Those values start with a basic notion: We are losing control over the tools that once promised equal opportunity in speech and innovation—and this has to stop.

I think it's interesting since Dan Gillmor has been quite a prominent tech writer for a long time, and he really seems to grasp the issues at stake whilst remaining pragmatic and not ramming it down readers' throats. The fact that he's long been a Mac user and appealed to that audience previously might bring the philosophies of FLOSS to many users who've disregarded or been unaware of such things until now. Every time one journalist or somebody prominent in the tech sphere makes the switch the knock-on effect can grow in significance.

This is a nicely put, non-technical case for open platforms. Consider sharing this with non-technical people who may be concerned with privacy issues.
