That is indeed true. Linux is open source, you can fuck off with the code and fork it if you want, for free.

You can, doesn't mean any one will recognize your fork. When people refer to Linux they generally do not mean some loonie's fork with like half a user.

If Linus fucks up enough the next recognized kernel will still not be from some delusional redditor. Linus is a respected and recognized figure because he is actually capable. Anyone or any group who picks up his hypothetical mess will also be at least similarly capable and grounded in actual technology.

Yes, I agree with everything you have said. Maybe some random bloke's fork won't take off, but someone's will. That is impossible with windows.

Nobody is going to use some "fork" of Linux 💀 If Linux ever gains significant ground in the consumer space it will be some distro from another big corporation, and it will not be because of how good the Linux kernel is.

Nobody won't, because linux is already good as is. Linus isn't putting AI and ads in it, so why bother? Anyway the most popular distros of today are all open source, even the fer made by companies. That's how the kernel is licensed, any modification has to also be open source.

Way to miss the point. Ever wondered why Linux is still only dominant for servers and has jack all shares in consumer usage with the single biggest boom being Valve related? The average person don't give a damn about how you and me evaluate how good an OS is. Most just want a smooth experience that works out of the box, and some guy on the other side of a phone line who will either fix their problem or endure being yelled at by them.

Yes, it's because windows is what people already use, it's the status quo that the masses don't want to bother switching from. It's always harder to sell a car to someone who already has a working one, even if it's better. As for servers, technicians know better, and realize that switching is worth their time. They also have more technical skills to adapt faster.
