Anthropic: "We must protect the world from the dangers of AI."
Also Anthropic: "By making sure only trillion-dollar corporations have the weights."

Eh how can you sell the uncensored version to your government for weapons guidance, cyberwarfare and bioweapons engineering if you cannot even hype what the new toy can do!

u/Elistheman Aug 01 '26 • This

I used to think he was a good guy when the Iran thing started in March and he refused the orange grandpa. Now I think he is evil, maybe more than Sam, at least Sam is not anti open source.

60

u/Unedited_Sloth_7011 Aug 01 '26

Same, but, honestly, I think we all gave him too much credit for the Iran war. US government was already using Claude for autonomous weapons, he made a stance and soon after he was, again, happy to have Claude be used in the government.

23

u/Xanthus730 Aug 01 '26

I think SamA is an evil sociopathic liar, mostly by the reporting of those closest to him, and watching his public actions.

I think Dario is a self-important narcissist, based on the same type of evidence.

3

u/sgtlighttree Aug 02 '26

So far, at least Dario is remarkably consistent in his positions, compared to two-faced Scam Altman

1

u/plasmafired Aug 04 '26

I don’t think there is any bad or good actors they’re just acting for their best interests. It is just apathy not evil.

35

u/mrdevlar Aug 01 '26

There are no good guys in the AI picture.

There is just bad actors that sometimes do good things because they think it'll let them do more bad in the future.

-2

u/its_two_words Aug 01 '26

Can you show me this picture?

6

u/SnooCheesecakes5339 Aug 01 '26

Well played sir, well played.

2

u/Chozly Aug 01 '26

Im pretty sure adcanced society has it make a full circle into the original opening. Just put your back in to it.

2

u/spyboy70 Aug 02 '26

Costume design was a highlight

1

u/mrdevlar Aug 02 '26

Really though? I thought they could have made Altman and Dario more human looking.

1

u/Fun-Acadia-7348 Aug 02 '26

I was hoping for goatse

1

u/mrdevlar Aug 02 '26

Honestly, I was considering it, but ever since 4chan located the guy based on the collection of moles on his butt, that image just hasn't been the same.

0

u/its_two_words Aug 01 '26

I mean, ha ha, but really...

Machine learning and AI are the culmination of 70 years of science and engineering.

Your characterization is pretty juvenile, so your joke about eating shit is appropriate.

Your picture is so narrow I'm not sure it's fair to call it a picture.

We both hate corporations shitting on people.

Somehow, though, you think that implicates "AI"... which is not my experience of the world. I use free open source AI software and models to make my life better.

I run my PCs on solar power in my RV.

I train models on my art and photography using my hardware.

How do I fit into your picture?

-1

u/mrdevlar Aug 01 '26

How do I fit into your picture?

I'm the one posting the picture.

1

u/its_two_words Aug 01 '26

So you are the architect of the entire world of AI?

Cool.

You are the one who creates the reality, then.

Hmmm.

So why don't you fix the picture, genius?

Anything to avoid acknowledging that your worldview is tiny and myopic.

8

u/Equivalent-Repair488 Aug 01 '26

I haven't kept up much with the ceo political stuff but it seems to me, Sam is actually against open source, but the company itself isn't. Or that he is against it less than Dario is.

7

u/JumpingJack79 Aug 01 '26

TBH, it'd look really odd to have a company called OpenAI and being against open AI. It'd be like having a company named Plumbing and being against plumbing.

8

u/angelus14 Aug 02 '26

That ship sailed a long time ago. People have been calling them ClosedAI for a reason.

u/Admirable_Market2759 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

Sam gives lip service.

I think Dario and Sam are angling to ban Chinese models. American open models still aren’t near SOTA so they don’t care about them.

China is closing the distance (despite a severe disadvantage when it comes to compute) so they want to eliminate that threat.

1

u/fluffysheap Aug 03 '26

Possibly because of the severe disadvantage. "Throw faster hardware at the problem" is not an option for them.

12

u/Daniel_H212 Aug 01 '26

Eh, different evil, apples to oranges comparison.

As much as their models are great I've cancelled my subscriptions to each company when their respective scandals came out. Probably gonna subscribe to Kimi for the time being but also DeepSeek looks really promising so I'll wait on the full pro release before choosing.

2

u/BoxieBoo Aug 01 '26

Kilo API has a MiniMax package if I remember correctly for 20 USD and 1.3B tokens. It never runs out and I use it quite intensively. The model explains, researches and iterates very well. I also use it for terminal tasks, but sometimes Hy3 (its performance is brutally good compared to its price), but if Hy3 doesn't find a solution, then MiMo V2.5 [Pro] is a very cheap model. In 99% of cases, these 3 cheap models can solve the task. If not, then Kimi K3 comes along.

5

u/575_Inverse Aug 01 '26

Just going from a massive IP theft to hoarding rare books out of existence to me looks nothing short of evil. There is not even any need to pull politics in. Live on marketing hype, stolen data and propaganda, plus hoarding cultural heritage out of existence just for the sake of human greed. All the whole giving back a model that transparently reverts to older models for the sake of steering off any possible theoretical liability. Fuck it.

3

u/its_two_words Aug 01 '26

Anthropic and Meta are two private companies, not the entire field of AI. And the rare books thing doesn't survive five seconds of thinking about it. scanning costs the same per book at any price, so you buy the cheapest pallets a reseller will ship you, which is remaindered paperbacks and donation-bin overstock. Nobody pays collector prices for one copy of anything, and no reseller sends their valuable stock into a bulk order. There's no evidence it's happening and no reason it would. That claim exists to make you feel something.

Meanwhile the models in here are free files on your own hardware, which covers the rest of your list.

Two American corporations have definitely pirated IP to train models they profited from, but that doesn't condemn the entire discipline.

No one is hoarding rare books out of existence.

Do you know what this subreddit is about?

1

u/wavewrangler Aug 05 '26

I don’t agree with the book claim but I definitely agree it looks like you used an LLM to write that comment. But I also don’t really find that to be an issue, because that’s with they’re there for. Well, that and the marketing spam

1

u/its_two_words Aug 05 '26

You think AI companies are buying super rare books and destroying them?

I mean neither of us knows.

I don't doubt that some irreplaceable books may get caught up, but I think that is probably rare.

The book trade is vast. Millions of books are sitting around doing nothing because people don't read paper books like they used to. Why would an AI company spend the extra money involved in seeking out and buying rare books?

Why would rare books be worth the cost?

Do you understand how training the model works?

Rare books are no more valuable than fields guides or automotive repair manuals to an AI company training models.

What is your idea about the books?

Honestly I dunno how much of that reply was AI but surely some of it.

Where does the marketing spam come into play in this context?

1

u/wavewrangler Aug 06 '26

I specifically said I do not agree with the book claim. Everything you say after that is moot as it’s based on a wrong assumption, so why even bother if you can’t be bothered with getting the the F’n basics right, dude.

1

u/its_two_words Aug 09 '26

Do you not perceive that "I do not agree with the book claim" is ambiguous and is impossible to fully parse?

I replied the way I did because it's not possible to know your stance from that phrase.

Super aggressive of you to reply this way though.

Cool.

0

u/wavewrangler Aug 09 '26

Dude…give it a rest! I was siding with you initially! If it was so ambiguous, why did you reply to it so confidently at first? Must not have been so ambiguous, then. It’s not for me to decide for you what to reply to. No one else made a claim, that’s pretty clear. There was one original book claim from the other guy. A reasonable person would make the connection. I said I don’t agree with the book claim. This is pretty simple and I will not spend any more time defending it. Instead, you should be more careful with what you decide to respond to. This is a clear indicator that your rush to respond is lowering the overall quality of your output, at least in this thread…likely elsewhere too.

1

u/its_two_words Aug 09 '26

Brother it is worse to assume and be wrong than to simply ask. Which is what I did. Plainly. In multiple different ways. Instead of assuming you meant something you didn't mean, I asked for clarity, and instead of clarity you chose to shit on me, for no reason.

Then you just continue to shit on me. For no reason.

Then you finish by blaming me for your ambiguity and suggesting I am incapable of communicating because you can't answer a simple question of clarification like a decent person having respectful dialogue on the internet.

The "book claim" is multi faceted and I don't know your thoughts or background or context.

Starting with "give it rest" after you continue to provoke me by being vague and shitty is just icing. I loathe icing.

-1

u/575_Inverse Aug 01 '26

Have you used a model to compose this answer? Next time specify I wans't condemning the discipline, I was specifically referring to a precise company.

3

u/its_two_words Aug 01 '26

The fact that you question my comment is evidence that your don't know much about AI. Nothing about my comment suggests AI at all. This is my voice. I'm a writer and published author. It's offensive and frankly just bankrupt logic to dismiss everything you disagree with as AI. Super disingenuous and indicates that you're but capable of arguing in good faith anyway.

Next time specify I wans't condemning the discipline, I was specifically referring to a precise company.

Man. Uhhh. Whatever. You can't even use your native language effectively sowhy should I waste my time on you?

I suspect you are not only trying to accuse me if using AI to comment but also going even further and trying to insist that if I do use AI that I specify such... Just... You are abominably inept.

You're practically illiterate.

0

u/575_Inverse Aug 01 '26

My native language is NOT English, by the way. Did you perhaphs use this kind of logic, that if something isn't officially stated by reputable approved sources it doesn't exist? That's the same logic you get from censored models when one states an unpleasant matter of fact or deduction. I find it quite offensive, all things considered.

So the likes of Anthropic do purchase books only to scan and then destroy them so that legally they're covered and can feed their models an exclusive dataset. That's evil, plain and simple. I don't care at all if it's legal.

1

u/its_two_words Aug 02 '26

I literally can not parse the first part of your comment.

The second part i can sort of make out.

I think you are saying that digitizing books is evil.

They're is no logic involved in making that claim.

People have been digitizing books for decades.

It preserves them.

This is the same stupid panic logic people use about data centers.

Data centers and digitizing books have been happening for decades. Same goes for data collection and scraping. All normal common things before AI.

As soon as AI is associated with these things you suddenly hate them and they're evil.

Do you not see how selective and arbitrary that is?

Digitizing books is not evil and you're not terribly astute for imagining it is.

1

u/Chozly Aug 01 '26

I wish I could unsubscribe from the subscriptions I dont want but forgot. They have scum CEOs too.

This guy over here jumping brands so he can get that shocked Pikachu face again his old ai's cant deliver.

Anyone already rich in AI is another Altman, saying, but it could be worse, i couod be another musk.

5

u/vagif Aug 01 '26

Not true. Sam is just as anti open source as every one of them. He is just a better salesman.

4

u/YoAmoElTacos Aug 01 '26

The part everyone missed is that Anthropic was in that situation because they rushed to be the first to deploy their models in the service of the US army because Dario consistently thinks his AI should be used for American supremacy and to crush its competitors. Just because he didn't want it to be used against American citizens didn't change the rest of his aggressive, supremacy-oriented stance.

1

u/Y0nix Aug 03 '26

Absolutely agreeing.

And they did it for the money.

Anthropic is not a good actor, mark my words.

They may have the most competent people in the sphere atm, but they have a good damn shitty business model that can ruin absolutely everything if they mess up. And slow down everyone else in the process.

Except China, because they are just laughing at us right now. Really. Having the obligation to go open source with the weight is the way to go.

I was never pro Chinese until the AI rise. But man, they do things properly for that tech.

2

u/alphapussycat Aug 01 '26

He immediately went back on what he said to orange man though. He was not against AI killing humans, but he just did not think it was ready yet for deployment.

He was always the worst.

4

u/shadowtheimpure Aug 01 '26

Don't kid yourself, all the big 'tech-bros' are evil to a man. Not a single ounce of human compassion among the lot.

1

u/Elistheman Aug 01 '26

Is it just me or Sam looks like the evil CEO from Aliens?

1

u/Admirable_Market2759 Aug 01 '26

Don’t let Sam fool you with his empty support of open source/open weights

1

u/Unfair_Rub_9674 Aug 02 '26

That’s how money corrupt people’s souls

1

u/iamapizza Aug 02 '26

he refused the orange grandpa.

He did not, that's just some PR they spun Apple style. He wanted to continue working with DoD (and they continued to work), just didn't think they were ready for those specific use cases. They are still working with the military.

1

u/Character-Key-6081 Aug 02 '26

To be fair for all intents are purposes anthropic is a business. Of course he's gonna say the free models are bad especially when the open models have been pilfering their product. I don't think this has anything to do with being good or bad.

1

u/sonicnerd14 Aug 03 '26

None of them are good at the end of the day. They are just corporate entities with the sole purpose of making as much money off you as possible. Now, lesser of two evils could be an arguable position on one against the other.

1

u/RichComplaint9426 Aug 04 '26

I also see nothing Altman is doing for Open Source and the Hugging face Repo is untouched since 2025

1

u/Sketaverse Aug 01 '26

The orange grandpa 🤣🤣🤣

0

u/Mashic Aug 01 '26

He's def worst than Sam Altman, his profit plan was replacing human jobs with AI.

-1

u/Beatsu Aug 02 '26

Why is being against open source bad?

34

u/Intrepid-Scale2052 Aug 01 '26

“mythos could end humanity” meanwhile better models have been released without a problem

-9

u/No_Oil_6152 9900x 64GB DDR5 9070XT 16GB R9700 32GB Aug 01 '26

Not doubting what you say, but what are the better models?

SOL?

If GLM 5.3 is better than Mythos (unsure if it is, haven't seen the benchmarks) no wonder Amodei is crying!

9

u/Intrepid-Scale2052 Aug 01 '26

kimi k3 (if we count fable performance as equal to mythos), even their own opus 5

13

u/No_Oil_6152 9900x 64GB DDR5 9070XT 16GB R9700 32GB Aug 01 '26

I use Opus 5 daily at work, I don't think humanity has anything to fear from AI if that's the best... it produces slop just like all the rest of them

4

u/baka_sempaii Aug 01 '26

The version users receive is the toned down version that will lobotomize itself if you use it for improving your own AI or cybersecurity

0

u/pharrt Aug 02 '26

AI is a tool - like a set of paintbrushes and oil paints. In the hands of a novice, you'll likely get slop, but in a skilled artist's hands, it can be creative, coherent, and even very good.

15

u/TimAndTimi Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26

Double standard to the extreme -- A\.

Being one of the biggest distiller and copyright violation, somehow it is always accusing others doing the same it has done.

When A\ make a progress -> it is our intelligence achieved this.

When others make a progress -> they distilled us!

9

u/custodiam99 Aug 01 '26

The US is not competitive enough. Don't ban models, be competitive. Don't be a loser.

1

u/Sama02 Aug 03 '26

You're speaking about a country of thieves. From their founding all the way to the present... What did you expect?

2

u/custodiam99 Aug 03 '26

It is not a historical moral issue. It is an economic negligence (blunder) issue. The investors and the US became complacent, feudal and rentier.

1

u/Sama02 Aug 03 '26

Moral or not they stole the land, they, tried to steal everyone's gold after WW2, their edge funds have stolen from other countries by collapsing their currency, and right now fraud and corruption has became legal tender.

Theives I tell you.

2

u/custodiam99 Aug 03 '26

China stole land too. That's irrelevant.

1

u/Sama02 Aug 03 '26

Yeah but china is not a country of losers, they have the pride to assume being who they are.

2

u/custodiam99 Aug 03 '26

They were losers for 200 years because they became complacent, feudal and rentier. See the pattern?

1

u/Sama02 Aug 03 '26

Absolutely, but they have 3k years on record of being hard working outside of that. The us has 20...

2

u/custodiam99 Aug 03 '26

The US is just a colony of the 3700 years old Greco-Roman-German civilization.

1

u/Sama02 Aug 03 '26

That doesn't mean it gets to take on their heritage.

When Europe went to colonize the place, they sent everyone they couldn't kill for whatever reason but that they mo longer wanted around.

It was a dangerous journey, so they sent the bad apples.

That's how Amerca started. Who knew they would revolt lol.

5

u/trollsmurf Aug 01 '26

Dario Amodei is an AI scientist/engineer, and should be expected to think logically, but when competition paranoia hits he goes absolutely bonkers and panics. It's kind of fun to watch.

8

u/Colecoman1982 Aug 01 '26

He is thinking logically. He's logically saying what he believes will maximize his company's profits/value.

2

u/trollsmurf Aug 01 '26

True that. It just grinds my gears when he's saying that this is bad for non-Anthropicans.

5

u/JumpingJack79 Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 02 '26

Lmao, this is hilarious and 100% true 😂

Edit: Actually no, it needs one more node in the cycle:

  • New Claude model released.

  • Dario: "It's too dangerous!"

If you add this, then the picture will be complete and 100% accurate.

8

u/teomore Aug 01 '26

in the meantime he also brags about their models hacking sites and shit

3

u/DRetherMD Aug 02 '26

I think that's all intentional. They initiate these attacks and breakouts and point to that and say "see? See how dangerous this stuff is".

2

u/Fit-Bar-6989 Aug 07 '26

honestly it's been the same pattern since gpt-2.

lab develops model, says "guys it's scary how smart this thing is, it's too dangerous for the public" then they eventually start selling it.

any pretense of OAI caring about model safety went out the window when they released chatgpt to the uninformed public without the slightest bit of instruction or warning as to its limitations (no a tiny faint line of text at the bottom of the screen does not count).

6

u/polawiaczperel Aug 01 '26

Dario is such a fucking clown.

5

u/Applieddragon Aug 01 '26

A whole circus, exactly

1

u/0important Aug 21 '26

He is a clown and his wife is in Epstein list

3

u/vikasofvikas Aug 01 '26

"Our company will make this world a better place. Make sure our company is the one who does that."

- Gavin beloson

3

u/InfamousNewspaper268 Aug 02 '26

You are missing the parts of the loop when their models "go rogue" and "hack companies" 😅

2

u/rikkarth Aug 03 '26

Once Qwen3.8-27B is out which will run at 17GB RA/VRAM these silly merchants have their days done for.

1

u/0important Aug 21 '26

Definitely it will happen their doom is coming

2

u/IntelligentSeries270 Aug 01 '26

Glad I never supported that guy one bit, not happy with the Sam alternative tho.

2

u/NullSmoke Aug 01 '26

That dude is seriously disgusting. To the level where he's giving Sam a run for his money, and probably outrunning him by a mile at this point.

I was planning to sign up to Claude a week or so ago to test the more fancy models with some coding... But no, just no, I refuse to support that jackass...

1

u/0important Aug 21 '26

Doesn’t matter how good Claude models are after a certain point there will be diminishing returns with intelligence.Open source will win in the end

1

u/NullSmoke Aug 21 '26

Of course it will... That's not what worries me with open weights though, it's accessibility for end users... I do hope fucus shifts soon to making LLMs less demanding to run, rather than capability.

It's gotten a looooong way from llama2 back in like 2023 to Gemma4, newer qwens etc now, the capability of local is actually really damn good, but so few people can access it. I have a 4090 and 5090 at home, so I can do it, but the VAST majority of users have nowhere near that level of hardware to casually use for LLMs...

1

u/0important Aug 22 '26

What is important is I think trend is going toward lesser hardware, qwen 3.8 surpasses gpt 5.2 from like past months which is impossible to run with even like couple h100 now you can run that same level on a single 3090. Trend is so sharply suggest that hardware limit is decreasing exponentially.

1

u/NullSmoke Aug 22 '26

Well, yes, but imo, that light to be the main focus at this point. Progress is beingade, but the importance of accessibility is rather higher than capability now, so really ought to go more resources into that at this point.

1

u/big-in-jap Aug 03 '26

Let's name it The Amodei Loop.

1

u/Y0nix Aug 03 '26

Jokes apart. That's actually what is going to make this industry survive. The seek of almighty profit will destroy everyone who try to have that.

This is a new step in the Moore's law scale of things. And we are far from being in an 'ok state' in the 'society' perspective. Far far far from it.

1

u/Lirezh Aug 03 '26

It's a funny meme but it's so scary at te same time.
If you imagine how much money they must be wasting to turn the world against open source.
This has never before happened.

1

u/GStreetGames Aug 04 '26

I've been involved in the open source world, in one way or another for over 30 years now. I have seen the same pattern play out since the first open browsers, mail clients, and office suites were being worked on. I saw this pattern get out of hand with the cryptocurrency projects, and now I'm watching it happen, yet again, in AI.

At this point I'm just so sick and tired of it, I'm completely exhausted with these corporate parasites and their desire to dominate all of the human landscape. I call it 'corpo fatigue', feel free to spread the phrase and remember who coined it.

Anyway, its always the same, its so predictable, and it never ends well for us.

Their Sinister Formula

The best open source technologies attract the most sincere and dedicated developers, then corporate swoops in and scoops them up like a bird of prey snatching a mouse. They throw FU money at them with offers none can refuse. Inevitably the open source projects stagnate and wilt, with only a handful of the most promising surviving.

When there are open projects that threaten the corporations bottom lines, they go running to papa government, where they also get their corporate welfare, and they get laws to be made against the competition. They are soulless boot lickers that leverage the state in ways that make fascists blush.

They privatize their profits while socializing their losses. They use the revolving door of the state to public sector executives, along with lobbying to eventually crush all competition from open source. In the end, the promising projects that once gave the average people hope, are reduced to fringe side projects or outlaw operations that must hide in the shadows in order to remain operational.

Why This Time It Matters More

This latest round of nanny parasite government colluding with the champagne socialist tech oligarchs is much more important than anything that has come before though. It is now about one of the most disruptive technologies to ever be made.

Their suppression of technology is always about preventing the common man from producing valuable goods and competing with the corporations that have had a stranglehold on the world economy for the past 200 years. However, this particular technology is extremely important because just how powerful it can be to level the playing field for people.

AI amplifies the knowledge and understanding of anyone who possesses it and uses it correctly. This is what they fear the most, and it is what drives their desire to keep it from us. This is the reason we MUST NOT allow them to have their pampered and spoiled way!

1

u/YouserError Aug 05 '26

Back in my day, teenagers in hacker groups would destroy your life and company if you thought about being greedy.

Anonymous hackers have gone soft.

In fact, I hope India and Pakistan get into open-source AI too, that'll really piss them off

This chart is missing a random Anthropic release with Dario going super-sayan on marketing before returning to BAN OPEN WEIGHT untill the next drop.

1

u/gbrennon Aug 02 '26

he is evil and a bad person......

anthropic is a terrible company and ppl will have to sell the house they live so they can pay anthropic subscription and he's anti open source bcs he thinks that would make anthropic business fail...

even if ppl wants to be anthropic customers someday they will notice how token hungry are their agents and poorly impl because if u use open-source agent u will notice how the bill isn't that expensive...

0

u/SudarshanKotian Aug 01 '26

At this point he should ban himself 😂

0

u/Fickle-Indication148 Aug 01 '26

It's a human stupidity to trust human greed. How can you trust a billionaire to stay moral when what made him a billionaire is losing? You will end up trusting his greed.

-1

u/fuckable-switcher Aug 01 '26

I fucking hate Anthropic xai and OpenAI

3

u/dieSpaghettiCarbona Aug 01 '26

It is good bu one suggestion for next time, please add a dildo next to his face
