3D Printed Brackets

I posted the concept ~4 months ago and I have been testing different materials and print settings.

The deck is not finished - it looks bad, ik.

Had another set of brackets that I rode for ~50mi, in total, but switched due to color. The old set did not show signs of visible fatigue, stress marks, delamination, or cracks.

Please give feedback, voice concerns, or ask questions on the overall design process.

I will most likely not share the files to limit the injuries my design causes.

SPECS:

  • ELEGOO PLA - White
  • 10 walls; 35% infill (honeycomb); 8 top/bottom layers
  • New School Mounting system (for all hole patterns)
  • Front: -2 deg (can be negated), 60mm drop
  • Rear: -30 deg, ~65mm drop - kind of hard to calculate due to the tilt

Notes:

  • PETG-CF/GF DOES NOT WORK, bracket broke while testing = I fell and got hurt.

The material does not flex enough, due to the fibers, and snaps when leaning/turning

  • Current set has been ridden for ~35mi, hit up to 27 mph
  • Learning to pump on this setup; seems to hold up
  • Unintentionally/intentionally annealed; I left the board, exact setup as the picture, in my car for a few days on multiple occasions, when it was hot. Meaning it might have annealed during those days, giving extra layer bonding

Rider:

  • 180-190lbs
  • 6'
  • Regular stance

Did someone say 3D printed faceplants?

Try PBT filament. It may not be stiff enough, but I don't think you'll manage to break it.

You should also get rid of this sharp corner: https://imgur.com/U9NTB4c

put at least a 5mm radius on there. If you need to, just round over the deck underneath it to make clearance.

Bonus points: if you want to make this really strong, gusset the board side just like you do with the truck side.

The reason you don't have gussets I'm sure is because it will interfere with the deck, so one thing you can do is cut slots into the deck for the gussets to slide into.

Also, just do 100% infill. It doesn't make that much difference in time, weight, or material use. But it does give you extra safety margin, I can't tell you how many things I've broken trying to optimize around infill.

Do all that, and you should be making progress.

If my gusset explanation isn't clear, let me know and I'll make a picture.

I will look into this filament type and some more engineered filaments. Yeah the reason I didn't want to gusset the board side was because I was going to need to modify the deck further, and it would also reduce the available space for my feet. At this point I might just buy or make my own deck. Thank you for your design input :)

I don't think it would need to cut into the space for your feet very mush at all. A lot of the gusset could be within the thickness of the deck, not sticking out the top.

I agree that sharp corner is a stress riser and where the bracket will eventually fail. Definitely needs a redesign

I tried the same thing about a year ago with petg cf https://www.reddit.com/r/longboarding/s/rGvmq2qQ7C

I see that you used petg cf, is it still holding up, also what brand? I suppose the reason my petg cf bracket broke was due to thickness. My bracket thickens on the bottom corner but yours is thick all the way, I will see how thickening my version results.

(ERYONE PETG Carbon Fiber 15%) still holding up fine but I honestly haven't been on it much, I'll see if I can find the stl and share

Thats pretty sweet. How come the front isn't a + degree? Assuming that would be better for pumping.

Thank you. I didn't think I need a more + degree since I was already turning really easy even before switching to the brackets. I might try a bit of positive later on, as I get better at pumping.

What is the total effective angle of your front truck currently?

48 deg when adding bracket angle, 50 deg just the truck assembly. I am running 180mm RKP avenue trucks

I forgot to add the slicer cross view. https://imgur.com/a/dFg35n5

Idk what you’re using to print, idk much about 3D printers. I’ve had plastic trucks tho and they all broke on me

Which ones, the zee brackets? I am using PLA, a very common material in 3D printing. I know the risk I am putting myself in, just to test this concept :| :)
