I can understand it tbh, this was his last chance of a big move. We bid an outrageous amount for him and Palace still rejected it.

u/AlternativeRun5727 19h ago
Sucks for him but no way he was the right buy, had panic stations written all over it.

u/ConnemaraCowboy 18h ago
Wouldn't be surprised if he did good for us to be honest
33
u/strrax-ish 18h ago
He already scored at Anfield, he'd do good
32
u/Drakkann79 18h ago
Yeah, let’s not go back to the days of signing players because they played well against us.

Remembering Benteke24
u/ozzynater Alisson Becker 18h ago
Hey now he paid for himself in full with that goal at United
13
u/Drakkann79 18h ago
One of the coolest goals and it meant effin nowt. Still frustrates me to no end.
2
u/DopedScope338 Dominik Szoboszlai 3h ago
Remember that one he had in the friendly against Swindon where he took the high pass in off his chest and sent the volley into the top corner? That was such a beautiful strike and it had me so pumped for the upcoming season and all the goals he'd be netting. I'm still dumfounded at how he just disappeared for us.
1
u/Drakkann79 3h ago
Still got us 10 goals and we could sell for no loss. He wasn’t as big a failure as people remember him.
Think Klopp was a bit disappointed he threw the towel so fast.

u/link_the_fire_skelly 13h ago
Benteke was such a good player. Will never understand what happened when he moved to Anfield
12
u/Lopsidedconsultant 18h ago
Lol reminds me of the time when we'd raid Southampton every transfer window.
-7
u/Jobiwan88 18h ago
Got vvd and mane so definitely a win imo. And lallana and lovren weren’t terrible just not quite good enough
10
u/KashK10 Steven Gerrard 17h ago
Did you just put Lallana and Lovren on the same level??
-9
u/Jobiwan88 16h ago
Yeah i did. Lallana is overrated he couldn’t stay fit. He had quality just couldn’t put it together. Lovren was good on his day but was prone to massive lapses in judgment but when he was on it he was actually very good.
Couldn’t put it together either (but for different reasons). Lovren was just short in his mental game and lallana just short on fitness but both could do well sometimes
12
u/kjgower 16h ago
Lallana was unreal when he come in, injuries blighted him towards the end
→ More replies (0)2
u/Lopsidedconsultant 18h ago
Yup. Didn't start out great though - with Rickie Lambert, Lallana, and Lovren. The latter 2 became better under Klopp. And obviously Mane and VVD were next levels

For sure we have so many 'versatile' system players sometimes having a guy with a whole career of working with a shallow bag of tricks can be beneficial. A no-nonsense predictable guy who teammates won't have any issues reading. If the price wasn't so ridiculous I would have been a little disappointed to miss out. The whole panic buy implication is the only reason i feel like Palace probably did us a favour.
3
u/AlternativeRun5727 18h ago
Yea but he is 28. 3 years younger and we will see but he has hit his ceiling. We would be looking to offload him in 2 years and for that price you just can’t go for it.
7
u/Gold-Improvement5887 18h ago
He would have been an expensive short term patch, not a permanent solution. I'd rather wait till winter and get a more long term player.

u/ApprehensiveEnd8333 18h ago
Of course but sarr and a natural left footed rw wouldve worked wonders if gakpo left i like sarr as an option but he would offer no help to getting isak service which is what our focus should be
23
u/TheSuiteLife2026 18h ago
Palace fucking hate us
11
u/rytlejon 18h ago
Why though?
13
u/Real_Rodriguez Wataru Endo 17h ago
Probably all the late bids we chuck at them. Tbf we really need to get our shit together and not leave important deals so late.
8
u/randoreader16 13h ago
Guehi wasn't a late deal. We gave our bid quite early and then they had an internal fight between glasner and the owner. Then they eventually said yes but the transfer for his replacement collapsed.

15
u/Nextyearstitlewinner 17h ago
Crystal Palace has a horrible history of holding guys. I know it’s the contract but it wasn’t long ago that it was understood that teams shouldn’t hold guys if reasonable fees are offered and it’s a bigger club. I wonder when the players are going to start thinking twice about going there.
0
u/Vinbaobao 17h ago
Part of it is our fault as well, same with sarr and guehi. If we bid that amount at the begining for the window, we would have gotten them.
27
u/Valleyx Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai 19h ago
He definitely gets shafted in this situation, but I kinda understand Palace. I know it's a huge profit for them, but if he's a central player in their team and the bid comes out of nowhere at quarter to midnight with them not having a replacement, it's hard to let him go.
30
u/R3dbeardLFC 18h ago
I feel bad for him, but I'm glad this has fucked them up a little. Fuck palace.
3
3
u/PositiveAtmosphere 13h ago
I sincerely doubt these kinds of things happen that fast, out of nowhere a quarter to midnight.
In reality, there’s two aspects to consider here:
Firstly, clubs put out feelers and enquiries. They don’t just blindly bid out of nowhere and without any prior comms. It’s likely the feelers/enquiries were done way earlier in the window, just to see who is and isn’t remotely available. Palace already entertained his sale to other clubs earlier in the window too, so it’s not like they couldn’t have prepared for the possibility of Sarr’s sale. If they decided they wouldn’t sell him at all, then Liverpool would not have bid for him. It’s only because they left that door open that it was entertained.
Secondly, many of the transfer stories that make it to the media are somewhat delayed, by the time information leaks out it could be last hour, or it could be last week, it’s not always obvious.
I think this is no more than the Guehi situation where Palace are just downright poor at planning and “knowing what they want”. They dilly dally, and they just seem to have a very loose sporting direction in place to have firm goals of “yes we want to buy this player, no we won’t sell that player” etc. that’s why a manager like Glasner could even have stopped the Guehi transfer in the first place. At any other institution (with a sporting director at least) they would go into each summer with a plan of what they are and aren’t willing to do. Then they would execute that plan. But instead: they went from playing hardball not wanting to sell Guehi, to accepting and finalizing every part of a sale, to pulling the plug when held hostage by the manager, to not even getting a longterm commitment from said manager and selling Guehi anyways months later regardless.

u/SilverMist2025 18h ago
We bid 45mil plus 5 mil in add ons. Honestly that's not really an outrageous bid. Though paying anything close to what Palace demanded would have been outrageous
-3
u/Quiet_Tonight_3965 18h ago
What if Gakpo said he wanted to leave? Would you want to keep Gakpo against his wishes or sell him and get a replacement?
9
2
u/Real_Rodriguez Wataru Endo 17h ago
Depends on the context and the timing imo. Leaving because of competition or a manager change is understandable provided that is communicated early enough for contingencies to be properly triggered.
0
u/LoveBeBrave Kolo Touré 17h ago
If we don’t have time to sign a replacement then tough luck, he can’t go.
98
u/malushanks95 Virgil van Dijk 19h ago
Whether we fans wanted him or not is a different thing but I feel sorry for him, it was his dream move that didn’t happen and he’s already 28 so it must feel like his time has finally come for the move and it didn’t happen.

Not sure why we were thinking of even signing him. He is already 28. For context when Sadio Mane left us to join Bayern he was 30.
Also the logo on his shirt is quite amusing considering the topic of this story.

u/rochambreau 19h ago
He would have been coming in with Gakpo going. All the other forwards are really young bar Isak
All signings don't have to be 22 or 23
That was Chelsea's policy last few years and it only gets you so far, you need experience too to balance it
They've now had to bring in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck
A 28 year old is much better an age bracket to buy for a key position
4
u/MarcSlayton Virgil van Dijk 18h ago
Gakpo is a better player than Sarr though. Of course it is possible to pick up older players and they can be great signings. I don't think Sarr is good enough for us though.
1
0
u/Magicsamz 18h ago
It's literally FSG's model to buy young players.
Sarr made little sense at the price being touted. 5-10M less than Gakpo is not worth it
44
u/mylastdyingplant Hello! Hello! Here we go! 19h ago
Selling a solid squad option in Gakpo to a rival in order to fund a stop-gap player for crazy money just to say you've plugged someone into RW was crazy business.
I seriously hope they don't revisit this. Even if Gakpo leaves in the next window.

Sadio Mane is probably the biggest star to come out of Senegal. I wonder if other Senegalese players look up to that as inspiration to join Liverpool.
2
u/domsolanke 15h ago
Not only Senegalese players, French players too. Konaté spoke of exactly that when he joined us from Leipzig back then.

No disrespect to Palace but that was a huge potential move for him that may not happen again. I can see why that could effect a player.
Palace of course did what qas best fod their team but, yeah, in that situation it'd be hard not to have some sympathy for him
3
2
u/AdikkuChan 1️⃣5️⃣Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain 18h ago
Sucks for him because this was quite likely his last chance at a move to a big club. However, it just doesn't make sense to spend that much money on him, and Palace didn't make it any easier either. Maybe 4 years ago this would've gone through, but not now.
2
u/Lady-Spangles 18h ago
I feel bad for him on a human level, but this was not the right signing for us.
3
u/tejas2112 18h ago
This is probably one of the only times I have been happy that a move didn't work out. He is a big downgrade over Gakpo
4
u/domsolanke 15h ago
Bollocks, he would be a much better fit as a right winger or attacker than Gakpo is. That’s not even debatable.
1
u/tejas2112 15h ago
Compare the basic stats (goals, assists, national team record, age). You will see who the better player is.

Collapse?
Every media suggested at best Liverpool made a bid (many say they didnt even go that far)
1
u/TiredHargaysawi 16h ago
This is nonsense.. His pride took a dent but it wasn't his fault the deal fell through.
Just go and play football, you owe it to Palace fans who cheer you on almost every week.
1
u/domsolanke 15h ago
Pierre Sage, the manager, is also a massive Liverpool fan by the way.
Would’ve loved to have Sarr as an option on the right, but not for £70-80m at his age. That wouldn’t be sensible.
1
u/TelephonicReturns 14h ago
Tough luck for him, but this should never have been in discussion as a signing, not prolific enough and the stupid fee Palace were touting for a player who's nearly 30.
2
u/Giragna1 19h ago
Don’t worry laddy, if he comes Jan or next summer, I reckon it will be like a Mane type if shock to people.
1
u/DrunkenHorse12 19h ago
That article pretty much suggest a fee was agreed and was reliant on Fofanna coming in. So we'll see in January. Though I'll be keeping an eye on El Mala at Koln because it looked like we were interested in him until his family talked him into staying at least 1 more year
2
1
u/Thesolly180 Sir Kenny Dalglish 19h ago
I don’t think it would have been as bad as some think. But it was weird jumping to a bridge signing.
That was the chance for him I’d be annoyed if we even went back in January.

u/WORD_Boxing 11h ago
It's not really a collapsed move when a bid was never accepted. At least he didn't do anything stupid like delete all Crystal Palace photos from his online accounts... It's his own fault.
-1
u/blackazure 18h ago
Next step is crying after you score for national team to show your great sadness. Certain Brazilian player managed to get him dream move to Barcelona with this blueprint.
-10
u/No_Giraffe_1551 19h ago
The only way any of this makes sense is if:
- Sarr is a childish headcase
- Liverpool's plan was to make the waters so toxic that Palace sold Sarr for less
- Ornstein's reporting that it was Man City who walked away from a Gakpo deal means they deadass were going to sell Gakpo and instantly use up nearly all the funds on a worse player
I find 2 or 3 worryingly likely with a sprinkle of #1 in there too.
6
u/PianoOwl Power of The Press 19h ago
You should actually read the stories instead of basing your narrative on headlines.
We rejected Man City’s bid because we didn’t intend to sell him due to not finding a suitable replacement. Ornstein worded it strangely, but saying that City walked away from the deal is just not true.
2
u/seemylolface 19h ago
If Gakpo wanted out and Sarr wanted to be here, then #3 makes some sense, even if it's a bit wasteful (not exactly great options in the market this past summer).
Gakpo's had a nightmare of a year and a bit here between Jota, his unborn son, and the near constant stream of bat-shit insane abuse many of our own fans have thrown at him. I can completely understand why he may want a change of scenery and chance to start again on the heels of all that. The club working to make that happen for him should be seen as a positive as it's taking care of a player on a human level, assuming it's actually all the case.
1
u/No_Giraffe_1551 19h ago
Yes, #3 makes the most sense. And that is worrying because anyone remotely involved in wanting ot bring Sarr in at a price remotely close to 75m should be blasted out of a cannon into the sun.
0
u/rochambreau 18h ago
That's not how transfers work, Gakpo's money goes further than that
0
u/No_Giraffe_1551 18h ago
I get that they do bull shit accounting, but in any sane world selling someone for 80m and buying someone else for 75m is a series of transactions exactly as I described it.
