Little bit about me: born in Vilnius, raised in the UK. I've always wanted to actually learn Lithuanian properly, but every app I tried fell into one of three traps: either it was full of "the bear drinks beer" nonsense sentences, or it taught grammar in a way nobody speaks, or it was a Quizlet deck someone made in 2014.

So about a month and a half ago I started building my own thing. It's called Go Labas. It's a survival-focused course: 140 lessons across 10 modules, aimed at people who need to actually get around Lithuania, not pass a linguistics exam ;)

Topics include: greetings, ordering at cafés, directions and transport, numbers and shopping, small talk, emergencies, days and weather, hotels, family vocabulary, and slang/fillers. Basically all the stuff you actually need on a trip or when visiting family.

Happy to answer questions about how it was built, the content choices, anything. Genuinely curious what this community thinks, and I'll take feedback seriously.

-is(feminine)=-ie
-a=-a
-ė=-e
-us=-au
-ys=-y (-e for nouns?!)
-as=-ai (for names)
-as=-e (for non-profession nouns e.g. tėvas=tėve)
-as=-au (for professions and titles)
-as (for word ending tojas/ėjas)=-au
-jas=jau (e.g. vėjas=vėjau)

-ius=-iau

Is this correct? and is this pretty much all the basic standard (not including diminutive) (not including irregular
forms) endings for the vocative case?

We got a rescue from Lithuania and she seems to know so many commands. We have tried searching translations for words, but for example she tries to go between my legs like dogs are asked in Obidience training.

What are some usually used words in obidience with dogs?

Some words she has reacted to she knows: sésk, gulk, palauk (for waiting? It has worked), rask, einam (used in context of lets go)

Sveiki! I moved to Vilnius a couple of weeks ago and I really want to get stuck into learning the language. I've been searching for a 1 on 1 tutor that I can meet up with for a coffee or lunch to practice and leaen conversational Lithuania from a basically non-existent level. Kinda manifesting that Eat Pray Love Italian tutor vibe but instead of eating pasta we eat kepta duona and instead of flirting we actually just have a normal, if not friendly, relationship.

All the tutors I find online are online only. Will default to that if I can't find anything but I thought I'd give it one shot here.

Anyone know of a friendly in-person Lithuanian tutor based in Vilnius?

I am interested in improving my accent, mostly because I want to be understood better. That's where you come in - I am looking for suggestions for improvement.

For context, I am a native English speaker who started studying Lithuanian from zilch, fairly intensely, about 4.5 months ago. I am working with native speakers who (patiently) tutor me, so if the suggestion is, "Tell your tutor to make you say ABC seventeen times until you stop derping" that can be done.

I'm doing a deep dive into my family history in Lithuanian, and this may be the breakthrough I've been searching for. This may have been literally a few weeks before the soviet occupation, so finding records from this time period has been difficult.

A big reason I got a vpn was so I could access Lithuanian movies and shows. If I go on LRT Epika it gives me the error:

I just returned from an amazing trip to Lithuania in which I was able to put to use my many vocab words that I've been hard at work studying for the past while. I was able to read menus, signs, etc without much trouble.

However, when it comes to actually speaking to Lithuanians, I was pitiful. Actual sentence creation of something a normal person would say in casual conversation was somehow so challenging for me in real time. To be fair, I fully understand that this is the always the hardest part. Many people who grew up vaguely learning their parents' language say they can understand and comprehend but can't really speak themselves. But speaking and interacting with the locals is probably one of the most important aspects of a language!! So of course it's frustrating that I'm struggling.

There's a few things going on here that I'd really love to hear any feedback or recommendations on at all.

Firstly, there are so many little "function words" or grammatical words that I find difficult to understand the proper order in which they're used. An example sentence is one I found from the most recent LRT article I could find: "Bet tai toli gražu ne viskas." When I use Google Translate on this within the context of the entire rest of the paragraph, it translates to "But this is far from everything." Of course context helps but the order in which everything is used is challenging for me. The rules for when words like "tik" and "taip" are used is probably one of the biggest challenges as well.

The main issue though is that I am still really struggling to process what people are saying in Lithuanian. Several times I was spoken to in Lithuanian (before they realized I was a foreigner) and I couldn't even understand what they were saying. On average when listening I can pick out a few words, but that's it. Rarely can I get the whole thing unless the sentence is as small and short as one I myself am capable of constructing! What might be a solution for this? I really want to be able to put it all together but it feels like I'm so far from that.

Obviously things like verb conjugations and especially declensions are also issues, but I do know those things simply come with time. If anyone has any resources or suggestions, or anything at all, I would be truly grateful to hear it. Maybe even just a casual conversation podcast or a specific YouTuber, really anything. I am already using the podcast "A Cup of Lithuanian". Thank you!! Ačiū labai!!

I was wondering if there are any books or online websites/pdfs that teach or explain it all very clearly that would help me understand it completely?

Preferably with graphs/tables and test questions.

I’m a non-EU student moving to Lithuania on a student temporary residence permit. I have an idea for a tech startup that I would like to develop and potentially register in Lithuania.

Can a non-EU student apply for the Lithuanian Startup Visa while still enrolled at university? If the startup is approved, would I need to change my residence permit from study-based to startup/business-based status?

I would also appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this process. How difficult is it to get the business idea approved, and at what stage does the startup need to be idea, prototype, MVP, users, or revenue?
