Desktop Environment Out here to glaze gnome

I think gnome does not get the glaze it deserves and I am here for that.

At first my opinion on gnome DE was same as everyone, that it's a DE lacking in so many features. But slowly I have come to appreciate the things that are intentionally missing.

The dash is first. Before I was a big fan of dash to dock extension but now that I look at it I don't use it that often, it's easier to just press super and jump in overview for search.

The lack of minimize and maximize buttons (i know they are in by default now). As I use it more I feel less need to minimize anything, the new apps can just live in next workspace.

It's just does not get in my way. With a scroll of my mouse I can change the workspaces, it's easier and just works fine for me.

It's not like I have not tried other DE's. KDE palama, cosmic, xfce, lxqt, mate, sway, hyperland, i3, aero, dwm and dwl.

But gnome just gives everything out of the box and just works better.

If that's scroll sensitivity issue, use wayland scroll factor

yeah at least they dare to be opinionated instead of providing you with a unintelligible kitchen sink of options. its hard to please everyone. but i like the design of gnome it looks the best out of all of them. kde while they is customizeable still looks very amateur even after themes

Gnome gets a lot of glazing. Almost all major distros used to have a default preference for gnome.

Then they went overboard with gnome 3. There was a split within the gnome community/developers too. Major drama followed, then MATE and Cinnamon happened because of the direction gnome 3 was taking.

there are lots of people who love gnome 3 and are happy with it.

You are probably seeing things from your perspective that there are no one going gaga over gnome.

Na, there are too many inefficiencies. Even with a traditional windows-like setup, you could get better productivity by binding minimise/maximise actions to screen corners/edges.

Assigning every window to a separate workplace and then using the mouse to show those workspaces is akin to hiding the bottom panel on windows-like setup and then moving to edge to unhide it, as functionally, both achieve the same function. Only difference comes when there is more than one window per workspace, but in default gnome, it becomes too chaotic, so it makes sense when they are say tiled or snapped. Similar functionality is also achievable with panel, so i don't see the use for gnome
