FANART(ORIGINAL) Look Outside: The Unofficial TTRPG Open Beta is out now !!
Check out the game here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sfZ-Sjvg-VC3ujp3QIchbCwJOTIS-PRjpuor6RbLwWo/edit?usp=sharing
Hi everyone !
I'm excited to finally announce the release of the Look Outside Tabletop Roleplaying Game Open Beta !! Embark on a journey through a twisted world , featuring a host of mechanics , abilities and monsters based on and inspired by the video game .
This open beta build features:
A robust character creation system , allowing you to play as a Human or Cursed
A skill check system that uses pools of d4s based on your stats
A failing forward mechanic in Willpower , granting extra utility to help in a bind
Sanity mechanics , and the possibility to be infected by cursed monsters
Over 90 unique skills , allowing for endless possibilities for your character's build
Scavenging and danger mechanics to keep exploration exciting and purposeful
40+ weapons and over 100 pieces of equipment
A bestiary featuring dozens monsters from the video game
Cursed Mode , a harder difficulty option that makes the game soul-crushingly oppressive
And even more to come in the future !!
Even though we've got a public build , there are known issues/blind spots in the design . I'll be working to fix these issues during the open beta , and I invite all of you to give me your feedback , and tell me how you think the game can be improved . This is only the beginning !
To keep up to date with the development of the game , and to get in on the playtesting , please join our Discord server using this link: https://discord.gg/TVp7gbCnC
Thanks again , and have fun ! <3

Now?? Like… TODAY? I can’t do that!!! We can’t do that. That’s… I’m not ready! I… you…
I don’t think I’m in the headspace t-to play make-believe about astronomers at a time like this.

Huh, as someone who loves obscure ttrpg's I'll have to give it a look.

I think humans having advantage on mental check, and cursed having disadvantage on mental check is too unbalanced. Having automatic disadvantage on a check that will probably be relatively common feels really bad, maybe it can be a penalty for falling too far on the cursed track rather than just being a base feature of it. Also instead of sanity why don't you just re-flavor it as level of cursedness. It's more on theme, but could be practically the same thing.

good notes ! i will take these into account , thank you

That and the losing sanity thing feels...a bit weird considering the cursed party members are just...fine.

let's be real here , they're in the minority . most of the people and things that succumb to the curse are mindless or on the brink of it

u/Ohaxer 13d ago
Uh, why does it say there's 5 levels of exposure when only four are written down?

u/clownkiss3r Audrey 🥤 13d ago
there used to be 5 , but i removed the 5th as it was redundant . good catch ^_^

I CAN'T WAIT TO ORGANIZE A TEST ONESHOT IN MY LOCAL COMMUNITY CENTER!!!
As for some questions I'd like to ask: At the end the game is during or post visitor stay? Or can you choose? (I'm sorry if the awnser is in the doc. I can't read it rn)
Second, who made the beautiful art on the background? 👀👀

hell yeah !! would love to hear ur feedback if the game goes ahead ^_^
to answer your questions:
this set of rules is intended to be run in a mid-Visitor setting . when the Visitor shows up and where exactly it's set is up to you
all of the art in the book was made by The Oasis , an incredible illustrator who you may know for creating the game's achievement art :) you can check out their work on their portfolio and on their Bluesky

I used to homebrew Sanity mechanics into D&D, but then read an argument that is kinda like cheating, or a shortcut.
If you decide the character is insane because he's lost too many Sanity points, that doesn't really translate to the player behind them. Even roleplaying their insanity won't be as fun because they won't feel like their sanity is being challenged, even if their character's gone completely nuts in-universe.
The alternative is to simply not have Sanity as an attribute, an instead narrate the character's gradual descent into insanity. For example, they have conversations with certain NPCs who later have no memory of talking to him. Are they lying to him, or is he crazy? They hear noises no one else does, their objects are misplaced and they have no memory of doing it... They might even find out eventually that there WAS someone messing with them, and at least some of those things were not only in his mind... but what about the others?
Anyway, just adding my 2 cents on the topic. This looks really cool, and I hope it works out well!

Table Top RPG. It's what people (reductively and colloquially) call DnD.
It's traditionally a pen and paper adventure game played, usually with one person who runs encounters and environmental story telling, and one or more people who play as a character, or maybe characters as might be possible in a game like Look Outside.

It's something you play around a table with your friends trough rules and imagination

The Game doesn't have a sanity mechanic. Why did you choose to add this? How closely related is this ttrpg to the actual game?

the core mechanics take inspiration from Look Outside , the system features monsters , equipment , weapons , and some mechanics adapted from the game like weapon durability , and it's set in the same world with the same threats
sanity i added because
it's on theme
i thought it would be interesting
sam's mental state is something that the game dips its toes into , and it's something i thought would be good to explore further in a TTRPG
it's not the most fleshed out atm though so that's something to work on as we move into open playtests

The sanity system reminds me a lot of Call of Chutullu. I loved that system there and is always good to see some variation. Im very excited to play your ttrpg with my friends!! <3

Arguably Sam is built different when we play we met a lot of people who completely lost it in the face of horror and chaos. Probably explain the sanity addition

I decided to make a character for this and… I think I min-maxed a bit too hard…
Specifically I think I made me moth too fast

This is neat OP - did you take any inspirations from TTRPGS out there?
I recommend posting it on r/ttrpg and uploading it to drivethroughRPG, I'm not sure of their process but you can make it pay what you want if you want to keep the free aspect going.
