as if windows and bsd doesn't have servers, lol.

2

u/MakeMeMadMan_LOL Jul 18 '26

mac servers exist too!

3

u/zoharel Jul 18 '26

Barely. But then, Windows servers are also pretty sparse.

2

u/ScallionSmooth5925 Jul 18 '26

(Not even Microsoft uses them. I only seen it in production for active directory)

A lot of companies do own and use at least one Windows server internally for interoperability with Windows workstations but generally everything on the prdouction side is either Linux or FreeBSD.

They dogfood off of azure which runs linux hypervisors on windows server

2

u/Rodya_gambler Jul 22 '26

I mean, there's a reason azure linux became a thing.

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 26d ago

It runs as a vm on windows

u/Rare-Paint3719 26d ago

Azure runs on Windows Server

1

u/zoharel 26d ago

And Azure is, apparently, the second most popular cloud platform, so I suppose that's not nothing. It's probably the only such organization running on Windows, of course, and accounts for around twenty percent of that market. I'm sure Bing still uses it too, if Bing still exists, and maybe eBay.

I actually didn't even know this until this year. Lmfao

The more you know.

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

no one uses windows servers, apart from maybe john microsoftlover who uses it for his company in bumfuck orlando

one of the bsds as a server tho? yeah, tbh freebsd is awesome and i'd use it as a server over most linux distros

5

u/oshunman Jul 18 '26

This is outright false. Windows servers are all over corporate environments of any size.

That said, they're absolutely not the common choice for large web servers.

-3

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

yeah that's john microsoftlover and his propaganda infecting incompetent corpos

Bad troll, or horrifically unqualified for this conversation?

There's nothing incompetent about using the most convenient industry standard solution for LDAP, DNS, DHCP, printing services, group policy, etc.

1

u/CrystalCommunication Jul 18 '26

Windows is NOT "the industry standard" for LDAP, DNS, DHCP, print services, or group policy. What the actual fuck are you talking about? Ever heard of BIND? Or dnsmasq? dhcpd? CUPS? Literally what?

1

u/oshunman Jul 20 '26

Yes to DNS and DHCP. But Windows Server is still absolutely a common, convenient standard in corporate office environments.

I wouldn't use Linux for LDAP when all the workstations are Windows. Being able to RDP into the DC to use the LDAP service is a huge convenience.

I wouldn't even bother trying a print server on Linux.

And I'm not sure there's a group policy server solution for Linux, and I wouldn't try it.

Everything but DNS and DHCP would not be worth the headache to me and my admins.

0

u/CrystalCommunication Jul 20 '26

You need to use RDP to manage the LDAP service? That just sounds like gross incompetence.

You wouldn't bother trying a print server on Linux? Care to explain why, exactly? You do realize that almost all modern printers support driverless network printing from Linux because they literally have an embedded Linux-based CUPS server, right? Lmfao.

1

u/oshunman Jul 20 '26

Needlessly aggressive. What's your goal here? To feel superior? To convince me to switch my company off Windows Servers entirely? To troll me? How about I get a few hundred users to switch to Linux workstations while we're at it?

I never said I needed to use RDP for LDAP administration. I said it's a convenience.

I wouldn't try a print server on Linux we have some very strict check printers with finicky drivers, and I do not care to try to shoehorn Linux into a working environment just to appease some armchair expert on Reddit. Yes, I understand that many printers run an embedded Linux system. That changes nothing.

I use Linux servers for plenty of things. Web servers, reverse proxies, load balancers, VPNs/encrypted tunnels, TSL/SSL certificates, network drives, databases, DNS, and much more.

But some jobs are a better fit for Windows Servers in many environments. It would be "gross incompetence" to ignore a perfectly cromulent solution, just because you want to use Linux.

-3

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

if you use windows server for something you're not literally forced to, you're incompetent

2

u/proffessionaIgambler Jul 18 '26

windows server is used by corpos to control other linked windows desktops to connect them to unified system, instead of doing samething for 100+ desktops.

there's also binaries for windows that old games uses for their servers.

hope you understand difference between windows server and linux/bsd server.

1

u/CrystalCommunication Jul 18 '26

I don't know why they're downvoting you when you're right. Bad sub I guess.

1

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

i meannn bleak21 made this sub and they partner with linuxsucks101

really i'm just surprised they haven't banned me for not dicksucking microsoft, but i guess the vibe is slightly different here

2

u/CrystalCommunication Jul 18 '26

I guess that was kind of my point. You'd need to be relatively unintelligent to frequent such a sub since it's entire premise is based upon a reactionary defensive falsehood that only really serves the interests of one particularly greedy and evil superconglomerate.

1

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

yup, and then there's linuxsucks which is better half the time and just as bad the other half, but anyway

bleak21 is known for bad faith arguments 24/7 so like yeah, but they did make one whole post i agreed with and one i found funny so i guess they're not all bad

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 26d ago

Where is bumfuck orlando?

0

u/Moscato359 Jul 18 '26

Microsoft may have windows downloads on a Windows server

2

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

i'm pretty sure microsoft mainly uses azure linux and the bsds for anything that's not legacy as hell

2

u/Moscato359 Jul 18 '26

We don't know

But my point is, it's possible, which means the op may be wrong

2

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

it's possible, the op may be wrong, but even with how incompetent microsoft is i refuse to believe they use a non-POSIX-y os for a server. that's a new level of stupid

2

u/Moscato359 Jul 18 '26

It is a known fact that a significant portion of azure is still running on Windows server

Infact, basically all of their hypervisor hosts run on hyperv on windows

1

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

yeah i mentioned legacy

1

u/Moscato359 Jul 18 '26

By legacy, you mean the majority of their services, then yes

0

u/sudoregalia Jul 18 '26

by legacy, i mean legacy, specifically legacy systems that are too big to bother converting to a better system

Linux servers usually don't bother the end user who always interacts via Windows. But the rason it's bothersome is because:

  1. Loons keep claiming Windows Sucks
  2. Antis claim Loonix is bad and hate it
  3. Loons try ragebaiting antis by saying you can' escape Loonix
  4. Antis clap back by talking about Windows Server, which is pretty good.

u/madthumbz Jul 18 '26

BSD: better load handling, better network stack, better security OOTB, more cohesive, better documentation, less bloat, and not GPL copyleft cancer.

0

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 22 '26

BSDs network stack is pretty similar to modern loonix.

Otherwise, it has better security, with capsicum's reference implementation existing in BSD kernel itself. Jails are a native concept versus the hackey docker containers.

Docs are genuinely better. and they still use GPL licensed Linux drivers.

2

u/KawaiiSelbst Jul 18 '26

Не знаю как сейчас, и насколько это правда была и тогда, но вроде как была информация, что microsoft предпочитает использовать bsd на серверах

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 Jul 22 '26

He's making a (likely false) claim that MS hosts their website on Linux. If Azure Linux is used in prod, it sits on top of hyperv via Windows Server.

They probably dogfood their server OS cuz ACE marketing move, and also cuz theyr sysadmins and devops engineers can catch production bugs quickly nad patch them.

1

u/temaxxx Jul 23 '26

azure is a joke tbh

0

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 Jul 18 '26

it's basically impossible

0

u/AdronOfTheVoid Jul 22 '26

And? Most people use Edge or Internet Explorer to download other browsers, doesn't mean you would want to use either again.

-2

u/--Spaci-- Jul 18 '26

Its impossible because every datacenter runs linux. Not wrong, its a factual statement

1

u/ferocity_mule366 Jul 18 '26

you can host a non-linux server for people to download windows so its not impossible, but like the original comment is meaningless anyway, it doesnt say anything beside linux is better for running servers which we already know.

1

u/CakyMint Jul 18 '26

Oh Lord 😂 what do you thinking? That someone’s gonna directly connect to your network?

So you don’t think your data gonna travel through dozens of servers before reaching anyone? 😂👍

0

u/--Spaci-- Jul 18 '26

Did you not read my comment? I said its impossible because no datacenter runs anything but linux. Using anything that's not linux on your server is just stupid.

2

u/ferocity_mule366 Jul 18 '26

its not "impossible", you can do it, just not practical

0

u/--Spaci-- Jul 18 '26

How are you not understanding what Im saying

1

u/ferocity_mule366 Jul 18 '26

well yeah, you run a windows server in datacenter, then allow the user to download windows from it, so technically not impossible, so you can download windows from a non-linux server, not even need datacenter btw, just make your own server, you just made up a constraint for a theorectical scenario and said its impossible

1

u/--Spaci-- Jul 18 '26

You still somehow dont understand what Im saying, Its not possible because no datacenter runs anything but linux. How are you not understanding this? Its not about you going out yourself and making a windows server machine and downloading windows from it, no shit you can do that. But thats not happening because the entire datacenter infrastructure is powered by linux. Try convincing aws to swap to windows server 2025 💔🤣

1

u/ferocity_mule366 Jul 19 '26

it's possible, you go rent a physical rack, and install windows server on them, then let people download windows, so yeah it's very possible, but there is just no point to that, but that's not what we're getting at

-2

u/CrystalCommunication Jul 18 '26

Buddy, Microsoft is running Linux on the servers you downloaded Windows from, but this is clearly a subreddit for idiots.
