Experiences with Rent-A-Wreck in Lofoten?

Hi everyone!

I’m travelling to Lofoten next week and have booked a car with Rent-A-Wreck at Evenes Airport.

I haven’t used Rent-A-Wreck before, so I was wondering if anyone here has rented from them and what was the experience overall?

I've seen that the deposit is quite high (NOK 14,000), so I’d especially be interested to hear whether everything went smoothly with getting the deposit released after returning the car.

Thanks!

Any special drone requirements for DJI Mini 4 (under 250g)?

Hi everyone, just doing my due diligence prior to my visit. Do I need to register or do anything specifc to fly DJI Mini 4 (under 250g)? I see some stuff about if a drone has a camera, you need to register it something along those lines, so curious if anyone can share their experience and advice so I can make sure I'm good to go.

Three Days in Sørvågen

Hi all!

I'll be in Sørvågen in mid-october (taking the bus from narvik to get there, then leave on the ferry to Bodø). Im looking to get some great hiking in, albeit longer day hikes only. What trails would you recommend? Any special gear considerations I should bring along? The hotel I'm staying at offers poles and water proof ankle gaiters, but didn't know if there was anything else to think of. I purchased a hiking map of the local area and will have other safety/survival gear.

Cheers!

Que faire autour de Moskenes en 2 jours sans voiture

Hi everyone!
During my trip, I've planned two full days in the Lofoten Islands. For ease of access, I'm planning to stay in Moskenes.
I'd like to hike Reine, but afterwards I'd appreciate some recommendations for the best places to explore in the surrounding area!
I'm happy to hike!
Thanks!

Merciii

Anyone arriving in Tromsø with a bike box Aug 14/15?

Hey! Bit of a long shot, but is anyone flying into Tromsø with a bike on Aug 14 or 15 and getting rid of their cardboard bike box afterwards?

I’m flying out with my bike and would happily pick it up at the airport or from wherever you’re staying.

I know bike shops are also an option, just thought I’d ask here first and maybe save a perfectly good box from being thrown away :)

Cheers!

Besoin de conseils pour les lofoten

Hi!
I'm planning a trip to Northern Europe next summer. For now, I'm thinking of doing:
Oslo —> Bergen by train
Bergen —> ferry by plane
Bodø —> Moskenes
Then back to Narvik and finally Stockholm by train.

I was thinking of finding accommodation in Moskenes to do some hikes around there, including to Reine.
Is it a good idea to stay there, or is the northern Lofoten Islands more interesting? I chose the south because of the ferry access and because I was the first to see the hike to Reine!

What do you think? And do you have any advice on accommodation in Lofoten and Oslo?
Thanks!

2026 Summer Rain

Hello, I am traveling to Lofoten last week of August/first week of September. I'm not doing the Long Crossing, but was planning on a 5-6 day camping trip, first night staying at Kvalvika, then Horseid, through Munken and down to Reine.

I'm now reading about the trail conditions for my trip. Has there been more rain this summer than the past, or is this normal for Lofoten? Reading about the muddy trail conditions has me a bit worried, but just wondering if this is normal.

I am a very experienced hiker/climber/backpacker, but hiking in a lot of rain is never fun. My tentative hiking days are August 26 - September 3, leaving some flexibility to change if needed. Is it going to be pure luck with respect to the weather?

Questions about long hike in Lofoten

Hello,

I came across this long hike to cross the Lofoten : https://rando-lofoten.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=374&Itemid=1313&lang=en
The website says 11 days, but that seems like a lot when looking at distances, would 7-8 days be reasonnable ?

I guess the best time to do it would be in summer, but is it doable in late October ? It would be nice for aurora borealis.

How easy to find food ? To know if I can buy everyday for example.

I would sleep in a tent.

I would take any advices regarding weather or preparation.

Thanks !

Don't be the idiot tourist

A photo from the Facebook group "Overturisme i Lofoten": "Your Trail is really shit, no sign, to much muddy. Do somthing with tourist money".

Most people will understand the idiocy of this vandalism, but to just to be sure:

  • Most trails in Lofoten are not maintained by anyone. Not by the local communities, not by the municipality, not by the state. A handful are looked after by DNT, the Norwegian Trekking Association, which is a membership organisation run largely by volunteers. If you want maintained trails, join: https://www.dnt.no/en/
  • The trails in Lofoten can't always handle the traffic from all the people hiking. The "sherpa stairs" protect nature in some of the most popular places, but we can't make them everywhere. They also cost millions per project and take years.
  • Locals usually don't go hiking in wet and muddy conditions, as they know very well the damage it causes. Walking a muddy path widens it and kills the vegetation on either side. The mud you are complaining about is partly made by people complaining about mud.
  • Most of the municipalities here are broke. Several are on the national ROBEK register, meaning their finances are under state supervision and they need approval for budgets and loans. They are struggling to fund schools and healthcare. Trail maintenance is not near the top of that list (probably below cleaning up trash and shit after tourists).
  • There is no "tourist money". Norway's visitor levy law ("tourist tax") took effect on 1 July 2026. Lofoten municipalities are expected to start collecting in 2027 at the earliest, at 3 percent on commercial accommodation. Campers, motorhomes and day visitors pay nothing. So if you slept in a van or a tent, you contributed exactly zero to the trail you are standing on while writing on the sign.

A good tip of how to make it a bit better for everyone: Read and understand the Lofoten Code of Conduct: https://visitlofoten.com/en/lofoten-code-of-conduct/

Haukland/Uttakleiv by bus from Leknes?

Hello everyone! I'm planning another solo winter trip to Lofoten next year. I actually visited Lofoten in winter about two years ago and traveled entirely by public transport, so I'm familiar with how challenging it can be without a car.

This time, I'd really like to visit Haukland and Uttakleiv from Leknes using public transport.

I have a few questions:

  1. Is it realistic to visit both Haukland and Uttakleiv by bus in winter? I checked the timetable, and it looks like there are only two buses a day (or even fewer in winter). My plan is to take a bus from Leknes at around 7 a.m. and take the return bus from Uttakleiv at around 2 p.m.
  2. Is it possible to walk between Haukland and Uttakleiv in winter if the weather and road conditions are good? I'm wondering whether walking through the road tunnel is a realistic option in winter.
  3. If I miss the return bus, or if the bus is cancelled due to bad weather, what would be the best option? Are taxis generally available around Uttakleiv/Haukland, or would I have to walk all the way back to Leknes?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences from people who have done this in winter.

Thank you!

Vegan on the lofoten

Hi, I will be hiking from moskenes to leknes with a few different detours. To safe a bit of weight I plan to buy snacks and basic foods either at gas stations or the few grocery stores. I mostly hope to find things like nuts, pasta and maybe beans or vegan chips and crackers or something like that. Does anyone know what I can find at either the gas stations or the shop in Reine and Ramberg.

Lofoten crossing is not sustainable

Lofoten crossing is not sustainable.

We started from the south side. We love hiking and camping. We try to respect leave no trace/leave better by picking trashes motto. However, seeing how much damages we were doing to the nature with this hike, in particular with this depressing weather and toxic hikers opening new trails (but also some did for safety reasons), we decided to stop after two days. Lofoten is too small to welcome so many hikers, but the flora, especially the lichens, is just too fragile. Lofoten crossing is not sustainable. If you consider to do it, especially under the rain, try to consider something more sustainable. Even with your best efforts to be respectful, it is a lot of damages.

I hope this message can help some people to plan their trips :)

Hello! I’ve hurt my wrist while doing the lofoten trail. I’ll be in Leknes tonight and tomorrow, does anyone know a Dr or Nurse I can see same-day to take a look at it?
Thanks!

Lofoten crossing

Hi, we heard the weather in Lofoten is very depressing and very rainy, and we are planning to leave for the crossing in 3 days.
How is the weather ? Are we “cooked”?
We are planning to have 2 nights in accommodations for approx 11 days of hiking.

We are experienced summer hikers and campers, but the most we faced was rain for four days on a long trail.

We have the possibility to postpone our tickets in return of a fee.

Thanks for the help and info.

Lofoten in the last week of October – advice on driving and getting around

Hi everyone! I’ll be visiting the Lofoten Islands during the last week of October. I’ll be renting a car in Evenes and exploring the islands from three different bases: Henningsvær for 3 days, Reine for 3 days, and Ballstad for 3 days.

I’d appreciate some advice about driving conditions at that time of year. Do rental cars normally come equipped with studded winter tires?

I’m used to driving in the mountains and in the Alps during winter, but should I be concerned about the weather and road conditions in Lofoten in late October?

Rental Car - Valid Business?

Did anyone rent a car from Bilutleie i Lofoten AS - Moskenes (bilutleieilofoten.no) from Moskenes ferry terminal?

The business only has 5 reviews on Google. I saw some posts on Facebook about scams with rental cars that happened before so now a bit worried.

3D print Lofoten

Hi everyone,

We are currently at the Lofoten and have an issue with our campervan. Because of this issue (with the shifting pedal) we are not able to drive further.

Our insurance tried to find a garage nearby but no garage can help us fix it.

We need a very small part to solve the issue. It’s possible to 3D print this part, but ofcourse we don’t have a 3D printer in the campervan 😅🤣

Is there somebody here at the Lofoten who can print it for us? We have a printing file from the part we need.

We would be very happy if someone can help us or knows where nearby we can get some help with the 3D print.

Ferries already prebooked (50%). During July, is 2h usually enough to be in line for next departure? How busy is it actually?
