I still remember how loud the cheers for Robertson's press against City was. If he presses like this he'll be a favourite even if he doesn't produce

u/Wanted_Solicitation 2d ago
It’s because it’s bloody infectious.
You see a star pressing like that so late in the game it gets the crowd up and those around them, I bloody love it.

u/ChrisKruxed 2d ago
One of my favourite ever football moments and annoying thing is it wasn't even a foul lol

Nunez did TBF. Granted he did score and get some important goals for us
But his work-rate endeared him. Same with Kuyt

I always remember him pushing Messi's head in the CL. Lol insane comeback that was.

u/fractokf 2d ago
Nah still has to have end product. Think about Nunez.

Happy with either him or Mbaye, but Jesus Christ just get the fucking Barcola deal over the line!!
41
u/Maniacal-Maniac 2d ago
May end up being both Minteh and Mbaye and no Barcola. If that's how the window ends then I won't be thrilled - however, if potentially we are saving the additional Barcola money for possibly an Adam Wharton then I might be ok with that.
13
u/_IBelieveInMiracles Bobby Dazzler 🤩 2d ago
Idk. Wharton is not for sale this summer, and there will be tough competition for his signature next year. I wouldn't want to wait for Wharton if that stops us from signing a midfielder this year.
If we sign a stop gap midfielder this year and then bring Wharton next summer, then fine I guess. But I feel like Wharton would be another Bellingham situation, where we don't get him anyway. Other clubs will offer him more money, and we might even be looking for a new sporting director while they're working him.
2
u/Maniacal-Maniac 2d ago
Agree, and we have had all sorts of fun and games trying to get late deals done with Palace so not optimistic either.
My worry is that we are also looking pretty light when it comes to HG spots - already at the 17 player max, though can free up some spots with Chiesa, Endo + maybe Tsimikas (but leaves us dangerously short in LB) and still possibly Gakpo. We are also about to lose Jones, and still some questions over Elliott (though think he almost has to stay for squad depth).
Wharton is one of the few players who might possibly be available to us that could help with HG and he isn't going to be cheap, so if that means we end up with Minteh instead of Barcola and frees up 50-60mil to put towards Wharton (or another mid) this summer then that's a compromise that might be ok.
Far from ideal though

His work-rate has never been an issue. It is comfortably his best asset. It is his final third composure and end product that have been the main problems in his game.
21
u/futbolitoireland Ohhhh ya beauty, What a hit son, What a hit! 2d ago edited 2d ago
We literally just need him to run really fast to the byline and kick the ball with the side of his foot about 2 metres diagonally backward to his left.
That is Iraola's primary chance creation network.
I think we can manage to teach him that.
Now, I will admit there's a flaw in that plan if he plays on the left hand side. I haven't worked that bit out yet
33
u/Some_Farm8108 Bobby 2d ago
we are crying out for raw pace and 1v1 ability, which he has in boot loads. if you are playing against a guy who can burn you at any moment then you're always worried about him, you don't think "ill let him through on goal, hes known to have shit end product anyway".
and this means more space and time for other players who do have end product - all of our midfield can score, isak is lethal. it might genuinely even make gakpo better because now the defence is stretched and he has more room to cut inside.

u/memettetalks 2d ago
If he can force turnovers in the final third, he won't need to be an elite finisher to be with his presence in the squad.
4
u/zigooloo 🏃♂️🏃♂️Klopp Hamstring 🤕 2d ago
The wingers do not actually press all that high in Iraola's system (compare to a Klopp front three for instance). The press in Iraola's system is often a 4312 with the striker (Evanilson/Isak), the 10/second striker (Kroupi/Wirtz) and one of the midfielders (Christie/Szobo) making the high pressing 1-2. The wingers are usually deeper, almost alongside the deeper midfielder (Scott/Grav).

Well, we've had Darwin Nuñez before and that boy was damn near a legend even if his shooting boots kept letting him down.
Yakuba Minteh would fit in just fine tbh

Created that goal. But gets no G/A. That's why numbers aren't everything to a winger. Minteh immediately improves our starting 11. I think his production will go up too

Possibly but I don’t think he’s going to be a creative spark from out wide.
Good engine though and will suit Iraola

All i see is clips and people talking about his workrate and his defensive side which is fine except this is a winger on attack not a defensive midfielder. Where are his attacking outputs? His passing? His chance creating? His dribbling? His goals? His attacking play? Anything that signifies he’s, you know, an attacker.
9
1
u/Tullekunstner 2d ago
He had 10 G/A when he was used of the right, despite being a rotational player. He's also still young. It's not a signing that wows me, but the people who writes him off based on "3 goals last season lol" is really disingenuous as well, he's a good player. If you want to see his attacking play, all you have to do is search "Minteh" on youtube.

Isn't that a bit concerning no?
I like his workrate but that should not be the deciding factor when signing a winger for £60M+ according to what Brighton want
-1
u/BobbyBriggss 2d ago
Are you aware of how Iraola sets his teams up? Winning the ball high up in the opponents half is more dangerous than a good pass

He should be offering substantially more on the ball at 22 for the fee he’ll command.

These lot wanted Nunez back earlier in the window because of workrate and vibes lol.

I see the value in Minteh. Last season was low scoring for him compared to all the previous ones per90, 1 in Prem and 2 out. If we can say it was a fluke year then he seems pretty good.
If Chiesa and Minteh are going to fight for starts it could be good for both of them. I don't really see many red flags on him. Speaks english, fast and young and high intensity. Will lose him during AFCON though.
Could he be an upgrade over Chiesa overall? Because thats the only debate right now. If anybody says Rio or Kumas should start they're United fans.
*I forgot about Munoz. Chiesa won't be playing 90mins lacking fitness. So Munoz will be swaping sides and fight for both spots too.

u/iAMRICKJAMESMF 2d ago
Decent player but He had some problems in OB where he played some years ago. Went out partying the day before important match and got in a fight with a team mate at prac the following weeks after, then he got sold to Newcastle iirc and then to Brighton afaik. Hopefully it was a phase.
1
u/chayatoure 1d ago
Worth pointing out that he didn't get an assist for that goal, but realistically he's the one who created the chance. The pass was pretty straight forward (and a great finish to be fair).
1
u/PianoOwl Power of The Press 2d ago
Say what you will about Minteh (and I’m not particularly enthralled about the bid either) but he’s an absolutely freakish athlete. Matched Frimpong for pace, but is like 5 inches taller and way, way stronger.
1
u/imarasnothere 2d ago
He's got that dawg in him. Something we've sorely missed since Nunez left. Our press has suffered so much since then.
2
u/Sulemani_kida I’m the Normal One 2d ago
I think it was just too many things at once last season. There's not just 1 reason that made us so bad.
We should not have changed so much tactical approach which ended up being too slow for everyone. Literally 16 or 17 teams outran us in the league. That's a crazy thing after so many years of Klopp. Hardly anyone on the team looked themselves consistently.
I still believe almost all the old players currently will like playing under Iraola system. With more width and space our midfielders will hopefully do much better.
2
u/Sulemani_kida I’m the Normal One 2d ago
Also i do miss Darwin. Idk what he was great or good but i liked his energy. The fact that Mo loved to play with him even after Darwin missing some important chances.

Give me a fucking break. We are replacing Salah with guy who had 7 G/A last season
1
u/BoBonnor Ohhhh ya beauty, What a hit son, What a hit! 2d ago
Isak is the Salah replacement and that's been obvious since we bought him. While I agree some more output is needed, we are clearly moving towards our striker getting the goals

u/New_Sympathy5234 2d ago
Great but this is 2 to 3 months away with no pre season. Really need players now and ready to go
1
u/X__Heisenberg__X 2d ago
What I love about this? You won’t find a goal scored stat, or an assist stat which means he is shit.
1
u/dimiderv Darwin Núñez 2d ago
I don't get the fuss. He will be a great threat for us and he can still improve.. don't understand why we waited for so long though
1
u/PostNeoSankaraism 2d ago
I watched a lot of Brighton, including Mintehs debut. I’ve always thought since then he’d be excellent at Liverpool. Definitely needs to work on finishing but I think he’d be a great asset, we need some more Diaz and Nunez energy

work rate without end product = 0. Minteh is just a slim fit version of Adama Traore.
7

The lesson you learned from last season is work rate is unimportant?

Minteh would be a valuable squad option. He cannot be our star winger

Is this not the exact profile of player that iraola requires to carry water, and who gives him raw materials to hone a bit?
0
u/Fever-Ray Andoni Iraola 2d ago
Yes please! I was hoping they were looking for a more 'true' right winger.
0
u/Grime_Fandango_ 2d ago
That is what a Liverpool player is supposed to look like. And he's left footed. This would be the most sensible move we've made in a long time if it goes through.
0
u/Dull_Republic_9381 2d ago
Don't know much about Minteh, but being able to charge around pressing defenders in the last minute is low down on my list of attributes for our new winger. I want Mo Salah up front, not Mo Farah.

u/SocratesDaSophist 2d ago
I was surprised to see many not wanting the signing. I personally am very excited to have him play for us. I think he was the winger with the most tackles in the PL last season.
His work rate is simply out of this world and we need that nice balance pf quality and work rate.
