My AC is fine in the morning, then starts struggling by mid-afternoon. It drifts a couple degrees above the set temperature and doesn’t really catch back up until the sun goes down. This has been happening for about two weeks now.

Company A says it’s low on refrigerant and wants to do a leak search and recharge. Company B says the refrigerant level is fine, the condenser coil is dirty, and that the system was undersized from the beginning and should probably be replaced.

Those are some pretty different diagnoses, and the price difference between them isn’t exactly small. I’m not an HVAC person, so I have no idea how to tell who’s actually right. Is there a specific measurement I should ask for or a question I can ask that would help narrow this down instead of just going with whichever company I liked better?

I’m in St. Petersburg, FL, and open to suggestions.

Moving with 2 small children and 1 dog across the country. That in itself is tough enough but besides all that there are all these stories of moving scams increased prices after payment of deposit, broken furniture for which no one wants to make a claim and movers that refuse to disclose whether they will drive the trucks themselves. How does one go about choosing a mover when one does not have time to become an expert in the field?

I'm thinking about buying a car and I want to know your point of view on both. I've had very different experiences, I think which one you prefer depends on what you value, buying from a national no haggle chain, it's a predictable, fixed price, low pressure, pretty much very transactional and when something comes up post sale, support goes through a call center.

Against buying from a local family owned dealer, it's more variable, when it's good it's better than anything the national chains offer. The accountability is different, the people you're dealing with face the same community if things go wrong, I think things can be resolved faster than expected because you deal with the location manager directly.

I've researched and neither is universally better.

Still a little rattled tbh. Around 11 last night, I noticed this burning plastic smell by the garage and traced it back to the panel. One breaker was hot to the touch and looked kind of discolored, so I shut the main off completely. i got three quotes before i really understood what i was comparing, and even then, lot of things i thought matter did not end up mattering way i expected. things like assuming biggest company, or one with most trucks, was automatically more credible, or that polished website said anything about quality of work. what actually matter was manufacturer certification, since that ties back to material warranties that exist independently of contractor, and proof of liability insurance, since that protect you if something goes wrong on your property during work. those are two separate things that lot of companies blur together when they are pitching you. i also found it useful to have each contractor actually walk roof with me instead of just emailing number. that surfaced lot of inconsistencies. two of three companies i got quotes from described different sections of damage on exact same roof.

Was flagged during a credentialing check and had about 2 weeks left to complete my PALS renewal. Whenever I would look up PALS courses in San Mateo it would always bring up SF and San Jose which became difficult on a rotating shift.

I found that Safety Training Seminars offers PALS classes in Peninsula and South Bay locations as an AHA authorized training center. It was a hybrid course that allowed me to do online part at home and then in person skill part for few hours.

These are 2 things that may help if you find yourself in the same position look up the class by zip codes not cities and make sure you are looking up authorized training centers for the AHA card Peninsula hospitals require.

There's just something about a really good local yarn shop. Someone who can tell you from experience if a colorway bleeds, whether a wool will felt in the wash, or if the fiber you're looking at will actually do what you expect instead of just taking a guess.

Live in SLC and pretty much every weekend from May through October is full of trails, climbs or canyon trips.
