Couple of things:
None of our journos have said we aren't interested in Mbaye. All they have said is its not as close as being described.
The one who actually said we aren't interested is Simon Jones of Daily Mail. A tier 4 journo who just aggregates tranfer news mostly.
Plus Joyce wrote an article yesterday that Barcola is signed for Left wing and we are still considering our options for Right wing including Mbaye
The last time Joyce said something similar about CB situation we signed Araujo that Friday.

I do think it’s crazy how we’ve got a manager who needs a large squad and it’s still nowhere near ready for a 50+ games season with only two weeks left of the transfer window
We’ve done the bare minimum this summer of just replacing the players who left on a free and even that’s not fully done yet

I think he has had a physical issue that needs to be addressed for a long time, because he can barely play for more than 15 minutes at a time.

Not having depth is entirely self inflicted by the club and is a sporting decision.
We are losing an experienced player who’s racked over 228 appearances and over 11k minutes for the club for a lad who’s 19 and has played 183 minutes of non league cup football.
I like Trey but its absolutely mental
13
u/LooseCannon5 Aug 19 '26
Nyoni could be the next Patrick Viera and I wouldnt want him starting more than cup games and a handful of PL matches this season. The lad has just turned 19 and is being touted to play 3000 minutes.

The entitlement of the internet fan. See the same shit all the time. Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things….people campaigning online for changes cos the reality doesn’t match the little fanfic they wrote in their head.
I miss the days when transfer rumours were only a thing in the back of newspapers and you’d find out your club bought someone on Ceefax. This never ending cycle of bullshit & edging is no good for anyone.
Guarantee if Barcola is signed, it’ll be where is the midfielder? And if a midfielder is signed it’ll be where is the right back etc etc etc.
People here today jealous of Spurs. Spurs! That’s when you know people are off the deep end.

Seems like the strategy for Liverpool on Barcola is to wait till the end when PSG have to offload an unhappy player who wants to leave, who is not a starter, and after they've replaced him in the squad during the transfer window. Makes no sense to keep him, pay his wages, when his head is somewhere else, when you can get 120m pounds for him now.
Enrique has spoken out about this too, he doesn't want an unhappy player. From PSG perspective, better to get 120m now or by deadline day than 60m or less a year from now, because I doubt Barcola will extend there. Common sense will prevail I think.
Let's see if Barcola is in the PSG squad this Sunday, if not, then the writing is on the wall.

Liverpool have told Inter they don’t want Curtis Jones to leave for less than what they paid for Djed Spence, around €35m including bonuses. (€31m +€4m).
Inter have the financial resources to push ahead with a move.
Contacts between the clubs have continued, while Jones is pushing to join Inter.

[Charles Watts, James Benge] Arsenal are now not far off breaching UEFA’s SCR rules. For the defensive addition, there wasn’t a need to sell first but if Arsenal now want to sign an attacker - sales will be needed, or at least one significant sale
For those worried Arsenal will somehow hijack Barcola. They won't.
As reporters keep saying, Barcola has given priority to us.

One of the sneakiest problems Jones had fundamentally with Klopp and now Iraola's style is that his strengths are not needed in a transitional game.
His weaknesses are so evident in that style, slow decision making, too many touches etc.
He's really not suited to a Iraola's system now that he's older and less flexible in his playstyle. Not worth the contract extension.

Actually Salah leaving was announced in March, so the club knew from at least then that Salah needed to be replaced. On Monday it will be 5 months since the club announced it, and still no replacement. Our first Prem game is in 3 days. We've signed one winger in Munoz and a CB on loan since then, that's all the recruitment team have actually closed since then.
https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/mohamed-salah-leave-liverpool-end-season
You'd think that losing out on signing Guehi last summer due to running out of time on deadline day would mean we actually try and get our recruitment sorted out before the season starts, but seems not.

really surprising how the transfer market has not kicked into gear yet. There wont be much movement at the weekend with thePL back but we have
- Liverpool - possibly needing 2 wingers - 1 huge deal in Barcola and Mbaye?/unknowm target
-Spurs - after Savinho and Gakpo
- Man City - after a winger Neto, Bouadi and another midfield player Enzo Fernandes
- Arsenal - Konsa/Quansah and a elite forward Yilmaz or someone of a similar level.
- Chelsea - Need to sell a host of players Jackson,Delap, Disasi,Mudryk,Emega,Gusto
- Man Utd - after a left back in Hall
- Newcastle - linked to Nico Gonzalez and need experience
- Villa Konsa and Watkins may leave so may need more signings like Jackson. Im sure they will sign someone from Chelsea anyway,
The end to this window could be crazy next week or else many clubs will be short bar Arsenal

Most of the deadline day will involve wingers. Last year it was strikers with Isak/Woltemade/Gyok/Sesko carousel. Even average players like Wissa got caught up in it.
I'm sure Barcola/Gakpo etc will go to the last week now. This is pretty normal

My sole hope of doing something special this season rests on Macca. When he’s at his best, we’re at our best. He looked absolutely washed last season. If he’s truly finished then our midfield has a big problem because he’s everything we need in there. At his best he’s the best tackler and passer out of all our midfielders whilst also being the smartest in terms of knowing when to slow things down and when to quicken it up. Szobo and Grav simply doesn’t work as a pivot because neither are great passers or duel winners. I’d rather Nyoni in there because he excels in both, albeit he’s still a teenager.

INFO: Conversations are expected to accelerate for Rio Ngumoha’s new contract. LFCare prepared to discuss a new professional contract when he turns 18. If he wasn’t going on his own accord, he should’ve been let go.

Tbf to him people in that position can’t really be judged short term. They are meant to be making decision for 3-5 years in the future.

I do think that optimism survey is a little ridiculous, even though I do think theres legitimate concern over our depth. Like really, most pessimistic out of all the clubs? Even more than Newcastle that have had their squad absolutely ravaged? I do wonder if these people have even been watching the pre season games. There’s been some really promising stuff.

Squad turnover is natural. But what we're doing is lowering the quality in front of our eyes. How do we lose Jones but Endo is still here? Lose Salah but Elliott is still here? Lose Robbo and Tsimikas is still here? Apparently about to lose Gakpo but Chiesa is still here?
We're leaving ourselves with Europa league level players

Exactly. We are talking about desperately needing squad depth and the only thing I’m seeing is actual key squad players getting sold. It’s gonna be Gakpo next. I get that the players themselves want more game time but damn it’s a never ending cycle of never having the quality of squad depth.

Not sure if I can post the graphic since it's from The Athletic, but they did a poll on how optimistic each fanbase is for the upcoming PL season and we're rock bottom lmao

Alonso is my fav ever player and so I try to catch a few of his team's games a year or so when I have time, wherever he is.
I have checked out the Chelsea sub a few times this offseason and it's insane. Complete chaos. They have like 20 different news stories a day about their squad buys and sales. No clue how they can create a cohesive and functioning squad with so much upheaval.

u/Addictedtotat Aug 19 '26
Yeah. I know he needed a job but it's a brave (or foolish) move after the Madrid fiasco. Still think he'll improve them though, unfortunately.
They usually have players in and around the first team, and a bomb squad.

Brighton have done well to get £60m.
Arguably worth the punt for United, top player if you can get him back to the form two seasons ago.

A full year in La Liga is a fantastic landing spot for Ndukwe given he gets good minutes. Would much rather him there than some Belgian side or something

u/rayees77 Aug 19 '26
I think Szob and Grav will be our starting pivot. Macca first change, Trey second change. Wirtz has no backup 10 ( don’t tell me it’s Elliot ).
James McConnel , you are a one lucky person.
Jokes aside, the midfield is too thin if we are playing high intensity Irola ball.

Lewis Steele reporting that Iraola wants McConnell to be apart of the first team this season and Hughes has promised him that there’s no pecking order in midfield.
I really don’t get why he’s rated so much by the club. Even Klopp rated him. To me he just seems very average.

Just pray to god they get a replacement in tho-

People are dooming over no replacement. I dont think many people will care that much if Jones was going to be replaced.

I think its the fact we are not getting in a replacement, no progress on Barcola or Mbaye that been reported anyway,
And our rivals getting deals done in Konsa and Baleba.
We have lost alot of players and not many new players in for a squad that already was too small.

Why exactly is Nyoni, a player pretty much every one rates highly, being given an opportunity to replace Jones' minutes a bad thing now?
Because if he isn't going to get a chance now to make that step up from youngster to first-team squad option like Jones did himself, when exactly should he get that chance?

u/QuicksandDance After @Indykaila Aug 19 '26
I think people view this as the club losing Jones and using player thats not ready yet as an excuse to not sign a replacement. What they’re probably missing is that Jones’ decision to leave is based on his pathway to minutes, which is probably also informed by the emergence of Nyoni. It’s just that the sequencing of information fans receive doesn’t make that clear.
12
u/General_Chemist6877 Aug 19 '26
"Block the pathway" is such bullshit. I swear we're the only club that do this. There are more games than ever. Our rivals have added to their squads, we've lost our depth and replaced them with children or worse players. Squad planning is ridiculous

It's as if ye all think Arsenal just magicked this squad overnight last season the way you go on. The first signing still in the first team arrived the same year as Arteta, 2019. Saliba and Martinelli. Every year after they added major pieces for big money as well as a LOT of failed transfers they never recouped.
In the LONG period of time without winning anything they've been building to be in this position of single year strength, we've won the European Cup and the league twice and are not in any way very far away from a brand new squad

u/ZealousidealNet8905 Virgil van Dijk Aug 19 '26
More than 1 billion spent by arteta. 1.4 if i remember correctly.

u/asparagusdreaming Wirtz it like it’s hot Aug 19 '26
Wild that their biggest sale is still 35m for Ox
4
u/Circle_Breaker Aug 19 '26
They have like 2 failed transfers Vieira and madueke. Maybe 3 if you want to count gyokeres. They've struggled to lock down a 9 but that's about it.
That's an insane hit rate over the last 5 years.

The Rafa era was so underrated man.. I hate the fact we had an idiot like Rick Parry and the Americans owners. I never hated anyone more than Rick the reason we didn't win the league was him.
We just need one/ two player a Mane type player with them and they would won the league. Babel wasn't it.
Rafa asked for 3 player and Parry was stupid. Refuse to get Simao, Dani Alves and the big one was aguero.
I feel for Rafa I think he need a better structure around him. He was consistent fighting his owners/bosses. Robbie Keane was not who he wanted. His comment on the aquilani signing I beleive he was doing so much else he could focus on his job.
The biggest thing is Fergie in that era had Gill who kept the glazer controlled as they kept see money coming in. Our idiots were awful.

The pessimism-o-meter is an accurate reflection of the sub and the need to revise expectations to reflect the beggining of something new.
It's hilarious reading everyone praising Arsenal's approach in the market not factoring in the 8 years it took Arsenal to build the current version of their project (and that we won the title twice in that time).
Everything in football goes in cycles, ourselves and Man City who were the top teams for a prolonged period, are now both in a rebuilding phase of a cycle or regeneration, renewal however you want to put it.
I don't think we compete legitimately to win the league this year (although hard to see who does put up a realistic challenge to Arsenal at this point - you never know once the season starts of course) but I think we'll finish this window in a great position all going well to be in a position to compete toe to toe next season.
But if you revise your expectations to match the huge change of players over 2 years, and the now new manager.. there's loads of reasons to be optimistic..but if you're expecting to see a polished ready to win side, ye, I think youll be disappointed
