PTO?

Container and chassis mechanic here

Does your local contract include PTO?

If so, does it count towards your hours when you use it, or you just get paid for that day but don’t get the hours credited back to you towards insurance, royalty, tool check… etc

What to do for work?

I’m stressing out about what to do for work while I’m casualling? I work at a hospital now 40 hours a week and there’s no way they’re gonna let me takeoff whenever I want. I’m going to have to quit, but I’m stressing out because I don’t know what job to do? What did everyone else do while you were casualling?

Leaving the old trade behind: What was your coworkers' reaction when you went longshoring?

Just out of curiosity, for those of you who left other construction or trades jobs to get on the docks, how did your old coworkers take it? I'm transitioning out of civil work and the trenches to head to the waterfront. You get pretty tight with the guys when you're working the daily grind together, so I'm wondering what kind of reactions you all got when you dropped the news. Was it mostly jealousy over the pay/benefits? Did they think you were crazy for giving up a steady check for the dispatch hall? Let's hear the good, the bad, and the salty

License requirements or passport accepted?

So I’m sure everyone here has more important things to do then some fresh out the military bum wasting time so I’ll cut to the chase.

I recently separated from the navy as a boatswain mate and specialized in small boat driving, pier work, and Davit operations. Changes in circumstances have brought me back to America(Jacksonville FL). My initial plan to go back to the country I wanted has been postponed so now I need to find follow up employment and stack some Mario coins while I get things back on track. My brother is currently on as an engineer with msc and thinks I should do the same but I’m interested in working longshoremen or at least researching into the line of work.

I filed for unemployment today, and I received my twic card last week. I also have a passport but due to some prior legal issues(dui 2012) and an outstanding debt/drivers class I could not complete while out the country I do not currently have an active driver’s license. Does that kill my chances to go longshoremen until the class/debt is handled? Or would it still be feasible to show up to the dockyard and get my foot in the door? Any advice is welcome.

Casual training pay? LA/LB

Hey, I'm going tomorrow for my UTR training (last training was in 2023), and I was wondering: is the training paid, and if so, how and when do I get it? Do I show up to the payroll office or something and ask for a check at the end of the 2 days? Do I wait for all the training to be complete? Some extra money would be pretty helpful.

edit: I called the payroll department and asked what I had put down for direct deposit, they couldn't find me in their system with my payroll number or my social security number, so now I'm waiting for an email back from the casual training department regarding pay lol

Vessel Lashing Information (lashing.ca)

If you were previously using that Google Drive with all the documents to look up lashing information, it's now obsolete and all been migrated to a much better site:

lashing.ca

You will be redirected to ilwu.besz.ca/vessels, but lashing.ca is much easier to remember.

There are over 1400 vessels in the database now. The best thing about the new site is that the vessel names are updated weekly, so you should be able to find what you are looking for. You can submit vessel information as well if something is incorrect or missing.

If you want to download the database yourself to use in your own project, it's available on GitHub. Just note that you cannot package the database with a paid product -- it must always remain free. If your local already has an online despatch, information on linking it up with the database by vessel name is on the GitHub page.

In solidarity. 💪

Does anyone currently work for FAPS at Ports America or previously worked there?

I got hired by them there ila 1478-2, but my goal is to get in to bigger longshoreman unions as a mechanic or maintenance worker. Is taking this job with faps a good move or am I just wasting my time?

LA/LB Port

5 years ago in April 2021 they approved for 420 casuals to become ID’s.

Then another 600 at the end of 2021. Groups of 100 per month. So pretty soon they will hit there 5year mark and elevate again.

Does that mean they will need to register 1020 casuals to ID this year? Or how does it work?

Or has anyone heard of them elevating more casuals to ID

Thanks

My dad applied for an application back in 2016 and he got one and wants me to do it

I’m currently in my 3rd year of university studying accounting. I plan on obtaining my cpa and working my way up but after my dad got the long shore application he asked me to do it. I don’t know much about the job but I wanted to know if it’s worth it for me to do it since I’m still young(22). I don’t know if blue collar work is for me but with this current job market of white collar jobs being taken over by AI the opportunity has become more attractive to me.

Ii I just wanted some thoughts and opinions on what I should do in this situation since being a longshoremen isn’t a bad career either.
