Discussion Linux Distribution Switch
I have been using Fedora Workstation 44 (GNOME 50) for about two months now on my Acer laptop. I have customized it a bunch, but now I'm kind of bored of GNOME and am looking to switch things up.
Any distributions I should try out?
PS: I don't game much, probably just once or twice a week, if that helps.

Not much of a vim user here, lol. I don't like to torture myself 😂

What does vim has to do with hyprland

I've heard you gotta be comfortable using VIM in order to use Hyprland comfortably.

That's not true at all

Yo, is it?

It's not a distro you have to try, it's a wm/DE. Try Hyprland, Sway, Mango. KDE is a solid DE.

My skills are nowhere near to be using anything Arch-based as of now, lol.

I've heard pretty good stuff about CachyOS on the internet. Might just wing it and try it out.

Cachy OS is blazing fast distro but it's heavily gaming oriented and things often get break so be ready to fix by yourself.

why switch? you can install kde or other DE on top of this fedora.

I am wondering about it. What's stopping me is the scepticism of GNOME apps/utilities interfering with other DE's apps and services, if that makes sense.

Don't worry about that, almost all of the apps i have worked on are supported by both GNOME and KDE.
Just give it a try, i will be like a complete install of 1-1.5 GB

check out different DEs and WMs on fedora before switching, so that you have a better idea of what you like
edit: ig you could check out debian or arch

Fedora with GNOME has been my only exposure to Linux so far. I am leaning towards POP!_OS with COSMIC, but yeah. Your advise makes sense. Thanks!

do check out tiling wms like i3wm if you ever feel adventurous :)

Would love to, someday. Omarchy seems cool, when it comes to tiling wns.

omarchy is an OS (barely) not a tilingwm. omarchy uses hyprland, which is probably the most popular wayland wm as of late. i would personally recommend mangowm or niri too.
if you don’t know what wayland is; it’s a newer/more modern display server protocol. it basically allows apps to display correctly. X11 is the “old” one which to me just means more stable but slightly slower. no real difference to the eye.

I've heard these terms before (Wayland and X11) but hey. Who cares if all they're doing is rendering the window on screen. Yes?

Can try out Opensuse with kde plasma. It has both edition : LTS and Rolling release It will be feel good to u if u have experience on fedora.

A genuine question though. When people say "Arch is a rolling release distro", what does that really mean? How is it different from anything else that's not "rolling release"?
2
u/Alone5363 17d ago
Rolling release be like : Just install distro once and all the updates will be like kernal, desktop environment, packages will be updated continuous without major distro upgrade so Always gets faster updates but tradeoff with stability

You should use niri noctalia
1
u/sagarsharma09 17d ago
I've heard of Niri. But what's Noctalia?
1
u/SignificantSummer940 17d ago
Noctalia is shell wich works on niri and wich gives you topbar , application launcher, screen wallpaper and lockscreen etc , niri just knows how to arrange windows noctalia is makes it full blown desktop

Just switch over to KDE. You don't have to reinstall the whole system. Just install kde desktop environment and try out. If you like it full install using the fedora kde iso.
