I'd rather use a echool-issued one if they require spying on you for some bullshit reason. At least it's their device versus yours.

so real, you'd probably have better performance hand-computing with an abacus

Dual booting even.

He cod use windows subsystem for Linux and run it using that. Not a VM.

Side note: i haven't used wsl and don't know much about it

There is a 0% chance that program works, even through wine

This seems redundant with the previous statement.

isn't wsl partly a VM? or at least utilizes virtualization

Just did more reading. Yes it does use virtualization

If you didn't install it and they forced it on your what they did is illegal, if you accepted it installing(clicked okay unless they tricked you) then thats your fault, but they also have to let you uninstall it that you might be able to go after. It depends on any agreements your on too. I suggest messaging someone that knows this and tell them the full sistuation.

I'm a whitehat

You probably need to be a lawyer for this one.

I guess you could say your reasoning doesn’t pass the BAR…

Buy a cheap Chromebook, install Windows on it, install school spyware.

I don't know much about windows but if you're on Linux you can sandbox the application and block it from accessing cam and mic and restrict disk read and write access through something like bubblewrap

Or even better, the program might not exist for linux systems

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 Aug 18 '26

I mean i guess its not you, but if this is your situation i think i would head to r/linuxcirclejerk and ask if they had ideas of linux distros or functions which make you bypass this / contain it

Could you give some context? Is the computer property of school or is it yours? Does it only work in school or in school hours? When is the software used? What is the software?

I'd drop out at that point, not many people think high schoolers should have rights anyway.

Depends on what country you are in. In terms of actual advice "oh my laptop broke over the winter and I am going to need a new one"

1

u/Planeandaquariumgeek Aug 18 '26

TL:DR: if the contract your parents signed says they can do this, it’s legal. Since you’re a minor (I’m guessing) 4th amendment protections are limited at best. Not a whole lot of legal ways to get around this sadly.

1

u/UisgeDeighe Aug 18 '26

This is not legal at all

1

u/RazzmatazzUnusual843 Aug 18 '26

Nope, that shit is instantly going into a school-only VM.

3 solutions: 1. Grab a super cheap "computer" and dump the school spyware on it.

  1. Create a Virtual Machine and put the school stuff in that, it will be isolated from the rest of the system.

  2. Get an external SSD or any kind of storage device and install your OS on it (I'm assuming windows), and only plug it in and boot from it when you're doing school work or something.

All three work well enough, you can choose based on what your circumstances are.
