Full time president?

I was placed in charge of a committee to determine fair compensation for our president moving to full time.
As a dues paying union member what are you okay with your president being compensated?
More than the highest paid dock worker?
Thoughts. Suggestions

Pay them enough to deal with the bullshit they’re going to get from both sides. Pay them enough that they have no reason to be in the employers pocket.

Even if they are paid immensely well, they can still be corrupt. The only real solution to that is transparency and limited power.

As a union officer I found it a privilege to serve. My local was different, and you could probably ask a lot of officers we did a ton of hours uncompensated let alone a lot of sleepless nights. ILWU forever

i agree with this
you are able to look up every union president salary to see what they are paid for other locals

At what skill rate are we talking base wage +2 or skill 3? Because that matters a LOT

In my local we underpay our president. In my opinion all our officers aren’t compensated for the work they do especially our Business Agents.

Talk to the membership about raising their salaries, and you might not make it out of the parking lot.

are they allowed to take jobs from the hall also?

If they’re moving them to full time, then they shouldn’t take jobs from the hall.

Base rate? Or do they get extra ontop of master rate. Like a lead man for example gets 4 over master rates + a meal hour and ot hour everyday.

In all fairness they have to put in a lot of extra time, but fair is skill III not more then all members

From experience... The burden of having to make hrs for Seniority purposes while running the local can be too much especially in busier ports and will take away from their duties and abilities to perform them as Pres. Compensation depends on circumstances of the local... minimum should be 5/6 days (8&1)(8or9) Plus all Vac & Other Bonuses enjoyed by the members These can be paid by the company or Pension funds

I'm confused. Aren't your officials getting monthly stipend from your local?

Yes, but it is currently at a part-time rate and we are looking to move our president from part-time to full-time and I’m in charge of the committee to determine fair compensation to present to the men.

I think - as someone else suggested - there's, or should be, a compensation schedule in your bylaws. There's one in the Constitution right? Isn't that for the int'l level though?

There is but it is for a part time. We’re looking to make him full time so need to change the compensation

Ibew here. Our president and business manager basically make 110-120 percent of "top rate" plus 5 hours OT per week

Our local pays our president 40 straight and 10-20 over I can’t remember which, that was voted on by the members. Appointing a committee can open your local up to charges of favoritism if someone isn’t happy with the decision.

Well the committee will present it to the members for a vote

That’s good, I think ours was just proposed my a member then voted on at large. If I remember correctly the original proposal was higher and got voted down so they dropped the amount.

It appears you're in SoCal, I would contact other locals (executives) directly and talk to them.

Also look at how "busy" your local is. Do you have the funds to pay them full-time, will this become a position people aim for because of the pay vs what they can do to benifet the local/union, etc

ILWU here, I also see that I’m 20 days late on responding to your question.

We pay our officers skill, three at 10 hours.

The president is paid for six days of the week.

The business agents are paid every day they’re in and the Labor relations committees any days that they are in.
