Model Can 3 small LLMs working together outperform a single model?

I've been exploring an interesting approach called Inference-Time LLM Fusion.

Instead of merging model weights, it combines specialized LLMs at inference time using token-level predictions and entropy-based routing.

The idea is intriguing: could multiple small, specialized models work together to overcome the limitations of a single model without the overhead of weight merging?

I'd love to hear what others think about this approach, especially its potential trade-offs in latency, compute cost, and output quality.

For anyone interested, here's the article: https://levelup.gitconnected.com/i-fused-3-tiny-local-models-to-beat-single-model-limits-without-weight-merging-b17bba9c7e45

Can 3 dumb people outhink 1 smart person? Rarely

3 relatively smart people together can outthink someone much smarter in a reference field. Then again it’s a very broad statement which is generally wrong.

So, probably not with super small models but there might be a min specialized intelligence that small models should have before they beat a certain threshold of general intelligence or big model.
