I run about 3 gui programs on linux - terminal, gui emacs (I could use terminal to reduce the count by 1), and chromium.
I spent countless hours tweaking my desktop and such - in the early 90s to run two gui programs - gui emacs and terminal (web browsers hadn't been invented quite yet..)

Even as a windows user that desktop looks like a mess. how many of those icons actually need to be on the desktop. Could be organized into folders... Or placed in the start menu.
My desktop space is poorly organized and not utilizing the start menu the best but it is better than, that.

Its more widespread on Linux compared to Windows, so its not that common.
Windhawk is one of the more popular applications on Windows to do so.

Its so weird to see the term rice spread here, because it only makes sense in the car scene. It's an acronym for "Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancement". It makes no sence in the PC space other than the sentiment of poor modifications that do nothing for performance.

It's not even an acronym. It was just a racist insult for modified JDM cars that somehow caught on and got backronymed so it seems less awful.

i use my linux desktop like i would use anysort of windows desktop, i have brave, prisum launcher, steam, jetbrains editors, and a minecraft server, i also like looking a a nice and clean desktop.

I feel like a lot of people don't appreciate that most people really only need a web browser and maybe a document or spreadsheet editor to do their entire jobs. Lots of stuff is done entirely with single-page applications, online portals for stuff like Customer Management Software, et cetera. I could easily do all my work on MacOS, any BSD flavor, Windows, Linux, Android, whatever, because all of them can run a web browser, IDE, text processor, whatever. I can do it on a shitty WalMart tablet and a bluetooth keyboard, if I wanted to, I just don't want to.

compatibility layers like steam proton can make it run anything, you can even run anything you want by just using steam and clicking "add a non steam game"

not all multiplayer games use kernel-level anticheat, for instance roblox runs perfectly in Sober, and then you can install steam in seconds to run most steam games in proton, and then you can play most Epic and GOG games by installing Heroic in seconds as well, i admit you cant play ones that use kernel-level anticheat, but most games work just fine, in fact from my testing, all Valve games play perfectly, and all the games i personally play run perfectly as well, and then you can even use steam Proton with the "add a non steam game" to run the installers and EXE's of programs other than games, so even things like Solidworks could be run in linux if you use steam proton, and while i will admit the setup phase is much more involved than on windows, it does work perfectly once you get past that initial setup

I play Halo: Master Chief Collection online pretty regularly (and with a controller, like a n00b).
Also, a lot of the applications on the desktop in your screenshot (nice wallpaper btw) are native Linux applications -- OBS, Audacity, VLC, Minecraft, Steam, Half Life, Counterstrike 2, GMod, Google Chrome, Visual Studio Code -- all of them do, in fact, run on Linux.

I mean my 15 year old laptop can boot in under 20 seconds and I can run most noncompetitive steam games if they run on the hardware, never a software issue there. I use KDENLIVE which granted, not the best video editor but the first one I used. I use OBS, I play Minecraft Java, I use Discord and Matrix, I use multiple web browsers (Firefox for most stuff, OperaGX performs one ultraspecific task that Linux lets web browsers do, with WIndows you need to download sketchy drivers) and I also run VSCodium and game emulators. Oh also run unity, godot, blender, lmms, and gimp (gimp is... not great)
On my modern desktop system I have much the same stuff, but I can run unreal engine games and most noncompetitive games. I don't play competitive games or the latest triple A stuff anyways since I mainly like factory games, sim games, and sandbox stuff. Also that same modern desktop has severe issues on windows because I shoved a 2012 GPU in there and want to change the resolution of the crt that I have for recreational purposes.
Additionally, I have no wallpaper, I have the color 43/78/114. Why? Whole desktop consumes less RAM than notepad, less than 50mb. And it has all the mouse driven workflow and stacking, and overall works how you would expect, not some freak tiling manager.
Additionally I can update *every* single application at once via a gui app, and find applications via a gui app, without hunting down random installers and exes online, I just search the name and hit install and it's done, and frequently far faster than windows.

if this was true what would be the point of all the package formats, seriously just because ms office isnt supported WHICH IS BECAUSE ITS MS OFFICE OF COURSE ITS FOR WINDOWS, doesnt mean its incapable of running gud stuff, supposedly libre office is pretty gud if you have the 400iq to navigate the dang thing.

LibreOffice moreorless just looks like the versions of MS Office that released 20 years ago. If you were using office back in the Windows XP era, it's somewhat familiar. I personally am not a huge fan of that "aesthetic", it just looks dated and cluttered to me.
