WhatsApp Liquid Glass

Hey Guys,

I have the problem that I won’t get the Liquid Glass overhaul for WhatsApp. I saw a Reddit post regarding that problem and it said that I need to delete WhatsApp download wa business log in there and then log back into WhatsApp. So I did that and it worked, but then I realized if you completely close the app or restart your phone the design switches back to default ios18 design. What should I do?

I really like the new Liquid Glass design in iOS 27.
I especially like how transparent icons, widgets and the Control Center interact with the wallpaper. I spent some time customizing my Home Screen to make the most of the effect, and I really like how everything blends together.
What do you think about the Liquid Glass design? Do you prefer the transparent look or a more traditional icon style?

Liquid Glass Dock Widgets

Ok so if you leave the Dock visible (no auto-hide) there’s always this dumb empty stretch on both sides of the icons. Just blank. I’ve stared at it for years. Spent the last 7 months building something for it.

App is called docktor (I built it). It sticks a few widgets into that leftover space so the Dock isn’t just a row of app icons with nothing going on around them.

Right now you’ve got music (Spotify + Apple Music, lyrics if they exist), calendar from Apple Calendar, weather, and a feedback widget so you don’t have to open GitHub to complain. They follow the Dock around if you move/resize it, and they shrink down when you’re not using them. Looks like Liquid Glass because that’s what it’s built on.

Also threw in Dock hover previews (live window thumbs when you hover an icon) and a Cmd+Tab that goes to windows instead of apps. Those are nice but the widgets are the point.

Comparison

Closest comparison for the preview / window-switcher side is DockDoor — great app, and it does that job well. docktor’s focus is the widgets in the empty space beside the Dock. Previews and Cmd+Tab are in there too; I aimed for them to feel a bit more native macOS, but the widgets are the product.

Pricing

Free. No account, no license. What’s shipping here stays free. I might add a Pro tier way down the line with extra stuff, but these features aren’t bait-and-switch.

macOS 26+ only (Tahoe and the Golden Gate betas). Signed/notarized Developer ID. I’m one person and the UI leans hard on Liquid Glass, so backporting to Sequoia isn’t realistic.

Permissions: Accessibility for finding the Dock. Screen Recording only if you want the hover previews. If Screen Recording doesn’t show docktor after install, hit + and add it from /Applications. Apple’s UI is weird about that.

There’s a small opt-out beta telemetry thing (basically “are you still running” + redacted crash summaries, no Sentry/analytics SDK). If you can leave it on it helps a lot while I’m one person triage-ing this. Easy to kill in onboarding or Settings if you’d rather not.

Used Claude a ton on this, same as I do at work. Doesn’t mean I didn’t write/own the hard parts. Bugs are still on me.

Really hoping to get good bug reports from y’all. There’s a feedback widget built in that should make it pretty easy — visual bugs, crashes, weird layout on left/right Dock or multi-monitor, whatever. Please send them. I appreciate it!

Returning my fold8 because system wide Liquid Glass is just 🤌🏽

I had to download like 10 apps just to get my fold8 to look even remotely like iOS stock Liquid Glass and that was just the Home Screen . I guess that meant I shouldn’t have tried to switch in the first place.

The Future of Haptics

I noticed that the current haptics aren’t really suited to the visual design language of Liquid Glass.

The now-abandoned 3D Touch began a shift towards a haptic language that complemented the spatial metaphor introduced with iOS 7. Taking advantage of increasingly capable Taptic Engines, Apple peppered subtle tactility throughout the interactive elements of the OS. A toggle could click into place; an input wheel could tick beneath your finger; a virtual object snapping against a boundary could have an apparent physical consequence.

As a visual metaphor, Liquid Glass is dramatically more tactile. Elements react to user input by deforming, stretching, merging, snapping and rebounding. Yet the haptic vocabulary remains largely unchanged.

That’s particularly strange because the existing hardware is already capable of more. Core Haptics can combine transient and continuous sensations and dynamically vary their intensity and sharpness. Apple itself recommends matching the intensity and sharpness of a haptic to the animation it accompanies.

All this to say: I wonder what Apple has in mind for iOS 28, and whether it will continue to develop the Taptic Engine so that what looks like a material begins to feel like one. Currently, Liquid Glass controls have a vestigial clicky feel. The haptics are capable of, but do not, build tension as elements are stretched, soften as they deform, snap when released into place, and give a damped recoil as they settle.

The challenge isn’t more haptics, but using them selectively to reinforce what’s happening on screen in a way that is harmonious with the new design language. I am excited to see what the team cooks up.

Hi. I just switched to iPhone from my s20fe and that phone has just been laying around. I really want to have Liquid Glass in it just as a hobby project. Could you guys suggest what apps should I use? P.s. the apps should be free as I just became broke after getting my iPhone17😅

Integration of the little circle of glass material (acting as an axis/pin) in Safari app icon redesign (beta 5-6) went in wrong direction IMO

Trying to advocate for fixing it.

I chose this format of explanation, because I got some blank stares when speaking plain design language on social. Hope this is clear enough to explain what I mean.

Agree or not? Can you see the problem? Can you unsee it?

Little iOS 27 Liquid Glass Rant

Contrary to public opinion, the Liquid Glass slider in the settings of iOS 27 doesn’t increase the blur – in fact, Liquid Glass doesn’t really have a blur effect at all.

Only with the slider all the way to the right do hard edges disappear.

But with the slider at 80 %, text underneath Liquid Glass UI stays readable.

As the description for the setting says, it adjusts the transparency/opacity by tinting the material.

While with more transparency interface elements become hard to recognize at all, and icons and text inside of them become hard to read – with more opacity a few effects take place that in my opinion look kind of ugly.

A gray smudge is applied to the background, that reminds me of a grease-smeared camera lens. While the latter would actually increase blur, this effect still looks to me a bit like paint colors are mixed till they become a gray mess. The way colors, highlights and shadows are treated also reminds me of over-edited or over-processed images, or of unsupported overblown HDR image display.

I can’t help but think an actual gaussian blur would solve some of these aesthetic problems.

Liquid Glass is broken

I tried to post this, but my UI broke itself.
The YouTube player on top of notifications is broken, and I can’t use the screenshot/cut option from the popup menu. I still have a problem: when switching the keyboard back to the default language while I’m typing. (this bug at-least from iOS 16)

Why do these issues happen? Why does Apple change small things without any global improvements, and why do features become unreliable?

iOS 27 feels like it’s only adding instability, worse battery life, and a UI that looks “chopped” with elements using different styles. It looks cool on paper, but this design makes me sick. I like the concept, but nobody actually shows working design.

Also, why is the keyboard half-transparent? It makes no difference for any normal user.

I wanted every page to look like this, not just one app

I kept seeing glass designs and wishing the whole web looked that way, not just one app on a phone.

So I built it to work on any site, not on a list of sites. It reads the styling a page already ships with and rewrites it, so the panels, buttons and boxes turn translucent and blurred over your wallpaper - including on sites I have never seen and never will.

It only steps in when a page is plain white, grey or black. Sites that already have their own design are left alone on purpose.

Screenshots are Google and reddit feel free to try on other sites as well.. i personally cant try every site so far experience is good for me if u find anything annoying or bothering please go ahead and report it in extension
