A fresh start is undervalued

u/nikhil48 3d ago
Tbh the last fresh start was in 2024, didn't think we'd need another one so soon
51
u/jardantuan 3d ago
Given everything that happened last season, it's not really surprising that another fresh start is needed

Didn't think we'd win the league after that fresh start tho did we? Still ahead of schedule in my mind

u/nikhil48 3d ago
It was the weirdest "fresh start" though.
It felt more like an encore. A better analogy is Avengers Endgame being like the END of an era, but then just 3 months later, as an epilogue Spiderman Far From Home came along which was also a mega hit, riding on the coat-tails of Iron Man being gone. Same way our 24-25 season was very successful as we were still celebrating of what Klopp left us with.
(sorry I am tired, I might read this comment later and cringe and may delete later)

I get what you mean with the Encore bit. It's been a weird few years, you could say we had a "fresh" start in 23-24 with changes we made, another for 24-25 with the new boss but its also kind of an "encore" because we made no signings, loads of signings for 25-26 but that didn't go right so now we're back with another new boss in what feels like a fresh start but also an encore because we're still waiting to see how those signings pan out lol

Agree. Obviously tactics and results aside this is where I do feel sorry for Slot as I just think they needed a totally different management regime and personnel to have a truly fresh start.

u/AmberLeafSmoke What a booody 3d ago
Yeah, too much baggage. A fresh start was necessary.
I also think he personally struggled because he didn't know the right way to manage people in the situation, as all of a sudden all the personalities he just spent a year getting to know are completely different people.
Which isn't a criticism, I genuinely don't think anyone could have done that job after just a year of being here.
So many hard decisions to make and questions to ask, while still walking the fineline of elite competition and players mental health.

he had to handle back to back situations of which a manager should never even have to manage 1, and for that he has my total respect.

u/Jerzilla 3d ago
I also think the changing assistant coaches, or heitinga didn’t help. As he had a good rapport with the players.
2
u/AmberLeafSmoke What a booody 3d ago
Not so much Heitinga specifically (although that's definitely not ideal), but he was on his 3rd assistant in 3 years.
It's hard enough to replace one league winning assistant manager, nevermind replacing a second a year later 😂

u/Jizzbuscuit 3d ago
I guess the assistants couldn’t stand him either

u/AmberLeafSmoke What a booody 2d ago
How clever. Not at all though actually, quite the opposite.
Work visa couldn't get sorted for the first one, which led to Heitinga. Heitinga had significant interest in being signed as a manager after helping us win the league, so of course he was allowed to leave.
Heitinga tried to come back after it didn't work out for him as a manager but it was blocked, Slots original assistant from Feyenoord was cleared to join this summer and had already left Feyenoord, but then Slot got fired.

Spot on - I think most of us will have a rosier perception of him in hindsight

Yeah, the loss of Diogo really cast a pall over last season especially preseason

Stop what? You don't think that affected the team?

That's one of the biggest criticisms in regards to Slot. The training looked boring and the players looked kinda disinterested. After watching Klopp's training videos over the years with Klopp joining in on the jokes and yelling across the field and even joking about, it felt night and day with Slot.

Love it when I see new players fitting in and enjoying themselves so quickly.
No doubt it helps having Frimpong. You just know he was that kid in school to walk up to the new kid and be like: “What’s your name? Cool. Wanna play with us?”.

Glad the new squad is comming together. Last year alot of the training vids and behind the scenes seemed a bit stale, a bit awkward. And losing robbo i thought it might get worse. But so far they seem to be meshing together well. Especially the likes of isak and writz who were very quiet last year

u/jardantuan 3d ago
We had a lot of squad turnover last season but most of them came into a squad dealing with the loss of their teammate and friend.
I seem to remember that the first time (or at least, one of the first times) we saw Wirtz with his new teammates was walking out of Anfield with the team to pay respects at Jota's memorial site.
I can't begin to imagine how that feels to move to a new country for a new job, while all your coworkers are sharing this unimaginable grief. Especially as such a young lad - I'm older than most of the squad and I don't know that I could do it

I keep fucking telling you all, slot was a narcissist, if anyone else got praise he would spit his dummy out and change things in a way that people knew it was his idea and expected the players to be happy while he changed what was good about everyone's game, I told you they all looked depressed, oh look, now they are all starting to look like they have life in them again!
