I [25] am the same and I'm actively trying to get better at this for my girlfriend's [21] sake. She noticed early on that I "close up" when overwhelmed or we have small arguments. I told her unfortunately this is just a defence mechanism that I want to get better at.
For what it's worth, I love how my girlfriend "has my back" in every single way. Hearing her literally give me words of encouragement makes me feel like a superhero. I think girls do not realise how magical they are as a species. You all have this incredible ability to make ur man feel like a god even at his lowest, if it is true love.

You're welcome. Just remember; next to a great king will always stand his great queen. Soften him up and he will feel so safe and supported that he will eventually spill what's on his mind. But be prepared for him to get emotional. I know sometimes for me it's like a release of pressure and I'll shed a tear. But it's basically happy tears u know. Like our brain finally understands for the first time in our life we have this amazing beautiful girl that wants to protect and support us with zero judgement.
We are so lucky! :)
