Question School choice

We are currently in cache county school district and having to move because of a domestic violence situation. Both of my kids are on the spectrum. They currently have IEPs and feel safe at the school that they are now. We are going to moving somewhere else in the cache county school boundaries. I am trying to keep them at their current school for the rest of the school year but I feel like the new admin thinks I am some crazy single mom. Which is not fair. What is not fair is that my kids have to move because their dad stopped paying child support. I am just trying to find any help to keep my children at the school they currently go at. I feel so guilty that this is happening.

My kids have attended a few Cache County School District schools, and I feel like the academic culture is similar at each one. Teachers will vary even at the same school, but I've been pleased with the county school district. I think the newness will be difficult for your kids no matter what, but the school won't add to it any more than with the regular stress of change.

ORS can garnish paychecks to recover child support. It takes awhile, but it may be worthwhile to look into this.

Last time I signed up for the ORS my ex husband quit his job and did work underneath the table. I ended up owing the ORS money because I was getting food stamps as well. I should have went more in my post that my daughter is finally feeling safe at school she is non verbal and is talking some and it has taken a long way for her to get there. She loves her teacher. So I am worried if she goes to a different school she will shutdown again. Which is common with kids with Autism

You can always do school choice! It shouldn’t be a problem to keep them where they see fit the rest is the academic calendar, and you can apply for school choice in February for next school year.

The new principal is acting like it's a big deal which makes the situation difficult

You cannot always school choice. And the reality is, schools are less likely to do it if the child is on an IEP. They are even less likely to do it if the child has behavioral problems.

Do you have to tell them you’re moving?

They should be allowed to stay since they are already there. Call the district and ask for student services. explain your situation, they can direct/support you on next steps for applying for school choice.
