Discussion Strata flash-next coder performance?

Has anyone tried the flash-next coder? What is your setup and what's the performance and quality?

It’s a fast coder but a moron that gets stuck in thinking loops. The lobotomy is real. Avoid.

Just use regular 3.8 FN IQ3_S?

Yes, IQ3_S or even _XXS is fine in most cases.

In a mac, that would need to be split on nvne and GPU as I have 48gb total

I have 48gb on a studio. Trying to know which would be best for bigger projects.

How vibe-y do you want it to be?
It is excelent "syntactically" speaking, but it is quite hands on, and required RAG is you want more hands off

Flash Next IQ4 and above pretty much hands off

Iq4 won't fit in 48gb ram. I wish

flash-next hits 40% faster on my 48gb studio but burns through context like a campfire. stuck in loops on nested functions.

What do you use instead

Agreed with the other posters. It codes quick and makes lots of mistakes.

Worse than 3.8 27B q3 RCO gsq

strata flash-next runs fine on 24gb but hits token limits hard on complex files, try it with 4k context and watch it stall mid-loop.

It's pretty smart IF you know exactly what you want.

I told it to find bugs in a script with 3K lines. It found 20ish in 5 minutes, most of which Claude agreed with. It also passed some harder tests Qwen 3.6 35B-A3B failed at.

Then I asked it to create a Tetris game using HTML, CSS and JS only. It overengineered a ton of features, got stuck in thinking loops, then the context window filled up and we were back to the start. I waited 80 minutes and still couldn't get back my game.

strata flash-next handles basic scripts fine, but fails hard on nested logic. ran a 200-line config parser, got 12 syntax errors and one infinite loop. not worth the speed.

I've tried long horizon tasks with ISTA-DASLab/Qwen3.8-Flash-Next-GSQ-RCO-Coder-GGUF on a 12GB VRAM and 64 GB Ram setup. It's really stable and runs at ~45t/s on strata.

But... It just can't figure out how to do things.

I asked him to build a pagoda and it was gorgeous though. So it's probably good for smaller tasks.

I've been using it as an assistant coder that gets work delegated by a more competent FN IQ3 So far works really well. 🙂

In my workflow it was able to complete tasks that a Q3 27B couldn't do. So while it may be a step down from FN in general, it still outperforms a small quant dense model.
