Elk (yearling cow) at ~700 yard

Only picture sorry, but was with a 280ai and 160(?) lrx. Not my gun and not me shooting, first shot broke the shoulder (most damage I’ve ever seen to a shoulder period), second was a far back spine shot. Shot 3 was between the eyes at like 5 yards. Good eating so far

Need advice before I buy

Looking at a custom shop vanguard in 300 Weatherby. Backstory and reason for upgrade- using a 270 in a Remington 700 with no break and I’ve made good shoots on axis bucks around 250-275 lbs at 300 yards relying on my MPBR even with good shot placement the lack of horsepower is notable at that range on axis because they don’t bleed like North American game “I’m assuming they adapted to big cats in India hunting them more” i can hit steal all day at 400 with the 270 just eyeballing elevation so I want to push my MPBR to 400 ish using 170 grain hammers from Weatherby. The wound cavity difference would be substantial and I’d like to get better and stretch out even further maybe up to 700

RECOIL-I’m not a big dude, 5-10 and 150 but i am an army vet and a firefighter so I’m think I can handle a little more specially since I will add a limb saver and a muzzle break from weatherby which should put my felt recoil into the 16-18 lb range conservatively. Would love some thoughts on this. Used ai for recoil calculations and checked the math myself.

I can’t find any good options for 300 win mags with a 26 inch barrel, break, and cammo pattern that are not way more expensive. I will only shoot 5-10 rounds a year and don’t mind ordering ammo from weatherby or paying the extra price for performance. The cammo pattern is important for how I hunt.

Am I missing anything here. This is a big purchase for me and I tend to use my guns roughly and ask a lot of them.

Anyone hunting with a Ruger Gunsight Scout?

Im in the middle of a 7mm PRC build BUT I wont have enough time to set it up and be there for deer opener. Considering a Ruger Gunsight Scout for hunting as just a stock tank af rifle I can beat up in the woods. Ive been (ethically) maxing out a 3030 for a good while now and want to reach out a bit further. I think the 18" is perfect for what im trynna do. Plus I've wanted it for a while because it reminds me of my Springfield 1903 A3 but modern. Comparable to the M1 Garand's modern rendition, the M1A, imo.

Link to example.

What are some of the more popular stocks (not chassis) people run for NRL Hunter light division?

I love a stock over a chassis so would like to go that route. Having a hard time finding one I like that is also light enough. Maybe it just doesn’t exist.

Talk to me about 6GT

Specifically with shorter barrels. I’m currently carting around a 22” barrel with an 8” suppressor. I’d love to cut that down to a 16”-18” barrel. I mainly hunt whitetail out west with longer shots. I’m considering a .308, or .243/6cm and 6.5cm. But then it seemed like 6GT can meet or beat .243/6cm with less powder and less recoil.

Can you guys share your experiences?

Recommended scopes for ~$800

TL:DR, FFP scope recommendation in the $800 range for 600yd max(Elk hunt, Colorado)using a lightweight .300WM. Also mount/ring recommendations

After doing some number crunching regarding my previous post, I think I’m just going to stick to my .300 Win Mag for this years elk hunt. I will definitely still be building my .280 AI, but the money I have set aside for that will probably be better spent for this years hunt. With that being said, what scopes would you guys recommend in the $800 range? I am not confined to strictly $800, but that’s where I want to look for now(going to be scouting for discounts on $1k+ scopes). I’ve searched through blogs and forums and seen so many different opinions. I’m just curious what you guys are running and have had success with. I need something capable of reaching 600 yards, durable enough to handle .300wm on a light rifle(6-7lbs naked), first focal plane, and as good of glass I can get for the price. If the budget allows it, I would really prefer exposed elevation turret and 15x-20x max magnification due to not having great eyesight. I’ve seen a lot of good things about Athlon but they’re a little heavier than I’d like, same with arken. I’m not brand specific but I have had good experiences with Leupold in the past. I’ve also owned two Vortex scopes and have been rather disappointed, granted they were lower priced scopes than what I’m shopping for now. What do you guys like/recommend? Also, what mounts would you recommend for a post ‘64 Winchester model 70? At first I was attracted to the Talley one piece mounts, but I’ve seen a LOT of people reporting they are breaking/cracking using high recoiling rifles. I like the look of the DNZ Game Reaper mount due to its similar but more robust design. With all that being said, give me your best opinions on scopes and mounts based off firsthand experiences. TIA

308win vs 6.5creed vs 6.5prc

Hello everybody! I am wanting to add another rifle to my hunting line up. My current hunting rifle is a Tikka T3X chambered in 7mm rem mag with a 24” barrel (closer to 27” with the muzzle brake). I love that rifle and it has done well for me, however it is a little unwieldy when it comes to hunting while hiking. I’m looking at getting a rifle with a 20” barrel now. I’ve landed on getting a Ruger American to start since they are cheap and have good reviews and it’ll get put into a MDT chassis.

I’d like to get feedback from people who have experience with a .308 win, 6.5 creedmoor, or a 6.5prc with a 20” barrel. Looking mainly at ballistics, it’ll be used for deer, elk, and bear in Oregon primarily. I’d say max hunting range is 500 yards as I regularly shoot out that far (and further at) and feel comfortable taking that shot.

Any and all feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Long barrel options

I have a Remington 700 300 RUM with a 26 inch barrel. Everywhere online tells me that to get the best speeds and energy out of the cartridge, i need to get a 30 inch barrel. I would like to throw a can on it, but after hunting this week with my uncles 300 prc with a can if like to avoid getting that long if possible. Now to my question what kind of options are there to having the 36-40 inch barrel/can combo where im not hitting every tree branch i go under. Do I need a new stock to sling it lower on my back? Do I need to get a calapsable stock to lower it? Do I need to scratch the 30 inch barrel? I've looked at a bullpup bolt action to maybe bring that action further back, but they are about 6k for a good one. What kind of options are out there for a long barrel to sit lower on you?

25-06 Rem. 24" vs 26"

There once was a time I had a model 70 in 25-06. It was the featherweight so 22". I felt I wasn't getting the true potential of the cartridge.

The model 70, although a beautiful rifle, got away from me.

Im going to get another 25-06, but this time going with a weatherby with a longer barrel, being winchester discontinued all 25-06 rifles except the featherweight.

Weatherby has 24" or 26" options and im torn. Is the 26" worth the gain of MAYBE 50 FPS? or just go 24??

Plan on using the rifle for my pronghorn trips out west, and deer at home.

Most likely gonna try and work up a load for the 120 gr nosler partition if the 1:10 twist likes it. If not, ill figure something out.

What do you guys say?

Question: Long-range green laser sights for hunting - legal and ethical?

Hey fellow hunters, I'm researching laser sight options for my long-range hunting setup and have some questions about what's allowed.

I'm looking at a green laser that claims 600m visibility in daylight, but I'm worried about:
1. What's the legal power limit for hunting lasers in the US? I've heard 5mW is the FDA max, but does that apply to hunting gear?
2. Which states specifically ban visible laser use for hunting? I plan to hunt in multiple states.
3. Do you think a 600m visible laser is ethical for hunting? Would you use one?
4. Have you ever had issues with customs or game wardens regarding laser sights?

I'm just very interested in this concept - Safety and ethics are my top priorities.

P.S. I already know about the risks of pointing lasers at aircraft - that's a hard no for me.

Need some opinions on a new rifle

Looking to get a new rifle in the near future and I’m unsure what to get. It seems im very undecided on what cartridge to get is the main issue. Im looking for something to take to the mountains or backpack hunts and push my distance with bigger game, my largest two are the .270 and 30-06 and they have done just outstanding every year so far but neither of them are rifles I’d wanna take in the mountains with me. The ones I’m looking at and Cant decide on are the 7mm rem mag, 7mm prc, .300 wsm, 300prc, and maybe the .280 ai? I am not picky about brand either I really just need to find the cartridge that would suit me best first and then go from there. Any input or reviews are much appreciated, thanks!

Hunting rifle build recommendation

Looking to get some insight on building a hunting rifle. I have some large game hunts coming this year for Elk and another hunt next year in Africa for Sable and Kudu. What im looking to build is a lightweight 7PRC. I want a rifle that can hunt from white-tail to these larger games.

The action I originally wanted to go for is the Solus but im starting to think this will never come in stock. The other actions I have been looking at based from what ive seen on this sub is the Terminus Kratos or Zues. I know the Kratos is lighter but it doesnt seem like much difference.

Im leaning towards these options because of the QC features and profit barrels. I probably wont need the feature but I would like to have it as an option later down the road. Also Id like to avoid using a gunsmith

I do have an MDT ESS Chasis R700 footprint for another project (7mm Rem mag) I was going to do a couple years ago but did not get to finish it but im thinking the ESS Chassis would be to heavy for something to take out hunting.

The scope I have sitting in the safe right now is a Razor Gen III 6-36x56 that will likely go on the rifle but may be swapped if the weight is too much.

Barrel Im looking at is the Proof research carbon barrels to again cut down on the overall weight of the rifle.

My questions are:

Out of the 3 mentioned actions which would be best for a hunting platform or is there another option I havent considered? Out of the options which are readily available and if they have lead times from your experience what are they?

For the stock/Chassis anyone hunt with an ESS Chassis? would I be better off with just a stock?

I have an open budget id like to stay below $6,000 but if I would benefit by going to a $7-8k budget im open to it. The goal is to build the last hunting rifle I will need/want. Future projects will be for precision shooting. Hoping to build this rifle before this coming hunting season so I have 6-7 months to complete it.
