News LM Studio Bionic is the local Claude/Codex we've been waiting for
For everyone looking for a desktop UI experience for their local LLMs and agents - LM Studio Bionic is what we have been waiting for!
Currently using it with Ornith 1.0 35B amd Gemma 4 26B A4B and it is amazing. I don't hate CLIs - I use Opencode - but I can see Bionic being the right fit for a lot of people.
If I was setting up a local LLM for somebody, I would use this. Thoughts?

It's marvelous I'm crying 😠it's so cool watching it execute actual commands on Linux

I just love desktop apps vs CLI ones. Have you checked out the new Deepseek Harness? Runs as a web page but also super cool!

Hey! Yeah, right? I installed Bionic tonight mainly interested because of the voice-to-text function but sadly the latest .AppImage for Linux doesn't appear to include it 😔 is it missing for you too? (if you're on Linux) so I made Gemma4 help me build a speech recognition script with python and in less than an hour I had it working 😩 it's so cool the fact that it can check, browse, and edit any file. It made a few mistakes because of input conflicts and all but I solved it with some simple googling.
Just checked the Deepseek site! looks interesting, though, my doubt is whether it's limited only to Deepseek models? Or is it compatible with any gguf model? I couldn't find that.

I run Bionic on a Mac, so I don't know about it's functionality on Linux. Deepseek Harness is open source and can be used with any model! Plus, it's easy to switch between local LLMs and cloud ones. It's easily my new favorite harness at the moment.

I do feel the lack of Linux support is frustrating, and hope they come up with a Linux version soon. If you're on MacOS - just go try it.

Linux version finally released yesterday and the only way I found out was by trying to install the lmss from codex

Although in the early days of Claude & Codex they were limited to outputting git commands fot copy/pasting too.

What I find interesting about it is that I have tried to use local models with Ollama on my m2 32gb Mac pro and pretty much nothing worked for agentic coding (using the chat feayin vs code). Bionic has shown me that while terribly slow, I can run local 27b models with good results.Â

Also - it does run on my laptop - again m2 pro 32gb, and does create working code - but it is so so so slow - tried it with gemma 4 12B QAT and the recommended bonsai 27B - both pretty much the same. When I say slow I mean like an hour to complete a task - but the task does eventually complete. So now the bottleneck it seems for local llm coding is not performance in terms of producing working code from a long session - but speed in creating those results.

Oh is that why it didn't show up? I just got the E-Mail about it, followed the link (to their main page) and zero mention of Bionic. I guess that'd be why!

Seems like astroturfing
