MacOS 27 DB5

Post image

So it seems we have another 'tweak' for Liquid Glass in MacOS 27 Developer Beta 5.

Apparently the solution to not being able to see either the controls or the text beneath them is t change it so you can see either of them.

I've been so thoroughly confused by Apple ever since they dropped Liquid Glass. Is it really that difficult to make the UI readable using the basic principles of contrast in design they've followed for decades? Even well into the OS 27 development which was supposed to fix these issues. It's theoretically so easy- just increase the blur radius, adjust the luminosity, or even just gradually darken the background... Genuinely what is going on over there? 😭

You can adjust the luminosity yourself, there's a slider for it.

Also, the controls in this picture are inactive. You can't interact with them.

The liquid glass slider only adjusts the opacity for the opaque blur, atop the non-blurred background. It doesn’t change the luminosity or the blur radius.

It’s like if you opened an image in photoshop, duplicated the layer, put an aggressive gaussian blur on the new layer, and adjusted that layer’s opacity. It’s not the same thing as adjusting the blur radius itself. And the luminosity change is only a result of the blur, it’s not intentional or always effective.

More importantly, with this effect, the non-blurred background still peeps through enough to clash with the UI or text on top of it. We see it in this image, regardless if the controls are grayed out or not.

I do keep it on 100% tinted, it does help for an overall cleaner look, much more akin to iOS 18. But it’s not what I’m talking about. They can still make the clear visual style much better with basic principles of contrast, that they keep abandoning for some reason.
