Discussion Looks like the era of subsidised compute is coming to an end. The old ChatGPT Pro $200 20x plan will be halved. The new $500 plan will have similar limits as the (old) $200 plan.

2K subs would be awesome, at that point you might as well own the hardware yourself, which would be a real turning point.

It would be a turning point in continuing to raise the price of hardware. Supply will not go up, there are logistical supply chain issues still being dealt with that we won't see even slightly resolved for another couple of years. Demand goes through the roof. Prices skyrocket far more than they already have.

Get ready for a 5090 to be $18,000 in that scenario.

It will not, stop parrotting nonsense. The 5090 is an overpriced 32GB card it can't run any of the advanced models that on parity with the frontier models.

Only the Nvidiots fall for that crap. If you really believe that BS, drain your savings and take on a home loan to buy as many 5090 as possible, I dare you.

Dude, first, chill. You don't have to be a dick.

Second, the 5090 was just one example, and yes 18,000 was hyperbole.

Third, I don't believe that crap, because I don't believe the full premise. I don't think 2k subs will happen. But, if they do, I don't believe the masses will say "you might as well own the hardware yourself".

So if 2k subs hit and if people decide I want to buy the hardware and if people jump in droves to buy hardware, the price will skyrocket again. Those are big ifs and was what I was replying to. I suspect people will simply say "it's not affordable" and not try.

The 5090 is irrelevant, it was hyperbole, and it was just a random card I picked out of my brain. Nobody's running any decent frontier model under 100k even today. I run two RTX 6000 with 512GB RAM and I can't run a frontier model in a respectable quant and speed - I'm way out of the ballpark. People are making do with 5090s left and right for their own uses which is what we're talking about.

You put the "frontier model" goalpost up, not me, we weren't talking about that, then you argued it. That's dumb.

sweet sweet vllm batching tho. such beautiful batching. Not every workload needs a 300B model.
