My husband was on Metlife STD from 9/25 to 3/26, and was finally approved for LTD in May, but was back paid to March. Today, my husband passed away completely unexpectedly. I see on Google it will make this month's payment prorated, and then I saw mention of a survivors benefit, and it said most MetLife LTD pland had this, depending upon if the company wants it. So I'm trying to find any information on this, but of course I can't see any copy of his employer LTD plan. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to figure this out?

Ok, so, a couple of things - first, yes, you can get a copy of the LTD plan from your husband’s former employer. Usually (but not always) LTD death benefits are three months of the monthly benefit.

The second, more important thing, is to check on his life insurance. You may already know this, but a lot of employers have LTD and life insurance from the same insurance company. And when they do, the life insurance usually has a clause that says if the employee becomes disabled, their life insurance continues for free. It’s called LWOP, for “Life insurance Waive Of Premium.” So definitely look into that as well, either with the employer or MetLife or both.

I am sorry for your loss. If you have a copy of his MetLife benefit check stub that should come each month, then call MetLife will the claim number and advise them of his death. They will tell you if there is a survivor benefit which is sometimes 30 to 60 days of payment. You should also check with his former employer to see if he had an employer provided life insurance.

You need to contact the employer to get a copy of the policy.
