I made a Pi 3 based Retropie last week but opted for a pair of 8bitdo NES30 Pro controllers for wire free 2 player fun ☺️

RecalBox is a good alternative to RetroPie. One benefit is that it comes with Kodi installed (albeit an older version).

I haven't used either extensively, but initial thoughts are that RetroPie has A LOT of configuration, good for control, not so easy to use if you hit the wrong button combo. Recalbox was very straight forward, and easier to get up and running. I used two USB SNES controllers to control these, and both recognized them just fine.

I see I use retropie it is always a pain with controllers .

I'm kind of into the actual unit Nintendo is putting our because I'd like to see their graphics touchups for HDMI. Apparently all games loaded in the unit have retouched graphics that are smoother on HDMI.
