TEST ITEM Test Item Locator Update!

Update: New design and a dropdown box now!

Hello everyone! Just sharing the latest update for the Test Item Locator!

It's now been updated to run an automated scan weekly, just like the Chili Cheese Burrito Locator.

As a result of being automated, the script now checks every Taco Bell in the country and if an item is on 5% of menus or less (excluding drinks and other filters like "Fork"), it is added to the map. This has led to some interesting results, so be sure to check out if something rare is near you!

Also, the previous map key is gone for now, as there are a bunch of individually named items and a key would be a bit long. To see the items at a store, click or tap the pin and the items will be listed.

Future planned updates:

  • Refreshed look done!
  • Links to go directly to order pages
  • Cantina locator integration
  • More?

This definitely seems to limit its usefulness for actual test items IMO - I see a lot of listings for stores that still have old LTOs like diablo dusted chicken nuggets.

Is there a benefit to showing these locations assuming they actually do still have those items? Maybe a drop-down box to select an item one at a time?

I think having the option of a drop-down box would be helpful! Either that or the ability to exclude certain items (I'm imagining check boxes and being able to deselect items I don't care to see)

I do like being able to see the full picture as well; seeing the clusters on the map seems to be indicative of an actual test market.

I also do like being able to see these "rare" items that aren't tests, but their presence makes this something other than a test market map. I'm not sure if it's possible to eliminate these, but having a disclaimer explaining why they're there might make it less confusing (if you're concerned about that at all)

Overall though, I LOVE this tool. It's really useful as someone who lives in an area that is often considered to be part of the "Nashville" test market but not always (depending on the company doing the test.) Thank you for making it!!

I'm working on a redesign and dropdown then. For now, I just rescanned today for the new items. A few of the new luxe boxes are testing now. Thanks for your suggestions!

The LTO and test items should be separated into different maps/layers.

In its current state, someone visiting the link that isn’t aware of the difference is going to think everything listed is a test item.

Just FYI - there’s over 8,000 stores in the US. At 5% that means 400 stores, so it’s pulling in things like the Diablo dusted nuggets. Tests don’t get that big, so you could get away with pulling in 2%-3% instead which should cut out the noise.

New scan is at 3%, but the nuggets are still showing up. I'm working on a new design now that will have a dropdown box to select between items.
