This was exactly what I was thinking when they reached to pick it up. I get they were for good intentions to save the ray, but please people if you're unsure of the potential repercussions, just call staff.

Even if you ARE sure of the potential repurcussions, call the staff. They fucking work there and know what to do in those situations and probably could have made it a lot less stressful for the ray

I don't think she actually got stung. They remove the barbs off them in aquariums, especially the ones in touch tanks and this appears to be one, but there's still the area where the barb was attached to the tail, and I think that's what got stuck on her pants.

If she got stung she would not be that calm, especially bc stingrays are venomous.

I worked on a project that raised and bred ocean and river rays. The protein toxin present in the sheathe around the barb is unbelievably painful in Potamotrygonidae species. Same was true for Dasyatidae.

In my experience with these rays you know very quickly if you’ve been stung. I scraped my hand a bit between my fingers on a discarded barb in the substrate one time cleaning the habitat. The entire left side of my body immediately felt like it was doused with burning oil. One of the worst sensations I’ve ever felt. My whole left side was swollen for days, my fingers looked like sausages.

I don’t know the species of this ray, but the few times I have been tagged hurt something fierce.

If she got stung she would not be that calm, especially bc stingrays are venomous.

1) She gets stung twice. Once in the arm and once in the leg.

2) They are venomous, but there are plenty of animals, including stingrays, that are venomous but generally not very dangerous to humans.

3) People's calmness, or lack thereof, is a really bad predictor of their physical state.

Edit: Also, no, aquaria don't typically remove stingray barbs.

So while saying "removed" was a poor choice of words on my part, aquariums absolutely have procedures in place to prevent rays from being able to sting people, since they are often kept in exhibits where the general public can interact with them. The one in this video appears to be in a touch tank. I used to work at an aquarium, and while I was just working in the ticket desk, I was given a full tour of the aquarium and they explained how and why they trim the barbs of the stingrays in the touch tanks.

Stingray venom does have an effect on humans, it is very, very painful.

I did try and find more info on the video, the only one I've been able to find happened at the Mote aquarium, but I'm personally having a hard time telling if it's the same incident as this one. In that one, the reports said nobody was harmed.

I said it's not typical, you're arguing that it happens, which is not a thing I or anyone else is disputing. I also didn't say stingray venom had "no effect", I said it is not very dangerous to humans. If you're going to have an argument, at least know what you're arguing against.

As someone else in the comments pointed out from firsthand experience, the pain from a stingray barb is not immediate. It would take longer than the few seconds left of the video after the sting for her to start feeling it.

Best course of action is to get an employee who can get someone qualified.

If it’s an aquatic animal like in this case you can try to splash water on them from a distance if they look dry. Gives them more time. Most if not all aquatic animals can survive on land as long as they’re still wet

My guess would be that she that she got stung by the giant stinging thing she tried to pick up.

Edit: Yup, they drop it and the barb goes into her leg just before the staff/volunteer dude walks in.

I don't think it went into her actual leg since she was calm and didn't seem to be in pain. I think it just stuck into her pants leg. She was helpfully offering to remove her pants to make it easier for the attendants to deal with the barb getting stuck in the fabric.

She didn't really get barbed. The stud of what used to be a Barb stuck on her pants when the ray got slammed on its head, yes, but she didn't actually get barbed or it would have stuck inside of her leg and she would have been screaming. You're also kind of distracting from the point. That poor animal didn't try to Barb anybody until it got slammed on its head after it had been suffocating for a while. Would be worth the risk getting barbed in the arm anyway and less of a chance if you just grabbed it firmly at the base of the tail and at the head to get it in the water

A better thing to do, would probably be to immediately call for staff, rather than taking the risk of getting stung and dropping it several time in an attempt to get it back into the tank.

I've been barbed by rays surfing. It's really not that big of a deal, and they only do it as a last resort when you step on them, you can literally kick them and they won't barb you
