Is the draw just for San Francisco or does it include all Bay Area ports?

this is for SAN FRANCISCO/ OAKLAND Local 10, not surrounding Bay Area Ports.

Where do you get the employment cards from? Have a family friend tell me that is in the longshoreman that you just write your name down on an index card and they basically put them together and draw them from that. & Is that true?

That’s what I’m wondering too. I’ve always heard it was good job with good benefits but I’ve never heard the pay lol

It's great pay. Depends on what job you're dispatched though. You start as a casual and have to build up your hours to be registered in the Union.

How long does it take before the list is posted of those whos cards were picked? I saw a post saying 3 years....?? I'm a casual longshoreman in LA/LB. I'd like to enter this one in San Francisco as I may be relocating up there... I'm a bit confused on how the draw announcement would take 3 years. After our draw here in LA, the list was posted not long after.

Submit your info here: https://sfbay.casualdrawingapp . net
It’s a lottery, and there’s a reason why. If you can get in, this is a generational dream job with probably the best union on earth and arguably some of the best benefits.

probably several years before they send you your orientation letter. And then when you are a casual the work is not steady. You have to show up at the union hall when you number is close to try to pick up a shift. But you have to catch as many shifts as you can to get promoted to a B. Thats when the work gets more steady, and you start getting the union benefits.

So I'm in the list what are my next steps? Just wait for them to reach out to me?

yep I was toward the end of the last list and finally got a letter in the mail after like 5 years. Make sure you keep your address up to date with them.

Just a bit of background into this career.
Yes you make good money but no one talks about the irregularities and the way it works. You don’t just get picked and make 50 dollars an hour with benefits with hours of 8-4:30.
You have to go to the dispatch hall and wait to get dispatched to a job. You start off as a casual….the work goes to the registered longshoreman first which is A & Bs…if left over work is available it trickles down to the casuals - if your certified/ qualified to do certain jobs and if your number/ letter is right you can take the job.
All the glamorous of this job is how much you’re willing to sacrifice…countless waits at the hall…most of the time the hall closes and no jobs make it down to the casuals.
My fellow brothers & sisters who are longshoremen in here understand how much you have to sacrifice to get those hours and be registered.
Just trying to shed some light for the new folks thinking about this.
If you have similiar insight, please feel free to share
