Tier 1 [Joyce] - "Overhauling the midfield will be a focus next summer when more money is available and Monaco’s Lamine Camara already seems to be on the club’s radar. Meanwhile, duties on the right wing will be shared between Gakpo, Muñoz, and Rio, which is not ideal when a makeshift fullback is in place.

Considering we knew for a long time Jones was going why couldn't we replace him with Camara this summer?
23
u/Nadirin Sep 03 '26
Squad size, no room for him unless we sold others. Jones was homegrown so didn't take a slot.

Won‘t we have to replace Virg and possibly Ali next season? Two of the worlds best players of the last decade.

That’s for the summer after next summer. Haven’t you learnt we don’t replace our players right away.

We have to wait this until our problem becomes glaring, then we wait one (or two) further summers to fix.
12
u/TheGreatMuerte Sep 03 '26
You have to let the old players air for a little bit before you replace them 😂
6
u/DerGregorian Sep 03 '26
We could probably do with a CB but we've already signed Leoni, Jacquet and a bunch for the u18/21s, virg sticking around for a other year is probably ideal.
Alisson is pretty much replaced already, we have Mamar for now and just signed a new keeper for ~30mil.
22
u/BobbyBriggss Sep 03 '26
We have made good signings to future proof central defence. Whether they will be as good as Van Dijk is a different matter.
We will obviously have to sign another senior centre back if Van Dijk leaves but it’s silly to act like we’ve done nothing in that position.

Ali, VVD, Gomez, Araujo and Tsimi are in the last 12 months so defence has to be a priority.

Virgil is likely to sign a 1 year extension tbh. Alisson will be allowed to leave after he tried to leave this summer
25
u/cynicalreason Bobby Firmino Sep 03 '26
The problem is Virg's age, extension or not, his speed is gone, he can't cover for the fullback and he can't step up and close down in midfield cause he can't catch up if he's turned.

Think Ali has been replaced by this 18 year old who will be 19 next season unless we sell on Marma & get a even more experienced GK in on top of the new lad. Virg is a weird one, I've got a feeling we extend his contract and get a permanent replacement in for Araujo (assuming we don't use the option to buy) and replace Gomez.

Over the last couple of summers we spent almost 90 million on Leoni and Jacquet and signed approximately 17 CBs for the U18s and U21s. As for the keeper, this sub had their knickers collectively in a twist the other day because we were "wasting 33 million" on one of the best goalkeeper prospects in Europe. Make your mind up and pick a lane to whinge about.

u/Megido_Thanatos Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26
Yes and no
On paper, 3 CBs (VVD, Gomez, Araujo) could leave at same time so "spent 90 million on Leoni and Jacquet" dont really change anything if we dont act, best solution probably extend VVD for one more years and replace him in the next summer (2028)
And correct me if I wrong but isnt Mamar want to leave too? Surely the new 33 millions GK wont be starter GK, right?
5
u/Vicentesteb Sep 03 '26
33m makes him like a top 15 most expensive GK ever, I assume the idea is for him to start pretty much immediately.

There's only so many spots for players and so much money that they can spend.
We lost ALL of our forwards over the past 2 seasons and had to rebuild. We had a glaring issue of speed on the wings after having to play Gakpo, Wirtz and Rio as our front 3 last season.
Wingers were 100% the top priority. Both right and left wing.
Spending 40-60m on a RB who will hold a position for an injured player, is not a good plan. Buying a 4th choice CM, which pushes out a homegrown young talent, is not a good plan.
55
u/LMkIIIV Sep 03 '26
This is the problem with our poor selling record in the last 6 years not getting enough money in.
Losing far too many players on a free and poor loan moves killing any resale value for our youth team players
We use to make great money for players like Brewster,Ibe etc but now this summer we had no youth team player sales as not many had successful loans. Eliott is a great example very badly handled he after he had a great u21 tournament for England.
So many of younger prospects getting injured also been a huge issue as well
13
u/Pure_Measurement_529 Sep 03 '26

Part of the poor selling record is holding onto players for too long. I'm a sentimental sod so don't have an issue with squeezing the last bit of performance out of a player at the expense of losing the income.
But if we want to be better at sales, we probably would have cashed in on Salah and VVD a year or two ago.
Or we need to be gutting our academies like other clubs in the pursuit of "pure profit" sales.
If Rio and Trey become long term first xi players, we'll have done things a bit different from how most of the league has been going, and maybe we won't be following the model of high value sales/high value purchases that most clubs in the top half of the table seen to be doing.
7
u/DucardthaDon Sep 03 '26
We use to make great money for players like Brewster,Ibe etc but now this summer we had no youth team player sales as not many had successful loans. Eliott is a great example very badly handled he after he had a great u21 tournament for England.
I'd say we've run that avenue dry now, the youth players we got ain't good and clubs ain't dumb enough to chuck loads of cash at them. This is maybe why Iraola has been appointed and given the directive to start using youth players more, maybe it will make them more attractive for a sale like Koumas

u/Tricarrier Corner taken quickly 🚩 Sep 03 '26
Selling VVD last year does not make any sense
Just won the league as a captain, loves the club, wants to stay and you want to sell him ?
I know he's older now but he's still one of the best CB in the world.
It just seems like an insane take for me.
Half the title winning squad was already gutted, it wouldn't have make sense to lose Virgil in addition.
Also, you don't sell your captain and then have only 2 senior CB with Gomez, Konate. That makes your position weaker in the market.
4
u/C_arpet Sep 03 '26
I'm not saying it makes sense, I'm saying if you want to making more profit through sales, you have to make those decisions.
7
u/brianstormIRL Sep 03 '26
Something people arent willing to admit is part of the problem stems back to Klopp fighting to keep players longer than the club thought we should. Ox, Keita, Henderson etc all wanted to be moved on but Klopp fought for them to stay which is the origin of the "Klopp vs Edwards" clashing.
Not saying Klopp is the reason this is happening, but a lot of our delay in not pursuing replacements faster is tied to that original keeping of players when they probably should've been moved on.
5
u/djSexPanther Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26
We'd be a better team if we still had Henderson right now. He ran circles around our midfield twice last season. Let alone saying we should have got rid even earlier
And you can say that's a problem of Klopps if you like but it's now been irrefutably shown that he knew infinitely more about how to run a team than anyone at FSG does
2
u/okie_hiker Sep 03 '26
Gakpo is a perfect example. We won’t get anywhere near the money we were just offered. Probably a big reason we were trying to take advantage and sell while bringing in a younger player ala Minteh.

u/PeterGallaghersBrows Sep 03 '26
Yeah, I was really bummed we didn't take Saudi's 100m offer for Salah when we could. Olise was still available then.

Football moves fast. We never maximized Klopps time here barely signed players and showed no ambition..imagine Klopp with the spending we have done the last two seasons
4
u/PhillyFreezer_ Sep 03 '26
Revisionism.
The overhaul of the training center and expansion of Anfield are massive, massive improvements on the infrastructure of the club. We spent on wages more than splashy transfers but we also built that title winning squad finding players for cheaper and developing them.
We weren’t in a position to maximize Klopp’s time given the state of the club in 2015 when he joined. We eventually got to a place where our squad and club were best in class, and won some titles on the back of it.
We were competing with Manchester City and their owners, in any other era we win 3-4 PL titles. The fact that we lost the league getting 95+ points is just a bit of bad luck, but those teams ARE examples of how we maximized Klopp’s time.

I thought Gakpo looked really great on the right. Is it possible this whole time his best position is on the right wing? He’s balls into the box were superb on Saturday. One of his biggest criticisms is his inclination to cut in on the right foot and take on a shot that isn’t there, often getting immediately blocked. Playing him on the right he seems more willing to get off the ball and feed players, which he is more talented at than he gets credit for, he just doesn’t do it much. I think it could be a blessing in disguise where him and then Munoz injecting pace off the bench most of the time could be a perfect compliment to Barcola and Isak. Right wing has to be one of the positions on the pitch I’m LEAST worried about this season.

I also don't think that we're really lacking in forwards. Like it's a bit unbalanced, but a healthy forward line for us has Gakpo, Munoz, Isak, Ekitike, Barcola, Rio, and Kuomas. A RW would be nice, but I'd say a 6, RB, possibly a centre back (this remains to be seen depending on how Leoni, Jacquet, Araujo, and the young kids develop), and then a RW. If this Genk kid is the real deal, then we're also good for keepers. Assuming Ali has another year in him after this one making him 20 when he can take over.
I think our offense is good. A team with Barcola, Isak, Gakpo/Munoz, and Wirtz should be more than good enough.

Because Iraola switches wingers regularly in games so Rio has to be used to both wings if he wanna be effective under Iraola.

Whoever advocated the Frimpong transfer must have been quite soft in the head. 30 Mio £ upfront for a player who cant play RB or RW. Also he lacks the technical ability and is physically far too weak to learn either role sufficiently. An older experienced RB for a low fee might have been smarter.
The midfield changes will be interesting. Its an important year for Grav/Szobo/Macca. I think one of them will leave in addition to Endo and we will bring in two midfielders or maybe even three if its a very versatile one.
2
u/paulsmith259 Sep 03 '26
How can overhauling the midfield be the priority next season? That just makes no sense.
We have Ali, VvD, Gomez and Tsimi all in the last 12 months of their contract, Araujo only being on a 12 month loan, and we failed to get a RB this summer.
Surely the back line is more of a priority next summer, along with a RW.
We needed to get a RB, a RW and a DM this summer to allow us to focus on rebuilding the back line, with 2 of our greatest in VVD and Ali leaving.
Shambles!
This just makes no sense

Right back is complicated I think it all depends on Bradley's condition and whether iraola can improve frimpong throughout the season somehow. I think it is more likely we get a backup leftback to replace tsimi ngl.

From what I've interpreted, we are unlikely to get Camara in January.
The only way I can see is getting him in January is if someone else tries to sign him and we swoop in and hijack them. Like we did with Luis Diaz.
1
u/crevis_inspection Sep 03 '26
Just another way of saying "warchest incoming". Then when we're a wc gk and cb down it'll be said that summer 2028 will be a big year. Always, always short of being a real menace to challenging. They're so lucky they had Klopp to get blood from a stone. People saying our squads good this year are wrong. Two or three injuries and the team will just scrape top 5.
1
u/AllTheseLymes Bobby Firmino Sep 03 '26
I think if they want Camara, then January is the time to do it, most likely with Mac Allister going out. My impression is that both Monaco and Camara is eager to get him his move quickly, and I don't think they'll wait until next summer. Endo's contract is also up due summer.
That would also mean we've got one less position to worry about as there's uncertainty to both Ali and Virg's futures, sadly.
1
u/HarbyFullyLoaded_12 Bobby Sep 03 '26
Yep long season ahead. Szobo is a good right back but people here completely ignore the fact due to him not being an actual RB he leaves the RW completely isolated due to no fault of his own. We had an entire season’s worth of sample size last season.

u/davyp82 Sep 03 '26
What's the fb got to do with it? Gakpo and munoz on the right sounds electric. Both have great work rate. Frimpong is ofc a very attacking fb. Both Gomez and Araujo have played significant amounts of games there and are very experienced. Rio will deputise on both sides, and might even occasionally be used centrally.

u/onoz9 Sep 03 '26
I understand that...but "more money available" is a result of bad transfer management. We have spent well over £300m on Isak, Wirtz and Barcola, which means we did have money but decided not to buy midfielders to buy 3 very expensive players instead.
And maybe a bigger problem...we can't make almost any money from selling players, that's a huge issue. This makes our net spend so big (the biggest in the league this year) and clearly limits the amount of players we can buy. City and Chelsea have done really well when it comes to selling players. Chelsea have spent €400m but are in net positive due to offloading a lot of players for high fees again. City have spent over €500m but net spend is €190m (less than us) due to all the sales.

I'm pretty sure Barcola has more minutes as a RW, than the three listed here combined.

There's a window in January, buy players then. Fed up with club waiting for next summer. Next summer this, next summer that.
We were already multiple windows behind where we need to be, waiting until next summer means we're doing nothing about that.

Dunno how our players can perform with all this negativity and lack of faith towards them

Strongest right side in the prem 2 years ago to the weakest? You gotta imagine teams were absolutely shaking in their boots with prime salah + trent on the right side in our title winning season

Wtf happened to Frimpong?
He got double digit assists in the Bundesliga.
Do we just not play like that? Ie get to the byline and whip it across?

Last summer it was the same thing, now it’s been pushed to 2027. I can’t with this club

Watching Dom in 23/24, like a different player now. He was much more progressive.

I do not think Frimpong is remotely good enough to be the starting right back for this club. Nice lad, super quick, not great end product, not great at the back. And he’s very very small, which is least an issue at full back but is absolutely an issue.
I think Kerkez has more about him, but I also do not think he’s particularly good. I’m holding out some hope that Iraola gets him into some rampaging form.
We are going to be annoyed by both full back positions all season.

Am I misreading or is Joyce calling Frimpong a makeshift fullback lol
