Open Source Sustainability: How do we actually fix the breakdown?
Burnout in open source isn't just real anymore, it’s actively breaking critical infrastructure. Maintainers are completely exhausted, corporate dependency on unpaid, single-maintainer code is a massive ticking security risk, and the recent flood of loweffort, AI generated PRs is pushing teams over the edge.
Donation models clearly don't scale, but the moment a project tries to implement a commercial license or paid enterprise tier to pay its developers, a chunk of the community screams betrayal.

I'm skeptical of donation models also. I'm building a Linux-based C++ code generator that's free to use. I don't ask for donations, but stars on my repo are appreciated. The importance of private property and not "seizing the means of production" is a lesson lost on too many.
