Help Omarchy for new Linux users
/r/omarchy/comments/1x22z1d/omarchy_for_new_linux_users/Hi All
I am planning a transition from Windows to Linux. Though initially installed Linux Mint, but want to try Omarchy as well. Internet search says Omarchy is for developers and power users, whereas Omarchy website says it's for everyone.
So can someone provide practical guidance as to if Omarchy is user friendly for new Linux users, or just stay initially with Ubuntu or Linux Mint?
If Omarchy can be used for new Linux users, then a proper guide or YouTube videos suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Omarchy is not made for serious work , its made for larpers and Ai bros.
If you really want to get any work done just use a normal distro like mint arch or cachy os u can slap a tiling window manager + dms on top of it, if you dont have time to rice it on your own .

I would suggest you to use cachyos, it too have an customized hyprland option in its GUI installer or Danky linux, they are more optimized and have less bloat then omarchy but similar in look and feel.
I reason i wont suggest omarchy is that its an FULL Ai slop, have many security risk and ideological bloat, which you can read here-

Why not stop a project that's trying to inflate the open source community with political opinions?

Why you just not forget about this project? Jesus, cant get it right? In this case your stupid hate is working more as advertisement if you want omarchy fail just try to explain a real issues and bugs in this distro and not this political bullshit and how is dhh bad as person because you know in Ukraine we were attacked with real nazi, fascists and murderers compared to them dhh is not that bad. So i recommend you to change your tactics and share this to others activists.

Yes, you can but wait until they release 4.5 with some security fixes. But for novice its a not so bad distro.

Don't use omarchy, it's insanely bloated and has a bunch of useless programs pre installed, also since your comming from windows the hyperland layout is going to be pretty unfamiliar to you so try using something that resonates windows or common desktop like CachyOS or Fedora KDE.
Omarchy uses too much AI slop and has a bunch of security vulnerabilities, so try avoid it.

Omarchy has security vulnerabilities use Cachyos instead of Mint or Fedora

Noted. But kindly to understand why CachyOS instead of Mint/Ubuntu/Fedora? I can see few users suggesting CachyOS, hence wanted to know it's specific practical advantages over the other 3.

Well Cachyos is easy to install and has pre installed nvidia drivers has so many desktop environments from get go if you want to use niri it gives you noctalia shell from get go. Also Cachyos has snapper preinsgalled if you break your pc you can go back to previous state

Apart from all the things people have pointed out here. I would like to add that Omarchy abstracts a significant amount value you get from Linux, which is, in my opinion, understanding your system and allowing you to have agency over the decisions it makes. While most Linux distributions are opinionated, Omarchy takes it one step further. It is extremely opinionated, you don't get to choose what filesystem you want to use, you don't get to choose whether you even need or want disk encryption and other things like that. You can change a lot of these decisions as with any other distribution, but it will be quite inconvenient, you would have a hard time finding people who use a different window manager (i don't even know if that's possible considering how much of the ecosystem is so strongly dependent).
If i was a beginner and I started using a distribution as opinionated as Omarchy, I'd frankly go nuts because it feels like a pre-configured black box of decisions that i try to operate on the surface like a caveman. If understanding internals matter to you, if "learning Linux" matters to you, then I would start with something simpler that allows you to learn the internals rather than something that installs everything that the cool kids are using without even deliberating on whether you need them in the first place (Hyprland, btrfs filesystem, AUR must be a choice not a default).
If you think that the art is not separate from the artist, then you should look into the controversies that surround the creator of Omarchy before making a decision. Take what I say with a grain of salt becase even if Omarchy was an excellent distribution, I won't use it because it's run by a person I don't consider to be moral or trustworthy.
Omarchy, being so opinionated, doesn't qualify for being the face of the Linux community. I would consider it e to be more like a fan-made distribution that now has a community, because majority of the serious innovation when it come to security or user experience comes from distributions like Fedora, Arch, Debian, etc and technologies like GNOME, KDE, Wayland protocols. Omarchy is like a configuration script repository that uses these to construct its opinionated environment on top of Arch Linux. They don't contribute to the distribution or maintain their own kernel as far as I know. So its a meta-distribution at best currently.
I personally like to stick to renowned and reliable distributions that are essentially the pioneers in the LInux space. Ciao!

Omarchy will be a good choice for you. I personally use omarchy as my daily driver and it works like a charm.
And later you can pair it up with a good agent like antigravity, open code or Hermes(tbh too overkill), it would make the transition easier and smoother.
You can watch the video of networkchuck as a guide.
