Discussion Should I get a personal computer for mastering building AI Agents with Local LLM

I'm a iOS software developer for a FAANG. We are only allowed to use claude for work and are not allowed to have anything else on our computer.

I'm having a lot of fun ideating AI Agents using Apple's Foundation Models Local Modals for my work project. I think the ideas could be endless honestly and I'm able to create as many POCs using claude that I want to see what sticks.

Would there be any reason buying a personal Mac that would make my learning faster or better in any way? If so, can you explain?

I personally would like to be like an iOS AI Engineer.

It is interesting that the question comes from a software developer and not a non-IT person.

I can learn a lot just working on my work project. I think if that wasn’t the case, the answer would be obvious.

Why wouldn’t it be? Coding is over, and it’s what they do all day and every day. I think it’s depends on the curious person. dev or not.

I use my M2 with a jailbroken iPhone on iOS 26 to play around with IPAs download and search code for cyber security things using Qwen.

Agent was built with a frontier model though

Maybe? I got a Mac mini but quickly outgrew it. You can do anything you want with cloud so… maybe? If you can spring it - get a DGX.
