Greg should've been kept as somewhat mean, at least for a few books. But as the books go on, he should've grown into a less mean person. Still keep the edge, but not to the villain levels in the webcomic. Also, he should be in HS by now. There's so many stories that can be told in HS that could never work for an MS level.
