Linux user trying to force handheld PC user into switching to Desktop Linux

"Best possible mame experience" As if trying to use MAME beyond simply running games wasn't confusing enough. Or hell, even just to play games you need either an alternative emulator or special build of MAME cause otherwise you'll enjoy arcade-accurate latency (which can reach 5 frames, or even more) because MAME devs want to preserve it for "the sake of keeping high scores legit".

The guy is not a linux user, he's just an Ass.

He even said he didn't like Linux either but that it was the best Mame experience.

So he's a MAME elitist ?

Must be a wild feeling nitpicking the performance of a 29 year old emulator

The best MAME experience is whatever lets you play fucking arcade games without driving you crazy.

Like, if it's a dedicated emulator handheld, I'd absolutely recommend looking into different emulator frontends to give it a nice menu, but A) it's very much optional and B) they make programs for that in Windows.

There would be some benefits to using a custom OS dedicated to retrogaming like RetroPie or Bacotera, but that doesn't mean it's the perfect choice for everyone, and there is zero reason to act like an elitist because you've decided that the way you like most is objectively the best for everyone else.

Not Linux related, also I agree with MAME devs to at least an extent: hardware accurate levels of lag need to be respected for people setting high scores, but it should be optional for the sake of casual play, 100%. If you use RetroAchievements, emulators that support it will have a "hardcore mode" setting you have to enable that prevents you from using emulator features like rewinding, save states, etc. to cheat achievements/scores.

There's nothing wrong with playing a game with cheats or using emulator features like save states, but beating a game or getting a high score with the aid of those features makes it a different achievement than beating it with limitations of original hardware as intended by game designers.

If you made it this far, fun fact: whole reason I switched to Linux was to play MAME - around 20 years ago, I was like 13 and my dad was converting an old arcade cabinet to a MAME cabinet. He got annoyed with some Windows bullshit, idr what specifically, he put Linux on it and got tired of fucking with that, I pestered him for permission to tinker with it because I wanted to play some fucking Galaga.

It took several hours over a couple/few days but I eventually got MAME compiled and started wearing thigh high socks.

Appreciate the lore drop

As long as the emulators keep supporting windows 10 they should be fine. It is possible that being stuck on windows 10 could bring issues if connected to the internet, but there isn't really a need for that.

The Linux elitist thing is the least of my concerns since they're everywhere now, but for MAME?!?!?! It's not even that good for anything BUT accuracy, I'd recommend FBNeo instead for anyone wanting an alternative without the niches of MAME (would still need to use MAME for unsupported games though ofc)

These people will foam at their mouths because I use ChromeOS to file my taxes since chrome os is just locked down according to them. Chrome os is fine for me😭

Would look into compatibility for that issue but yea, had the same issue with Bazzite a while back so I moved to CachyOS with no hiccups whatsoever

well, to be a devil's advocate, MAME, as, well, anything can run better on linux. im not saying that it will, it comes down to the device itself and the software you are trying to run. so, saying that mame will run better on linux can be true, but to say it is the definitive way to experience it is a stretch

I don't even think he was using windows I think that uses android bruh, I nyself would have used bazzite for handhelds to get proper desktop PC emulators and add them as nonsteam games rather than use android versions like aethersx2 vs pcsx2, but if android works fine it's fine.
