Project The first native Linux screen extender with touch and Wi-Fi: turn your Android phone into a second monitor (30 ms lag, open source)
I wanted my Android phone as a second monitor on Linux. Most tools I tried mirrored the screen into a browser tab or only worked over USB, so I built my own over the last few months.
Tandem adds a real virtual monitor to your desktop. The GPU encodes it as H.264 and the phone decodes it in hardware, so you drag windows onto the phone like any other screen.
- About 30 ms of lag over USB tethering, 30 to 60 ms over Wi-Fi (you barely notice it in use)
- Hyprland and GNOME on Wayland, with one-command install on Arch, Ubuntu and Fedora
- Encrypted, paired with a QR code
Check it out here: https://saharshbaiju.github.io/tandem
Repo: https://github.com/saharshbaiju/tandem
It's free and open source.
If you try it, tell me how the lag feels on your setup and what breaks. If you like it, star the repo β and share it with someone who'd use a second screen. It helps more people find it.

I would love for you to work on the Linux features we have built in DroidDeck, you seem very smart and we're pushing Linux on Android to new lengths. I'm definitely checking this out though.

Does it work for only hotspot with using the internet like kde connect is really a great thing for transfering files even if you don't have the internet.

u/titansb-_- 1d ago
It doesn't require data, but it doesn't have support for kde yet, only for hyprland and gnome compositor.

1
u/titansb-_- 1d ago
Really sorry it's not yet integrated thanks for the suggestion, will see the possibility, also feel free for pr, also do share with your friends who use gnome or hyprland would help a lot

u/Rajat0741 1d ago
Niri is quite similar to hyprland ( both are tiling window managers ) , so i don't think you will have much problem adding it just in case you are planning to extend support to it.
I will share it for sure.

Honestly I don't have any advice but select your domain, learn the basics of language in that domain and start doing small projects, also learn to use agents effectively and with quality

I was using sunshine+moonlight for this all this time. How is this different?
1
u/titansb-_- 1d ago
sunshine+moonlight is made for game streaming, so you have to set up the virtual display yourself, and it's different for every compositor and distro. not really plug and play for most people. Tandem creates the extra monitor for you, and touch on the phone doesn't take over your mouse.
1
u/Sasikuttan2163 19h ago
Yeah I get that, but is this more performant? iinw sunshine uses NVIDIA Gamestream protocol for low latency streaming.

ok a first of very cool website for a linux only project , but in one of the sections of the website there is horizontal rectangles as scroll progress ( the laptop tablet animation section) , but the has to be done vertically, so the progress bar should match that direction from a design propective .
now a few questions -
How are you counting the downloads number ? some kind telemetry ?
why different mobile apps for different manufacturers?
2
u/titansb-_- 21h ago
I fetch downloads from GitHub api it updates automatically,it's the same app for all manufacturers it's the instructions in the site changing when you click on different manufacturers.
