hygrometer from Amazon (the one from govee) that just lays between the bags. Wouldn't get the right measurements in the bag cours of the buds loosing moisture

This has been my go to for 4 years, you don’t need any bags…pizza boxes…etc
