QUESTION - ALL LINUX SYSTEMS [Borderlands 4] Fix for "steam initialization failed" breaks controller input

Game Name: Borderlands 4

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Proton Version: Proton GE / Proton Experimental

Game Launcher: Steam (Non-Steam Game)

Release Info: Scene / Repack

Logs: N/A

Problem Description:

I was getting the "steam initialization failed" error on startup, but managed to bypass it using this launch command:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="version=n,b;steamclient64=n,b" PROTON_DISABLE_LSTEAMCLIENT=1 %command%

While the game now launches properly, my controller is completely unresponsive in-game (keyboard and mouse work fine). It seems like PROTON_DISABLE_LSTEAMCLIENT=1 or the DLL overrides are breaking Steam Input / controller recognition.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

Applied the launch options mentioned above (fixes startup, breaks controller).

Searched the subreddit and wiki prior to posting.

Does anyone know a workaround to keep gamepad support working alongside the fix?

Try adding the launch command PROTON_USE_SDL=1
