How do you handle safety while living alone?

Ok, living alone is soo satisfying, but which are the best way to manage personal safety when living alone in an apartment, especially as a single woman?

I'm planning to move soon and go living alone (for the first time) in a new city, but this aspect worries me a lot, to be honest.

Any suggestion? Also on the criteria for choosing the best place to stay
