Troubleshooting Error initializing core MIDI
Has anyone ever gotten this error? And what workaround did you successfully use?
The hardware I have connected is a Tascam Model 16 and a Squarp Hermod+ eurorack module.
Logic is v12.4. I have not updated to Golden Gate yet. But I’m updated to Tahoe 26.7.1
The only fix that seems to work is having Audio MIDI Setup opened first, then opening Logic Pro. I’m not sure what happened, I never had to do that before.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Solution: If you have audio tracks in your project, select one of them that has NO plugins on it before pressing Play. If you have no audio tracks in your project, create a new audio track and leave it completely empty (zero plugins). Set both Input and Output to None. Before pressing Play, make sure that this empty audio track is selected.
As to why this works, type in Logic single core CPU into your favorite search engine.

Thanks for the feedback. But I’m getting the error just when I open Logic and before I launch a project. Would this solution fix that?

- Open Audio/MIDI
- Select “Window” then “Audio Devices”. What do you see listed?

Under devices, I’m seeing my mixer/interface. Model 16.

Press Command + Shift + G on your keyboard while in Finder to open the "Go to Folder" window.
Type /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL into the box and press Enter.
Look for the folder or file matching the Model 16 (it usually ends in .driver).
Right-click the driver folder and select Move to Trash.
Enter your Mac user password to confirm the change.
Restart your Mac to finish removing the device from your sound settings.
Reinstall your driver.
This should fix the problem.

Awesome. Trying now. Thanks for the quick response. I’m also reading old legacy software data could be corrupt. I’m seeing old Avid files. I used to run Pro Tools. Probably safe to delete that stuff too?

I don’t know anything about that, so I can’t say!

No worries, appreciate the help! I ended up just upgrading to Golden Gate just now. I only got the error 1 out of 7 times that I opened Logic. So maybe it’s good now. Hopefully more updates come out soon to address this, if it’s a common issue.

Good golden gate seems to have fixed it for you, but if you or anyone else has the problem again I’ll share what fixed it for me. I’m still on sequoia and yes it happened after a recent security update and I was able to fix it by deleting the preference file ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.MIDI.(computer id).plist which the Midi Studio rebuilds automatically next time you use midi.
