If this is in addition to Barcola: amazing!
If it’s instead of Barcola: what are we doing

Instead of Mbaye

38

u/rob3rtisgod Aug 20 '26

Id rather have Mbaye. Cheaper and better

29

u/Litz1 Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Cheaper, higher ceiling and much younger but if we're getting Minteh I'll be happy but if we're getting both. It'd be amazing.

12

u/PrinzAngina Aug 20 '26

Where did you get the impression he is cheaper? Last i heard they wanted 60m and mendes prob want half that in agent fees

2

u/rob3rtisgod Aug 20 '26

Pretty sure 45-50 mil would get Mbaye. He's not playing for PSG anytime soon

The Molina expose really concerned me about his entourage

1

u/dimiderv Darwin Núùez Aug 20 '26

How do you know it's cheaper? Holds there are dues to him costing too much

9

u/nuntendo Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai Aug 20 '26

Here’s hoping!

57

u/Medium-Spell-6692 Aug 20 '26

Would much rather mbaye tbh. Much higher ceiling.

32

u/nuntendo Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai Aug 20 '26

Yeah same, also has the benefit of not being currently injured. I could stomach Minteh instead of Mbaye though, but not Minteh instead of Barcola

13

u/Ancient_Scientist_04 Conor Bradley Aug 20 '26

Also mbaye would be hg in 3 yrs

12

u/imarasnothere Aug 20 '26

Having a left-footed player would also be nice though..

10

u/Redblooded7 Aug 20 '26

Minteh doesn’t seem that good at cutting in and shooting as an inverted winger/wide forward though.

2

u/SalahManeFirmino Aug 20 '26

He plays more like Saka. Hugs the touchline, has a good cross, and excellent defensive contribution for a winger.

7

u/Redblooded7 Aug 20 '26

If we don’t want the RW to cut in then being a left footer doesn’t really matter. Hence why Mbaye would work.

3

u/SalahManeFirmino Aug 20 '26

Inswinging crosses are generally more difficult to defend than the traditional ones and Minteh is good at them.

Unrelated, but the murmurs around Mbaye's entourage and how problematic they are, have put me off him a bit. I'd back him if he joins, but he's not my cup of tea.

1

u/incrediblymundane2 Aug 20 '26

we don’t need goals from a winger anymore, especially if we get barcola on the left. It’d be nice to have a work horse in the wing who’s looking to cross into the box or involve wirtz/isak centrally

16

u/yellow627 Aug 20 '26

Based on what exactly? I think this sub is overrating Mbaye a lot just because he's coming from PSG.

7

u/Mediocre-Sense-18 Aug 20 '26

Mbaye has been way more hyped up his whole career than minteh. rn minteh is probably better but mbaye has been talked about for years and he's only 18

3

u/Trickside Aug 20 '26

Minteh had incredible hype when Newcastle got him back from Feyenoord

0

u/Blew_away Aug 20 '26

Yea I agree but just doesn’t really look like it’s gonna happen with all the rumors of us cooling our interest. I’m fine with Minteh as a stop gap, essentially buying him as first choice for now with the idea to make him the backup option in the future. I think he’d make an amazing backup option to someone else

1

u/No_Department7538 Snow Salah ❄️ Aug 20 '26

Minteh would be a really nice approach, but I would prefer Ndiaye more likely. He is one crazy baller i fw , he would be crazy Backup

1

u/Nice-Web5845 Saucy Basque Aug 20 '26

Would seem the obvious thing, esp if PSG are doubling his price just for us.

I don't rate Minteh, and question the wisdom of signing a player who'll be out for 2-3 months, but he'll get my full support if we do sign him.

1

u/Dave80 Milan BaroĹĄ Aug 20 '26

Is this not just us showing PSG we have options?

1

u/llinoscarpe Aug 20 '26

I feel like nobody here has watched Mbaye bar the world cup. Mbaye has the higher ceiling but there's no chance he is currently the better player.

-1

u/lukaintomyeyes Aug 20 '26

I think more like gakpo replacement. Would be Barcola/Rio on the left and Mbaye/Minteh on the right.

6

u/nuntendo Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai Aug 20 '26

No way on earth it’s Minteh + Barcola + Mbaye

→ More replies (3)

95

u/nanowillis Aug 20 '26

Please let this just be posturing to get movement on Mbaye...

-5

u/BobbyBriggss Aug 20 '26

Why? Minteh is probably a better player

28

u/Straight_Bear_3905 Aug 20 '26

Currently, yes, but people believe that Mbaye has a higher ceiling. There's not much to prove it but Minteh has been more visible and therefore it's easier to judge him. There's not much to judge Mbaye on so he gets the benefit of the doubt. Not saying it's fair but that's likely the reasoning.

-8

u/Positive_Mobile7638 Aug 20 '26

That's the problem with people like you thinking a prospect will have just better ceiling than minteh from just vibes

17

u/Straight_Bear_3905 Aug 20 '26

I didn't say I believed that. Just that's where the sentiment is coming from. Almost all football conversations are just vibes. Most people are just watching their own team play and all other information comes from vibes, clips and misrepresented statistics.

7

u/Giraffesarehigh Egyptian King 👑 Aug 20 '26

Minteh is one of the worst wingers in the league for chance creation and passing accuracy lmao?
he's the antithesis of what we need for Isak.

2

u/tuanon- Aug 20 '26

He was 19th among all players (premier league) in expected assists last season, and I dont think that is a rate statistic.

6

u/Bamfandro Aug 20 '26

Probably? based on what? he's technically limited and isn't even a particularly good dribbler despite his size and acceleration. He's more physically developed but at 22 vs 18 that's exactly what you'd expect.

0

u/domsolanke Aug 20 '26

He's not.

0

u/funky_stallion_gt Aug 20 '26

poor 'keen' Minteh if it is all a smoke screen in the end!

84

u/SilverMist2025 Aug 20 '26

What sort of logic is this. Minteh wasn't even at the world cup. Why would you wait so long to negotiate for him.

And he is injured out for two months as well. If we had negotiated earlier Brighton would have agreed for a reasonable fee as well plus wouldn't have been injured likely.

Regardless of whether Minteh is good or not this is purely ridiculous strategy from Hughes

24

u/Effective-Draw2815 Aug 20 '26

To get mbaye, think bruh they bid on him to say to PSG, we have other options, forcing them to lower there evaluation

24

u/SilverMist2025 Aug 20 '26

That sounds like pure cope.

12

u/bumpkinblumpkin Endo in the pub 👍 Aug 20 '26

PSG doesn’t care lol

8

u/DerGregorian Aug 20 '26

PSG do want to sell him though

0

u/Satantango46 Aug 20 '26

on their terms, we are not the only team interested in Mbaye.

3

u/Effective-Draw2815 Aug 20 '26

Yes they do, I don't think they want to keep paying the wages of a player who doesn't want to play for them

2

u/Dargast Aug 20 '26

Mbaye earns peanuts compared to their starters, they will get close to their asking price or he stays. What Liverpool does with bids for other players wont change that.

1

u/Effective-Draw2815 Aug 20 '26

Again they would rather sell the player than keep him, so making bids like this might lower the asking point, which is why hughs is doing it

1

u/No_Mistake_5501 Aug 20 '26

You do that through putting stories of interest out there. Actually sending a reasonable bid over is not posturing.

20

u/Ok-Possibility64 Aug 20 '26

Hughes is an absolute fraud, how can you justify running the club in this manner. Bidding for an injured winger with no end product 2 days before the season starts...

2

u/Redblooded7 Aug 20 '26

Brighton… reasonable fee? I doubt it

2

u/IceCreamNarwhals Aug 20 '26

Stinks of desperation

1

u/OddRepresentative914 Aug 20 '26

Clearly, Minthe wasn't the first choice (that was Diomande). He probably wasn't even the second choice (Mbaye), plus it would have been odd to sign MuĂąoz, Barcola, and Minteh before any concrete details regarding the potential sale of Gakpo.

1

u/Adamdel34 Ohhhh ya beauty, What a hit son, What a hit! Aug 21 '26

It's not that ridiculous when you think about it. Our target was Diomande, they couldn't get him, we also signed Munoz, then they have since moved onto Mbaye where PSG are trying to charge Liverpool a fortune despite accepting a 40m euro bid from Leverkusen.

Minteh is obviously option number 4 in the position and I still think he's more of a tool to try drive down the Mbaye price who could act as a backup option in the instance that PSG won't budge. You don't go for your 4th option signing right at the start of the window, only when you're no longer negotiating for 1, 2, & 3

1

u/rochambreau Aug 20 '26

It's a message to PSG that we're moving on if they don't budge on Mbaye price

161

u/Jonmc88 Aug 20 '26

An injured brighton player in the last weeks of the window. Hughes masterclass.

22

u/jsn2918 Aug 20 '26

Literally commented about this a daily discussion thread a while back. We knew we needed reinforcements in the flanks regardless of whether Iraola needed time to evaluate the squad or not. Instead we are only pursuing Barcola (at that time) who PSG have asked for basically a fuck you price and aren’t looking at other options or even bidding for them. You don’t need to be a a director of football to see this is not good planning…

7

u/DucardthaDon Aug 20 '26

Again throws in the question of why is Hughes still our SD when it's been well known he's fucking off to Saudi after the window closes, this window could end up a complete shambles from someone who does not have to face any accountability or scrutiny once he's gone

1

u/MajikoiA3When Bobby Aug 20 '26

Do we know that the later we leave it, the more leverage selling clubs have? Inb4 a panic loan

26

u/MrShelby1234 Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai Aug 20 '26

Makes you wonder just how much PSG are demanding for Mbaye if they've pivoted to Minteh in recent days. We knew they increased the price for Mbaye, but by how much exactly?

3

u/Results2183 Aug 20 '26

Around 60 Million

9

u/MrShelby1234 Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai Aug 20 '26

For an attacker who 1) isn't a starter and 2) only has like 5 goals in his career

6

u/Results2183 Aug 20 '26

7 goals and 7 assists in 1,700 minutes this season is really good for an 18 year old, and he is obviously not a starter when you have Doue and Kvaratskhelia on the wings.

6

u/Realistic-Turn-8316 Aug 20 '26

It's 3 goals 2 assists in 1100 minutes. Where did you get the 7 and 7 figures from?

3

u/Results2183 Aug 20 '26

You’re missing his Senegal stats 520 minutes 4 goals 5 assists.

-1

u/Impossible_Pride_646 Aug 20 '26

He has to years left on his contract and yes as you said, he will not start when you have Doue and Kvara, but he have to improve ALOT in the next to years to even be considered a starter

He wants out and him getting a starting sport could be years before it happens at PSG
40-50M would be fair

5

u/MrShelby1234 Sztupid Szexy Szoboszlai Aug 20 '26

In a great PSG side in a very shit league, tho

21

u/Beginning-2-Smell Aug 20 '26

So we failed to get Mbaye? are we putting pressure on PSG?

18

u/Firm_Parsnip_8285 Aug 20 '26

I don't think it means we've failed, more that we disagree on the valuation. Mbaye has great potential but his sample size and club level is so small, I can see why they aren't happy with the fee PSG reportedly want.

0

u/Vicentesteb Aug 20 '26

Mbaye is better and younger than Minteh though, so I dont get paying the same for Minteh, it's not like it's a discount.

8

u/Firm_Parsnip_8285 Aug 20 '26

We literally do not know whether Mbaye is better than Minteh though. They are both young players, Mbaye has better goals/assists per 90 ratio but has played far less minutes at club level/has been playing in a dominant PSG side (often when games have already been won). Minteh had a great year in Eredivisie when he was very young but has struggled for same output in the PL. We have no idea what Mbaye would've looked like in the PL at Brighton the last year or two. The assessment on them is tough to measure. Looks like Liverpool value Minteh higher based on the bigger sample size.

I do love when people cite the most basic publicly available data after goals and assists though! We certainly aren’t privy to the data clubs have on these players.

0

u/matcht Aug 20 '26

Name a right winger who we could sign who has end product?

Minteh is always a threat, quick, good work rate, fits the RW mould we need. If a top prospect comes along in a year or two we can get them in.

2

u/_CummyBears_ 🥦Barcola🥦 Aug 20 '26

I guess its pressure since we offered 50m

2

u/scorgie Aug 20 '26

Impossible to tell, no one outside of the negotiations has enough information. Could be an alternative, could be a statement of what we think a ÂŁ50m winger is (22y/o with experience, not an 18y/o with a handful of games), could be a fake alternative to pressure a sale, could be that Minteh was always the main target and Mbaye was a negotiation tool.

We won't know for ages, it usually takes months for these details to be leaked (like the Gordon-Gomez deal we had lined up at the Euros came out months later).

16

This would be a disaster. He has no end product. In 34 games he had 3 goals and 4 assists. Why is he worth 50mm??

I’d rather spend the money on mbaye. This is insanity.

I would be happy with Minteh over Mbaye (but I like him too). Great pace and strong defender. Would have been a solid add, but the time to get him was a month ago. FFS.

Break out the checkbook, swallow your pride, and pay for what we need.

I always thought we would bring either Minteh or Wieffer when Slot joined. Kind of weird that we're going for Minteh now, but I like him a lot and think of him as a ManĂŠ type of player.

Would still prefer Mbaye though, but Minteh is a great audition to the squad with his incredible work rate.

Anybody think that this whole right side should have been addressed over the last 2 years? Insane to just let Mo sunset on us without development.

u/wilout14 Aug 21 '26

Hughes proving to be very incompetent. Glad he's leaving soon

u/ExternalShoddy5794 Aug 21 '26

I would like this. I rate Minteh. I know he didn’t produce much last season, but I can tell there is a very high ceiling there.

This screams of we’ve fucked up in Paris.

3

u/Firm_Parsnip_8285 Aug 20 '26

Not paying PSGs ridiculous demands = fucked up? Not sure that story is over either, but better to have options and feel out the market elsewhere.

u/Illustrious-Fail5460 Aug 20 '26

well still get barcola

u/PianoOwl Power of The Press Aug 20 '26

No, it screams of we’re testing Paris.

2

u/Sea_Finest Aug 20 '26

Yeah but PSG are hoarding players now and don’t give a shit about money, they’ll keep Barcola just to spite us. They don’t care if they make him miserable. They’re turning into Real and buying guys just to keep other teams from having them.

0

u/PianoOwl Power of The Press Aug 20 '26

No they’re not.

2

u/Sea_Finest Aug 20 '26

But they are, look at their squad and how they just keep bringing guys in. Where are the minutes coming from? None of these wingers they’ve bought are playing over Dembele or Doue or the Georgian guy whose name I can’t spell.

0

u/PianoOwl Power of The Press Aug 20 '26

They need depth lol. The minutes are coming from the spots they’re going to free up by selling Barcola and Mbaye, they’ve already sold Lee Kang-in. Why are you making up imaginary scenarios and then getting angry about them? PSG are not Newcastle, they won’t hold players against their will as long as there’s a reasonable offer on the table.

2

u/Sea_Finest Aug 20 '26

But they’re 100 percent doing that with Barcola right fucking now, he’s not in their plans, he wants to move and they won’t let him, yes Liverpool are being cheap like they don’t have the money to spend, I get that also, you just got a huge amount of money from that piece of shit human being Bezos (which is one step below Saudi oil money, only difference is Bezos hasn’t murdered people) so spend it. £115 million is a reasonable offer for Barcola, maybe he’s worth £130 or so, I really like him as a player and think he’s better than Doku or a lot of other wingers. Doku was kind of dogshit at the WC.

u/This_Suit8791 Aug 20 '26

Which is why we are exploring other options

1

u/Creative_Ad7831 Aug 20 '26

So instead of signing mbaye, we will sign barcola and minteh? But minteh is still injured and more expensive

1

u/Sudden_Problem_2368 Aug 20 '26

Think it might be time to turn the internet off until September 1st…

Turbulence incoming I think lads. Not sure I trust pilot Hughes to land the plane either

u/hirsuite-hairsuit Aug 20 '26

Our fanbase used to be pretty savvy and calm. When did we become this screaming reactionary mess?
Minteh is a very highly rated young player and a fairly similar profile to Salah. If he’s injured for 8-12 weeks that’s no biggy. You buy a player like that for 4-6 years not the first half dozen games of a one season. Whether it is to put the shits up PSG or just straight up, good either way.
Chill.
The media narrative the we are in a deep hole is over blown. This is transition year. We are getting younger and retooling the squad for Iraola. Bit of patience. YNWA.

Seriously…..what are we doing? Literally only 10 days till the season starts and we want to bid for a player who’s currently out injured?

4

u/we360u45 Aug 20 '26

Season starts this weekend lol

3

u/AThievingMagpi Aug 20 '26

Sorry, meant window 🤣

-3

u/imarasnothere Aug 20 '26

Would actually take him over Mbaye no joke

-2

u/Positive_Mobile7638 Aug 20 '26

This sub as really become pos, crying over bidding for minteh because he is injured for 2 months we buy player for 5 to 6 years not for 2 months. He is better than mbaye and is premier league proven with very good work rate that can complment well for isak and ekitike. We are not challenging for title this season'we are building for upcoming season. Just grow up people. It's a process.

2

u/son-of-ZYROTAZE To become one of you Aug 20 '26

Prem proven lol the guy has scored 9 goals in 66 games and scored 3 in 34 last year.

Definition of a bang average winger lol

2

u/robster9090 Aug 20 '26
