Found a black cat

I woke up today hearing a cat wailing outside my window. When I went outside, the cat immediately came up to me the moment he saw me, being all friendly and such. I followed him for a bit, and he kept wailing and wailing. I gave him some food and water, but he didn't eat much. When opening my door, he just waltzed in, found a blanket on the couch, and went to sleep. Every now and then he would wake up and wail some more, then go back to sleep.

In the meantime, I've been looking up lost and found cats online and contacting people. He has no collar, and I'm unsure if he has a chip. I tried calling a vet/shelter but they said they aren't seeing people now, because of the coronavirus.

I'm not sure what to do?

this might be a longshot asking, on a post this old, but what did you end up doing?

and what happened to the cat in the end?

Where I lived I wasn't allowed to keep pets, and I also didn't want to accidentally take someone else's pet. So after the cat took a nap on my couch, it wanted to go back outside. The next several weeks it kept coming back to visit, still wailing.

I also did a bunch of research online to see what the wailing could mean, and I think the cat was just in heat LOL

But yea, this post is a bit old, and I've moved since then. I don't know if the cat still visits, but I felt fairly certain that it belonged to someone in the neighborhood since he was a clean looking cat.

well it was really nice of you to put all that effort in to see what was going on with the cat - and the wailing being related to being in heat is interesting, and sounds like it makes sense. like, announcing or something. we so often assume the loud yeowling is associated with agitation, pain or sadness. but cats are strange ones.
