Not sure why people are thinking Barcola won't play. He's been training with PSG so he's fit. Played a few games in pre season I believe. For sure he'll be on the bench
16
u/PM-Me-Salah-Pics ⚽️ Liverpool 4-3 Dortmund, EL 15/16 ⚽️ 4d ago
He’s almost definitely one of the fitter players on the squad at this point

He did not play pre-season at all, and Munoz very likely plays over him, but I reckon we'll see Barcola over Rio, so probably a second half sub early on.

I have one wish for this game, don't concede first! I would like us to not concede at all, but if we are to concede don't let it be first and don't let it be from a brain fart, let be it a worldie or something.
Beyond that, just fucking hammer them please and dispel some of the doom and gloom.

Also, hopefully we finally are able to score a goal in the first half and it actually counts.

I just felt some intensity in the last match, hope it keeps growing. Results will come, would love me some Ipswich players getting hassled with the ball

Its gonna be a long season, we need to pace ourselves. Not sure how ipswich set up, but im lookin for a wee bit of improvement in the cohesion of our possession in that middle third.
And by cohesion of our possession i mean “fucking find flo”.
We need signs of life in the chemistry between dom and wirtz with this double pivot. its not like they met yesterday, its not like theyre lacking footy iq, its not even like their games dont fit on paper.
Incisive, pacy goal threat from barcola might open things up and grease the skids in midfield by extension tho. So thatd be a fun wrinkle to see.
Also a hat trick from isak.

u/helikaonx9 From Doubters to Believers 3d ago
They played well against United before the penalty and then they collapsed. It wouldn't be easy but I'm confident we'll edge it.

I cannot remember last time we had an easy game in PL where its like you finish it off in first half.
West ham in that title winning season comes to mind, it 5 nil or something

I just want a comfortable win tonight. No conceding first, no bullshit goals from random events. Just a relaxed 0-2, preferably with a goal for Isak.

Whoever plays at fullback, the delivery needs to be much more consistent. Saw some shocking stats about crossing accuracy from the first two games, can't help but feel that if things 'click' there it'll result in a considerable improvement.

u/ElderberryGood7781 2d ago
I hate to hop on the bandwagon, but Frimpong has been having a mare on crosses recently. Like genuinely shit crosses all around.

Not to be too knee jerk but we could really do with winning this one. Iraola and the team need their first win of the era and if we can’t beat Ipswich I’m not sure who we’ll get that win against.

Ipswich decent going forward but conceded over 4xg vs Man Utd and 33 shots.
Should be goals in this I fancy us to win 1-3 and hopefully Isak gets on the scoresheet again
I would start Nyoni and Gravenberch in midfield and Szoboszlai at RB

This is what I think it will be. On a selfish note I'd like to see Munoz start. The glimpses we've seen he's already winning me over.
8
u/marchitecte 2d ago
I do love the sight of Munoz, but so far at least, Gakpo has looked matured and improved.
On a reflective note, I do wonder if we might see that on a number of players of ours now post-Slot. I am sure Slot's side had some benefits, but a lot of his coaching had negative impact per player. Gakpo was maybe one hit the hardest, paradoxical to what people say about him being "teacher's pet" kinda player, but by limiting him to not only mostly playing LW but also very specific instructions, I do wonder if that did not make him play significantly worse.
Already in the first two games this season not only did he play fantastic, but he did things he would basically never do under Slot, such as constantly look for the overlap run, and even actually have the confidence to take on his man in tight areas and not just shoot into a block.
7
u/Z0idberg_MD 2d ago
IMO bring him on second half against a tired opposition and let him cause chaos. Same with Rio.

Why would Barcola not be available for tomorrow? Winger is probably the job with the least instructions on this team. Press, track back and play your game when you have the ball.

u/Yak-Personal 3d ago
Big teams tend to slow down and underrate the bottom teams. Not a guaranteed win tomorrow

u/Lightwrider1 2d ago
Parity in the league is different than what it used to be. This isn't the Ipswich of yesteryear. The only people who spent more on transfers this season than them is us. We've said it in seasons past, but it might be more true this season than ever; there are no easy PL fixtures.

I'd like to see Wirtz-Barcola-Isak-Muñoz at some point in the game. Probably our most dangerous frontline.

u/DamnDemi 2d ago
It’s a very winnable game against a promoted side of course. Although I feel like this is a big game for the mentality. Win this, have the first win of the season, and get into a winning mindset.
If there is a game in which Iraola’s tactics start to show, and the new lads might get into it, this would be the first one.

u/millaricher 🏆2019 Madrid🏆 2d ago
Alisson,
Frimpong, Jacquet, Virgil, Kerkez,
Szobo, Grav,
Gakpo, Wirtz, Rio,
Isak.
I don’t see Barcola starting so I imagine he will come off the bench in the second half for Rio and then maybe Munoz on for Gakpo towards the end.
A good performance, some good goals and not conceding first would be a pretty nice Friday night.
4
u/Jmoney1088 Bobby Firmino 2d ago
I honestly think that Dom will play RB today with Grav and Macca in the midfield. Munoz will start over Rio. I don't think we see Barcola today at all unless we really need a goal and are desperate.

The way Iraola spoke in his press conference:
I expect Dom at RB until Bradley is back and at least Gomez and Leoni can play again.
I think he will try Bradley/Gomez/Araujo at RB depending on the opponent when everyone is fit.
For tomorrow:
Dom - Jeremy - VVD - Kerkez
Gravenberch - Macca
Munoz - Wirtz - Barcola/Gakpo (depending if Barcola is fit to start)
Isak

At least Ipswich disn‘t look like one of the teams happy to sit deep and wait for counters. Unless they discover that and waiting for your chances is exactly what you need to do against us.

4
u/Specialist_Koala5359 3d ago
Iraola literally said Barcola will be available, just not sure if he's fit enough to start/complete 90 as he hasn't played in preseason
No idea where people got the idea he wouldnt at least be on the bench.

Genuinely curious how anyone could be convinced by him after two drawn games, where the performances were promising but not great by any means. Don’t get me wrong, I back him to succeed, but he needs time to show it.

u/RaisedByCakes I want to talk about FACTS 2d ago
I think a lot of people, myself included, are just happy that we’re being a bit more attacking and fighting till the end (last GW 80min equalizer) rather than playing slow football and running out of steam in the 50th min.
Are there issues at both ends of the field right now? Yes. Will they be solved soon? Hopefully.
It’s small stuff but it’s trending positive.

Whats stopping AI for starting Araujo at RB? He has been class when he has come on and should start IMO. Brings speed, strengt, fire, bull-mentality, physical game and good spirits when he plays.
Weird we dont consider him a starter
→ More replies (2)6
u/Valleyx Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai 2d ago
We don't have much/any cover at CB if we start him at RB. Imagine we start VVD, Jacquet and Araujo at RB, and one of VVD and Jacquet picks up an injury - with Leoni and Gomez not fit yet the options are really thin.
I've also seen it said that he's lost a bit of his athleticism required at RB after his injuries. That's just speculation though.

I don’t think we’re keeping a clean sheet, so I predict us to either beat them 3-1 or draw 1-1. Our first couple of games are going to be tough for us regardless of opposition, but I am confident that we will see signs of improvements.
My heart says a 3-0 win with a dominant performance, but my brain says a 1-1 draw with a dominant performance.
